re: Samsung LE-A78x SERIES LED *Part 2*

Is the sound as bad as laptop speakers or monitors with built in speakers?

I have an old 19" lcd monitor with built in speakers and the sound is terrible, low and tinny.
They sound like headphones that are on the desk but not over your ears if you know what I mean.

Grayscale looks very good now, but i see that you calibrated according to the Rec601 standard, which is for SD? When i get my mouse over the points of the CIE chart, Rec601 will be displayed, but it has to be Rec. 709?

No it is not that bad, it is hard to put into words, it s like the sound is coming from inside the tv rather then from the picture, if you get my meaning.

I'm a "Plasma" fan - had my Panasonic for 2 years now and been very impressed

I've always forgotten about the idea of LCDs as the ones I've seen have looked terrible - but as I was walking around a store today I stumbled across one of the 7 series of Samsung, and was REALLY surprised

black levels seemed superb - better than the Panasonic PZ81 I was comparing to - and motion seemed spot on too.

are they really this good ??? !

No I calibrated to the Rec 709 (HD) standard. I'm guessing the preferences in your installation are still set to show SD which is the default. If you go to Advanced > Preferences... and then switch to the References tab, you'll see the list of colour space standards at the top as a dropdown list. This will probably be set to SDTV - REC 601. If you change this to HDTV - REC 709, the CIE charts should now show the REC 709 points.

re: Samsung LE-A78x SERIES LED *Part 2*

I've looked through the threads for an answer to this question but can never find an answer.

What is the Up/Down viewing angle like on this tv? We are planning to have it just above eye level, (above our fireplace) so what would the effect be?

Thanks :D

My miss's just asked me why i was bobbing up and down like a duck, well the answer to your questions is that it had no effect on the picture to me with the tv 1mtr off the ground with my face on the ground.

With the height just above eye level it would be ok, but would you not also angle the tv down slightly so you are face on?

Like mparter said, it is a personal preference. However, the only setting that does not influence the input signal is 0.

I saw the benefits in this technology from day one. I always found LCDs archiles heel to be its backlight. Clouding, washed out colours etc. were the proof of this. But these LED LCDs have solved those problems are now leaps and bounds ahead of plasmas and if I were purchasing a set today it would be one of these Samsung LEDs.

re: Samsung LE-A78x SERIES LED *Part 2*

Hi, I wonder if you owners of the 786 would mind answering a few questions I have please to help me decide on this set?

1. Has the recent firmware update fixed the 'combing' de-interlacing artifacts noted in the HDTVtest review?

2. Does the set reproduce 24p material properly without issues (I've seen mention of frame drops/skips and judder in threads about other Samsung models).

3. In terms of halo-ing is it an issue? I'll be seated head-on, so I'm interested to know at what point it becomes noticable (e.g. would a white mouse cursor display halos?).

4. In the 'part 1' thread, someone noted flickering or shimmering with PC games (COD4 was mentioned) - has anyone experienced this? (It may possibly have been the guys PC setup).

5. The HDTVtest notes a Y/C delay problem - has this been fixed in the firmware update?

Thanks in advance
Phil

1. Not seen any of these artifacts and I have new set with up to date f/w
2. It does do 24p very well, just stay away from medium or high 100hz
3.It wont be an issue I suggest sitting about 2 mtrs from the set though
4. I have not seen this but it lends itself to the g/card not being setup to the correct refresh that is detailed in the manual

Hope it helps

Apparently this work-around is only useful for those using an external amp and speakers.

There may be different types of noise / whining / whistling with different causes, I don't know that much, I only know this solution works for me. Apparently the whining is caused by some interference on the speaker lines. Plugging in a headphone jack switches the speaker circuitry off by hardware (as opposed to the menu entry "Speakers Off" which only mutes them via software)

I'm still letting Samsung service come in for a repair giving a definitive solution. Anyhow, this work-around helps me out till that moment.
Qubyb, you are spot on, that is the fault I'm on about and the earphones plugged into the side get rid of the noise. But my problem is i don't have an AV amp, besides TV is going back to shop on Tuesday, it is still a fault.

Does anybody else have this fault or is it just one or two TVs, i hope so as i want to get another one of these as the pic is super.

