Re: Samsung UE46B8000

Ok I turned CE Dimming off in the service menu as recommended by a forum memeber and If im honest with you the picture looks ****.

When you turn it off, I can see how it affects the virgin picture behind the transparent menu - the picture looks well washed out with a bad cloudy affect across the whole pic.

I turned it back on for all 3 modes.

For DTS tracks, I'm using this audio converter to convert the audio to AC3. Seems to work quite well from what I've seen.

I'll probably get a new XBMC box in time (e.g. the Acer Revo) to replace my Xbox but for the time being, I'm going to persevere with the USB harddrive. Hopefully soon, a perfect ION-based system will be released with built-in infrared and space for a DVD/Bluray drive.
Awesome; I'll give that audio converter a try & I'll keep my fingers crossed that they upgrade the Samsung firmware to support DTS.

I'm with you on the XBMC on an ION-based system. The Revo looks good, especially at the price, but the lack of optical out is a no go for me.. my amp doesn't have HDMI and there's no other way to get the DTS audio

I cannot understand why anyone would wish to do this - the whole point of the TV is to make things "black" when it can; and it does this by turning zones off completely and dimming .. now, turn this off and you end up with a £900 TV with back light bleeding visible.. but you think your being clever as its no longer dimming at times that its obvious ..

Outside of this it would also require an extra effort to re-calibrate the TV so your current settings would be worthless.

For those that are considering this - the best advice would be to replace the set with something far cheaper or merely buy an alternative TV that you would be more than happy with. Because as soon as you begin to do this sort of thing you are obviously have issues that will be with you for the lifetime of the TV.

Re: Samsung UE46B8000

I found that the B650 was the better set for me because of the above.

Backlight bleed or black level fluctuation is not something I could live with, it annoyed the hell out of me.

What's annoying is that I have three wireless routers. The o2 one which the TV won't find, an ADSL2 Linksys router which the TV also won't find and an old D-Link which isn't ADSL2 which the router finds no problem. I am now using the Linksys router as for some reason it has upped my speed from about 3.3 to 3.6. But still doesn't work for the TV.

I've tried turning the firewall off but stil doesn't work. Where would I find the IP address of the TV? I've found the DMZ section in the settings but no idea what the TV IP address is?

Yes, tried this, to no avail.

It's just odd that of the three wireless networks I've tried, it finds the D-Link one no problem on standard router settings, but can't see the Linksys or o2 routers at all.

Re: Samsung UE46B8000

Just got off the phone with Samsung and they have escalated my problem to their escalation team.

From what the guy was saying there is a possible problem with the dongle and wep/wpa security settings on various routers. Which seems a bit of a major issue as you can hardly have a router without any of these security settings!

I've been told to expect an answer in 1-3 working days, so fingers crossed.

Is there anyone here who actually has the dongle and this tv and got it to work? If so, what router do you have?

Greg, try turning off UPnP on your Router and see if that works, there
were some issues with this on previous LED panels with
slightly different symtoms but it's worth a try

CE Dimming is good for Blu-Ray in movie mode
you can get the black as good as CE Dimming on without losing too much details in dark scene, I found that the CE Dimming gives a more realistic picture when off.

just need to play with your setting.
see my setting from page 19 I think.

my virgin picture behind the transparent menu - the picture looks well Dark
as I use Natural mode for this with these setting

Mode: Natural (CE Dimming is always on)
Backlight: 7
Contrast: 93
Brightness: 43
Sharpness: 30
Color: 48
Energy saving: Low

Sorry But I dont wants lack of Detail In Dark Scenes,
got this LCD(LED) TV because of the ability to show good details in difficult dark scenes with CE dimming off.

I didnt Buy this Tv to watch Virgin Media Cable TV Services or for the Freeview.

FOR BLU-RAY OR HD-DVD
CE DIMMING OFF AND Calibration Settings UE##B8000 ROCK.

see this for the UE##B6000

To achieve the desired black levels that Samsung are aiming for with the LED system, they are using an automatic dimming system (not local dimming- that is only available with an LED backlight). The effect of this dimming, which cannot be turned off in the main menus or service menu areas, is to adjust the screen luminance in such a way that it makes greyscale set up very difficult. I will cover the other issues with the dimming later.

I could see the LEDs dimming to try and obtain the deep black background, as I used some window patterns, and the grey of these boxes was not at the desired luminance level. To say that this was frustrating would be an understatement and I longed for an option to switch this dimming off.

I can fully appreciate what your saying - but likewise I also feel that you are missing the point about the beauty of the set and what it achieves for the most part; and achieves well. If you have issues of loss of detail in dark scenes then this is entirely the fault of your generic settings and not something the set is deliberately hiding away from you. It's working with you, not against you. I am in no way losing 'shadow detail' to the point you are suggesting - and if there is any to be lost, it is supposed to be lost; and therefore do not feel any urgency to go into the service menu and fiddle with options that ultimately break more than they resolve.

Re: Samsung UE46B8000

Oh man. I got my TV at Costco for £1610 much cheaper thn the delayed order from Novatech for £1750.00. Its awsome with the PS3. The pic quality is brilliant through HDMI, Coaxal and streaming.

However, having two issues
1) Picture through SKY+ via scart is distorted with too many pixals. Any suggetsions for improving or why? Could it be because of the samsung mini scart adapter?

2) Cannot get wifi through my belkin USB dongle as not even powering up. Does this have to be Samsung's own dongle. Some say it can be any dongle and some say it has to be Samsung's own as the TV can only has Samsung drivers for their dongle.
A USB memory stick powers up and I can play all from it but when I plugin the Belkin wifi dongle it does not power up or get recognised via network settings.

