Is the 40V5500 a replacement for the 40V4000 or 40W4000?

Re: Sony KDL-V5500 SERIES

Thanks for the info kourosh and Chris. I'm confused about the difference between Applicast and Viera Cast technologies, announced by Sony and Panasonic respectively for most of their 2009 ranges - including V5500. Is it essentially the same (or similar) technology? I'm excited by the continuing move towards convergence of computer/TV/internet, and want to make the best choice when I buy my new TV in a few weeks. My first concern is to get a great HD image though (Freesat, French TNTHD and Bluray)

Can anybody help with a basic evaluation of what they understand about the two *cast technologies, the possibilities and the limitations ?

Re: Sony KDL-V5500 SERIES

I'm torn as to which TV to buy at the moment, either the 40W4500, 40V5500 or 40W5500.

Is the only difference between the V5500 and W5500 the 100hz? If so then I'll go with the V, watched a demonstration supposedly to show me the benefits of 100hz, but I couldn't tell the difference. And certainly not £100 of difference...

Any help as to which one of the three to get would be appreciated!

Thanks

Re: Sony KDL-V5500 SERIES

the difference between V5500 and W5500 is the 100Hz yes and the lower contrast for the V,other than that the same.In any case I wouldnt get the old one now that they are in release

Re: Sony KDL-V5500 SERIES

Amazon now have the 37V5500 available to preorder for release on March 9th for £699. Might be worth preordering now and cancel if you find it cheaper nearer the release date. Just noticed they have also got the 32inch version for £599.

Re: Sony KDL-V5500 SERIES

I'm inclined to buy a 37V5500 (the size is right for my room, and it has the right mix of features for my needs and my budget (Applicast, USB, 4HDMI etc). I've never yet been impressed by 100Hz models. My remaining concern is about the panel. It seems that all the other panels in the V5500 range are S-PVA made by the joint Sony/Samsung venture. The 37" is apparently a A-MVA from the Taiwanese producer AUO which seems to have a (slightly) poorer reputation - the contrast figures quoted are a little lower than for the others. I was so impressed by the 32W4000 that I'd hate to be disappointed by the 37V5500.

I guess I need to wait and see an example in the shops, or a review in one of the magazines. Chrisgeo has expressed the view that the 37" will be OK. Are there any other views out there from other insiders? Anybody seen any user reviews?

I don't think anyone knows as I've asked twice now. From what I can gather online mp3, jpg and mpeg1 but obviously that's not the good stuff people are that interested in. The manuals aren't online yet, details on applicast are very thin.

Re: Sony KDL-V5500 SERIES

Just been in an seem the 32v5500 at the Sony Centre in Milton Keynes.
Looks really nice and nice crisp picture. Definitely better than the w4000.

Interestingly they are already on sale andI could have bought and walked away with one today! I though they had not gone on sale yet.

Price is £799 which is £200 more expensive than the some online, however it does come with a 5 year warranty.

I cant give you an expert opinion, however the Bravia 3 is meant to be better and with a contrast of 60,000:1 it should be much better. Meant to be overall better than the excellent 32w4000.

However it is not 100Hz. This is saved for the new w5500 series.

Thanks for the reply. Numbers are good as they are indicative of a measure, but in the case of CR, i will not trust any numbers. I wanted to check if someone has read anything good (in cd/m2) about the black level on the V series?

I think you may need to wait a few weeks for some reviews then. I too am homing that some of the early adopters will post their views from having got one.

Re: Sony KDL-V5500 SERIES

There are two user reviews of the 32V5500, in French, here, with subjective and generally positive opinions. No figures, but one reviewer talks of stunning contrast and intense blacks in Blueray, though the other says that the default settings did not give great results in SD. Both were however bowled over by the rendering of Call of Duty 4.
