Sylvania 42" 1080p TV, max PC input 1024x768.. why is this?

I've got a 8301nr HP Laptop. It has a VGA output, which outputting to my 22" monitor I can get resolutions of up to 1050, and probably higher if I tried. When I plug in the VGA to my 42" Sylvania 1080p tv, the max resolution I can run is 1024x768 without my TV saying "unsupported format"

Does anyone have any ideas why this is? Shouldnt I be able to output to a much higher resolution?

Re: Sylvania 42" 1080p TV, max PC input 1024x768.. why is this?

Hi, on my fiance's laptop (it has Nvidia graphics) I have to go to the display options, and set the display to only output to the TV. When I've done that I can select higher resolutions. If I leave it on the default output-to-both setting (ie laptop and TV displaying simultaneously) it limits me to 1024x768 or something similar. This is with HDMI output, but it could be the same problem over VGA?

Hope that helps!
Pete.

Re: Sylvania 42" 1080p TV, max PC input 1024x768.. why is this?

Well my laptop screen is actually broken. This is why I hook my PC up to an external monitor in the first place. Normally its on a 22" widescreen at the 1080 x 1050 or whatever, so I KNOW high resolutions are possible. Then when I switch cables to my TV, any resolution over 1024 makes the screen say unsupported format.

Even if I try to force a mode, its the TV that wont display it. Its a 1080p TV, I figured it wouldnt matter if it was via VGA since I could probably do 1080 on a regular monitor

Hi,

All I can think is that it can't handle the refresh rate that your card is outputting at the higher resolutions. Have you tried selecting different refresh rates at the higher resolutions?

What is the model number for your TV? There is a support email contact on the Sylvania USA website you could try emailing (I cant find a UK website).

Cheers,
Pete.

Thanks for the link. I sent them a inquiry. I've not tried a different refresh rate, would I want to try lowering it when going to a higher resolution?

Model of my TV is LC420SS8

I'd try all the options it gives, probably 60Hz if you've not already tried that. Increasing or decreasing it won't hurt the TV, it just won't be able to display it.

If that doesn't work, then with some drivers you can override the defaults and set the refresh rate manually, or download software that allows you to override them (one used to be called 'Powerstrip' but I've not had the need to use it for a long time so not sure if it is still around, or if it is still the most widely used tool).

Pete.