3) After setting TV settings for contrast picture size etc. settings disappear after closing and restarting TV.

Otherwise this is an awsome TV so far...

Any help for above appreciated.
thx

Oh did I forget to mention the 5yr warranty this TV comes with via Costco....What a bargain. Saved £140 to buy the special mount. Anyone know where to get another bargain for the mount?

It does have to be Samsung's own dongle. Although if you have read my last few posts on this thread, you will see I can't get it to work properly either, although it is detected and powered up by the TV.

Strange one as it should save the settings. Are you setting this on the HDMI connection?

Re: Samsung UE46B8000

I'll hopefully get mine tonight, in the mean time I'm working out what extra leads and things to buy from CPC - like a nice long optical lead, HDMI cables, and a really flat CAT6 network cable that will run under doors nicely All way cheaper than buying from somewhere like Comet.

I've also bought a 320Gb freecom USB pocket drive for £50, but one thing I think I remember reading was that the USB socket on the Samsung doesn't provide enough power.. is this true? And if so, have people pulled extra power from the other USB socket without frying the drive.. or have you bought an external power adapter; I'm just looking at the CPC website to try to work out what would power the Freecom drive if I need it powered externally.

Re: Samsung UE46B8000

Well, bought my 46" 8000 on Saturday morning from Costco too. First went to the Watford store where they have sold about 30 in 7 days and had 3 in stock. Unfortunately they were still in the racks, high up and forklift trucks weren't allowed to get them until the store was closedat about 18:00. So went to the MK branch and collected one from there. On Saturday they had 7 in stock and both branches weren't sure how soon a re-stock was going to be done once they were sold.

TV still in box as off on hols and having some bulding work done, so may be a few weeks before it is on the wall with Sky HD etc. Impatient already.

It really is outstanding with the PS3 and 360.. words almost fail.

As a previous poster said - this should not be the case as it really does a good job of allowing you to store settings 'per connection x 4' [connection x Movie, Natural, Standard, Dynamic] .. So if you set "Movie" and "Game" on PS3 those same settings will not be carried over for your Sky / Virgin connection (if using separate HDMI ports) .. you will need to set those according too; and what works well with the PS3 will not work quite the same with Sky, etc. So you really will need to do a lot of fiddling around to get things 'just right' ..

Why Cat 6? I thought you need Cat 5 to network? I'm connected wirelessly from PC to PS3 and then as I don't have Samsung dongle I want to connect PS3 to TV lan using Cat 5 network cable. I tried this and failed to get the network into the TV. Any suggestions please. Thx

Strange one as it should save the settings. Are you setting this on the HDMI connection?

I've also bought a 320Gb freecom USB pocket drive for £50, but one thing I think I remember reading was that the USB socket on the Samsung doesn't provide enough power.. is this true? And if so, have people pulled extra power from the other USB socket without frying the drive.. or have you bought an external power adapter; I'm just looking at the CPC website to try to work out what would power the Freecom drive if I need it powered externally.

Indeed it is - enjoy.

Why does it have to be samsung's own dongle? What's different as i have a belkin n1 usb dongle and all it works on a another pc with some power?

well the ps3 has hdmi connection. But sky+ has scart only and there are also no component connections on the back of the sky+ box as someone else recommended. If i change the settings there is no save function. When i put on standby and restart the settings go back to original.

The only reason I chose the CAT6 was that's what CPC had in the really flat variety. I'd have bought CAT5 if they had it.

So you tried hooking up to some CAT5 and the TV didn't recognise it? Do you have the cable going into a DHCP-enabled router, or have manually set the IP via the Network Setup page?

Anyone used the DVE cd with their panel?

I wont be able to set it up for another couple of days though
Ive downloaded the DVE HD Basics Bluray but im unable to stream or burn (lack of bray burner).

Ive also downloaded the DVD version, which Im told is not really different other than the easier navigation in the main menu.

Not tried it yet but can you guys report back with the best settings when you've had a chance to complete this.

Re: Samsung UE46B8000

Hi. When I played my first Blu ray disk I've noticed that the black stripes on top and bottom of the screen where not realy black depending on what was shown in the picture. Light was coming from the edges of the screen and specialy from the corners. I used the movie mode with more or less the settings of previous posters.
Do you have similar issues or something to suggest?

Perhaps it just doesn't save the settings on scart? Might be time to upgrade to SkyHD then?

Have you tried toggling between the "HDMI Black Level" that has "OFF" and "Low" as its two options? (set it to "Low") - But essentially you should be seeing black for your borders. Of course, you can also stretch vertically the picture to erase the bars but I am sure you are not after this form of soft fix. But still, you should have no issues of anything other than black from my experience.

Regarding light coming from edges.. presuming that various settings are off and that the set is not using its main set of features; you might notice clouding or light-bleeding which often comes from the corners because of the way light is distributed. It's thin.. so light seems to emit from corners spreading out.. but once the rest of the LED technology kicks in this should be covered over unlike with less featured sets.

Re: Samsung UE46B8000

I'm planning on picking up a UE46B8000 from Costco Reading/UK this Friday

By the way, there's an online demo of the widgets here:
Samsung LED TV - A whole new species of television

Does anyone know when Samsung are planning on releasing the YouTube widget for the UK?

I understand from what I've read that the YouTube widget that it's not yet available in the UK yet, though I'm sure I read something somewhere saying that some regions around the world already have it

Anyway, look at me fussing about widgets and what not...

I can't wait to see the HD PQ in my front room
