LCD - any motion blur free?

Hi all, on the look out for a new TV but erring toward a plasma because of all the bad press about LCD suffering from motion blur during sport and fast action - Its the only thing stopping me from getting an LCD to be honest as now the picture quality is on a par with plasmas and they are more energy efficient

Re: LCD - any motion blur free?

To be honest, I haven't seen a single LCD TV which is absolutely Motion Blur free. Panasonic's 7th and 8-series LCDs are very good at this, but still the Motion Resolution seems to be quite low. And their plasmas perform above 800 lines of Motion Resolution, which is pretty damn good result, so I really hope that NeoPDPs will bring us a new level here with full time 1080 TV lines.

Re: LCD - any motion blur free?

Sorry, I should provide a little info shouldnt I

Looking for a 40 to 42" screen
Main seating position is directly opposite approx 14 feet away. we do have a sofa at 90' to the screen but thats for guests so not that important
Budget is only £600 max and I would like to get a warranty with that but if its not needed more money for TV
I Have no HD sources at present so mainly watch all TV through the ordinary Sky SD box.
I also only have DVD - no Blueray - no point till I get a TV that can manage HD
Full HD not that important if Im right in thinking that at 14 to 15 feet I wont notice a difference
Do a fair bit of gaming (on wii) - thinking about getting a PS3 eventually (for B/ray and gaming)
Watch a fair bit of sport (mainly football) but mostly watch fast paced films (I watch a lot on DVD)

The thing is most places I've been to have BBC HD on which looks good on all sets but it would wouldnt it.

My friend has been singing the praises of the LG scarlets and I must admit thier plasmas (especially 42PG6000) look mighty fine indeed but the burn and Image rentention bothers me a little.

Hope this helps a little

Re: LCD - any motion blur free?

Well, now that you've finished your squabbling - the answer is to go and look at some for myself, great help you guys.

Doesn't anybody have any recommendations for my requirements as listed in the price range I have quoted.

Re: LCD - any motion blur free?

The Sony Z4500 with Motionflow 200Hz ought to be virtually free from motion blur.

HDTV Test have this to say in their review:

Setting [Motionflow] to “Standard” was enough to boost motion resolution to 1080, the highest we’ve ever recorded on an LCD television.

Re: LCD - any motion blur free?

Hi

I get the impression you are definitely 'erring' towards a plasma screen and a small nudge will tip you over! Your second post does suggest a plasma will better meet your needs. Really it is up to you.

The fun bit is the research - reading the reviews in magazines and on the websites. Narrowing down the choice and finally purchasing the TV within your budget and ensuring it gets the approval of other members of your household is quite a challenge but most enjoyable.

I'm carefully staying very clear of pros and cons of plasma/LCD for reasons you are now fully aware of. The only thing I will touch on is image retention, apparently LCD screens can also suffer from this (so I've read, but I have my doubts).

Regards
Alan

would that be the the same Z4500 that costs over £1200, double my £600 budget

As I said I am erring toward plasma because of the motion blurr reported in LCDs but this was the only thing that was stopping me from getting an LCD and I was asking for suggestions based on my preferences of budget, veiwing habits and broadcast source if there are any that dont suffer from it.

I recommended the z4500 (in one of the posts that was deleted) to meet your motion blur requirements, unfortunatley I did not see your budget figure

Why dont you check out the Panasonic 37PX80B plasma. It smaller than the 40" you are after but should be in your budget if motion blur is an issue.

For 40" the Sony 40v4000 LCD gets good right ups. Empire Direct have it for £599.99 and you can have a 3 year warranty for an extra £30 but I dont think you will get rid of motion blur altogether with LCD for your budget.

Hope that helps

thanks for your reply, so for £600 I will have to settle for a plasma, all LCDs that cost under £600 at the min have motion blur

As has been mentioned a few times, you need to go and view the TV's to see if you even notice 'motion blur'.
I've not seen any reviews on plasma panels in your price range but, they may still suffer from motion blur (a loss of resolution with moving objects/ images).
It would seem that the majority of Panasonic 42" plasma panels seem to handle motion quite well. And the entry level set is only just over your current budget. They don't necessarily do other aspects of PQ so well though, which should be taken into account.

If it were me, I'd concentrate on what I see as more important facets of PQ, like black level, colour reproduction and general accuracy of image the TV is producing. A TV could handle motion brilliantly but, if all the blacks look grey and the colour reproduction is poor, the overall experience would be ruined.

Hope you dont think, I have it in for you But image retention does happen with LCD's I know from first hand experience as my Samsung 27" model suffered terribly. Now it was used for TV and PC and a lot of gaming and it was the gaming that caused it for me.

It first occured when the TV was 18 months old and GH2 caused the words ROCK to remain on the screen for about 3 hrs after the game was switched off and since the first occurance it started to happen with lots of games with HUD's and the like.

I'm not pro-con LCD/Plasma in the slightest but I go with the recommendation for the Sony 40" KDL 40V4000. Got one myself last week and IMO its a wonderful piece of kit, and I cant notice the slightest bit of now I've turned off the advanced picture settings options that I can never remember.

Re: LCD - any motion blur free?

LCDs also suffer from IR and 'burn-ins'. But it's not as common.

Anyway, OP, as I've said before, you are asking a bit much for the budget atm.

There are only two options: The Sony 40V4000 and TH-42PX80B.

On the other hand, you could wait for the newer 2009 models.

PS: Take a high-motion progressive source with you to a store and test it. The dead or alive 4 HD 60p trailer is a good choice. But I think you may need to convert that to AVC/H.264, so that it can be played on standard BD players. Also, make sure to learn the functions of each settings beforehand.

With that budget and those viewing habits/sources the Panasonic Plasma
PX80 will be very hard to beat for all round picture quality, plus they handle motion very well, better than most LCD's in that price bracket.

Link to review
Panasonic TH42PX80 Review: 42” Viera 24p 100Hz Plasma

The 42 inch has been available for under £600 recently.

The only thing I will ask is what is your viewing environment like, is it a very bright sunny room, with large windows?

Re: LCD - any motion blur free?

The room is about 16' long, door and partition wall at one end (where TV will go) and large full width window at the other which is south facing and about 10 to 12" wide.
Front room window is north facing so even though it is almost the full room width it is never very bright.

Re: LCD - any motion blur free?

Deffo agree that for football pic i would go for a panasonic plasma, if you can i would try and get into a shop when you know there is a football match on live & get them to play it for you on both lcd and plasma, i know that maybe a bit awkward for them & maybe for you but Currys did it for me , only, thing was there was no football on when i did it,( my mistake ).....anyway good luck.

From what i have seen for football in SD plasma is better than Lcd.

I hope my words dont get twisted by anyone this post was puerly meant to help Janz & not offend anyone.