I dont seem to have this noise, but a few people have said they have it, and on the 9 series forum as well. So it may be a dodgy component in there somewhere.

I don't currently have a bluray player or any HD off air content.
Is there anyway I can down load a short demo clip on my pc in 1080p, stick it on a memory stick and play it on my new 786? I am dying to see it in true HD mode.

Thanks

Whats likely too happen to the price of Samsung tv's in the new year? I've read that the cost of Sony tv's will be rising due to the crappy value of the pound vs the yen. Will this be true of Samsung tv's?, as im looking to buy this set next year.

i bought mine a few weeks ago from John Lewis just before the VAT decrease. When that happend the price of the TV actually went up! Im guessing the falling £ can only make prices for UK buyers go up in the long term.

re: Samsung LE-A78x SERIES LED *Part 2*

Thanks to the great discussion on this TV, I plunked down 1410 euros here in Holland and bought a LE40A786 - amazing picture, clear sound (not terribly stereo, but not rattly as some have had) and wonderful flexibility with my old video hardware.

Which brings me to my newbie question: I saw the latest adjustments by mparter - is this only for HDMI inputs or would SD video benefit? I have an 5-year old Pioneer DVD/theatre system over s-video and get my signal from UPC digital cable via scart connectors...nothing too hi-tech here, and it's going to stay that way for the foreseeable future.

I guess I can adjust everything and find out (although I'm not sure about going into service menus, as it's brand-new and I'm a bit apprehensive). Will my SD material benefit from any of this?

Again, thanks for the fabulous thread!

Jim

re: Samsung LE-A78x SERIES LED *Part 2*

I just brought home [Hungary] my new LE40A786 from Germany as the prices are quite nice there (got it for 1120 euro). I followed the posts, but will have to again review them, or someone could give me a short answer.

I would use it mainly to view content from an htpc, connected with a DVI-HDMI cable. As far as I understood if port 2 is being used (naming not set to PC) the Smart Led option should still be available, or not?

If I use another HDMI, I get all the options, but cannot set 1080p, only the interlaced modes work. If I set 1080p I get Invalid mode.

Could you tell me the best way to connect a htpc with having the LED functionality available?

I would use it mainly to view content from an htpc, connected with a DVI-HDMI cable. As far as I understood if port 2 is being used (naming not set to PC) the Smart Led option should still be available, or not?

If I use another HDMI, I get all the options, but cannot set 1080p, only the interlaced modes work. If I set 1080p I get Invalid mode.

I've got my XBox 360 and PS3 connected into HDMI 2 (labelled Game) via a Samsung AV receiver and both of them have the Smart LED option enabled.

Jim
These settings have been calibrated against HD material which has a wider colour gamut than SD. Without a measuring device, my best advice is to try them and see if you like them. Use them as a baseline and tweak from there. The last settings I posted were based upon an HDMI Black Level setting of Normal. I'm just about to post my calibrated results for an HDMI Black Level of Low....

I don`t get the Smart LED option on HDMI 2, I suppose the tv identifies the other party and your Samsung AV receiver `cheats` on this. I can set on HDMI 4 1080i 60Hz, 1080p/24, but 1080p 50Hz gives "Mode Not Supported". Maybe something is wrong on my Ati GPU, I can check an NVidia tomorrow.

I`ll compare against connecting again with the analog VGA cable, looking at a browser looked finer there as 1080i.

The proposed settings I`ll try, just wanted to find first the right connection port, output signal setting for the PC...

re: Samsung LE-A78x SERIES LED *Part 2*

For the un-initated, when should we be using backlight "low" and backlight "normal"

Also, am I right in thinking that the "Movie, Standard or Dynamic" settings are irrelevant. i.e. if I set all the settings for "movie" to a certain calibration and all the settings for "standard" to the same calibration, the output is identical. The 3 settings merely give 3 possible calibration options....correct ?

Is there anyway I can down load a short demo clip on my pc in 1080p, stick it on a memory stick and play it on my new 786? I am dying to see it in true HD mode.

Thanks

Anybody?

I did download a demo file off the internet, copied it on to a USB stick but the TV only seems to display stills and Audio files from a USB stick.
Am I right that I won't be able to do this?
