Lurch;
I think you'll find that 1080i is the best that Sky HD will output.

You are right mate, you have 1080i or 720p, and 720p looks absolutely rubbish so just leave it on auto or set it to 1080i

Re: Samsung LE-A78x SERIES LED *Part 2*

I posted elsewhere but this 786 thread seems best. My new 786 TV connects well via scart, but I am completely unable to access HDMI channels in the source selection. They all appear faintly (and cannot be accessed), in spite of trying two different cables and every port. I get Ext 1, ext 2 and DTV. That's it. Has anyone else had this problem? Without viable HDMI why bother? Help!

Just a thought,Ron,

You havnt got the set in "Store" mode have you.I think that this would restrict your input capabilities.

Have a look on page 11 of your manual, item 3 which will allow you to reset it.

Good Luck,

Anyone still looking for the 46" 786, have a look on 1stAudiovisual, they are showing as "limited stock". They may well have them and I cant fault their customer service which was 1st class

Re: Samsung LE-A78x SERIES LED *Part 2*

There is a new firmware for the A786/A789:

T-RB2PEUMD-1002.0

I've updated my TV, but couldn't find any changes. I didn't have problems before, so it doesn't matter for me.

Re: Samsung LE-A78x SERIES LED *Part 2*

Hello some updates!
owner of 46" 796 nordic model, LD-enabled from sw.

posted my experiences in PT1 of this thread when I got mine

Do you want to get rid of the video look 100hz, yes there is some slight even in low setting,

Go to SW-menu --> Advanced --> FRCM

I took mine low setting to 15, which makes it basicaly almost impossible to discern it over from 100hz off, (except you get the full benefits of blur removal and full motion resolution, since this setting does not affect blur removal)
BTW this setting is standard in new Samsung series B, where you can adjust judder and blur removal in custom menu, Would be nice if Samsung would enable these settings also available from standard menu of 78/9 series
I would encourage experienced users to modify this setting from Sw since it gives the benefit of very authentic film look!

BTW thx to PUREFFM for the original post

"Original post by PUREFFM
Another interesting setting concerns the 100Hz function:

Video Judder
This setting impacts the agressiveness of the 100Hz function and can be fixed for all 3 100Hz levels:

Those are the standard values:
Video_Judder_Low: 10
Video_Judder_Med: 5
Video_Judder_High: 0 "

How do you know that you get full motion resolution?

Re: Samsung LE-A78x SERIES LED *Part 2*

Hi
I just got my Le-46a786, and have been spending a couple of days tweaking it. I read here about how you can enable Led smart motion background scanning to get full 1080 lines of motion resolution.

Could anybody please give me a "dummies" guide on how to open the service menu and enable this feature, and then exit the service menu?

Another thing, this may sound stupid, but does this feature have any impact on the longevity on the display. My understanding is that this enables the led lights to flicker on and off very fast, I wouldnt want my leds to "burn out" after a year or so

Re: Samsung LE-A78x SERIES LED *Part 2*

I've had the LE-40A789 (German model) for a few weeks now, and I'm happy about it. It's my first LCD so I don't really have any references.

One thing that annoys me about the set is that it keeps "forgetting" the colour settings. I must have set the values 10 times now, for the HDMI input aswell as the SCART (Ext. 1) input. I'm not really sure when the settings are reset, but after turning on and off the TV a few times and switching input sources I'm back to the defaults.

How do I properly save the setting so they're used every time?

[edit]
A little more information on the subject: standard settings (Menu -> Picture -> Backlight / Contrast / ...) seem to stick for the SCART/Ext. 1 input, but the Colour Space and White Balance always reset.
[/edit]

Re: Samsung LE-A78x SERIES LED *Part 2*

mparter, thank you for your calibration values. They give the most accurate picture I have seen until now. I have tried many different values provided by many others, but yours beat them all
Have you tried them with the latest firmware?

Hopefully I will soon have access to a probe so I can calibrate myself and I would not be surprised if your values are close to perfect

Hello

Do you think the recent firmware update has fixed the combing issue on 50hz sources? The issue is described in the following review:

Samsung LE40A786 Review

It's the main thing putting me off buying the TV, and they wont be around for much longer

Re: Samsung LE-A78x SERIES LED *Part 2*

I read this review as part of my research before buying.

I use mine for SD Freeview,SD DVD, HD DVD, Blu-ray and Sky SD & HD
I am not a Gamer so cant comment.

I have yet to see any Combing effect on an input from any source.Perhaps I have been Lucky.

For its size I find all SD inputs result in a performance that is on the good side of acceptable.Obviously,Freeview is the weakest performer, but not to the extent that its issues are distracting.

This technology and,I believe, this particular model excels with an HD source. The performance is at worse,on a par with Panasonic Plasma and often exceeds them.
The down sides are, very slight blooming around light features on a dark background, and, again minor,Black Crush, where some detail is lost in the overall darkness of a dark picture. The result is that the dark area's look flat.
This can be reduced by turning up the brightness one or two points.

I even like the sound, which others, perhaps non owners, insist on criticising.

If you can,Buy One.

Good Luck,

KH

Re: Samsung LE-A78x SERIES LED *Part 2*

also is there a way of setting the 100hz, for freeview, to low and for hdmi 1 to off? or is there a way of doing this by setting one of the hdmi's to PC so it ignores the 100hz setting? im feeding it from a PC anyway, for watching 1080p content.

p.s. has anyone come up with a better set of settings other than mpartner's on the last page of the first part of this thread? did he obtain those settings using a calibration device?

Many thanks qubyb, those settings (the average excl the highest and lowest) seems very very well balanced. Reccomended.

But i've just flashed the new FW 1002.0 : it seems to me that something has been optimized in the color settings. Using the setting "Movie" (or Film, depending on country) and the Smart LEd on, the basic settings seems very well balanced, or at the least this is my feeling. In particular it seems to me that a correction has been applied to the white balance (Bgain), the one everybody adopted (you can identify the unbalance even naked eyes)

Have yet to try to re-apply the qubyb "averaged" settings after the fw upgrade.
It would be interesting if someone with tools could double check if the colour settings has been changed with the FW 1002.0: in this case all the previous settings suggestions will not hold anymore.......

If anybody has noticed any other improuvement with the new firmware please tell us.

Hi, I got the same factory values. Does it mean that we do not need any firmware upgrade? How can it be if the firmware 1002 is just come out and if this is the case? can anyove that is upgraded recently confirm, please?
thank You ,Alex

Hi, KH. I'll verify tonight, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't. The strange thing is that it does remember most of its settings, but the very detailed settings (White balance, Detailed colour settings) are always reverted to default after turning the set off and on.

I'll try resetting the TV to factory defaults and start all over from scratch.

Re: Samsung LE-A78x SERIES LED *Part 2*

Hi,
on a completely different subject, has anyone managed to display any video on the 786. When I plug in a USB stick with some video on it, I only get the option of photos or music, yet I'm sure the reviews say that the TV will do video as well..
Its referenced in the Homecinemachoice review for example :

Re: Samsung LE-A78x SERIES LED *Part 2*

Hi,

I am currently having some sound syncronisation issues through my LE40A786, which i think is since i updated the firmware.

I have made a thread here,http://www.avforums.com/forums/lcd-t...-le40a786.html .

But though i would aks in here if anyone else is having any other syncronisation problems. Its really winding me up, and i am thinking of returning the TV.

Welcome Aboard!

I have a 40" version and only have MP3 and JPEG through WISELINK - as confirmed by the manual too. It's just possible the 46" model has video support, but I thought this was introduced in the 2009 model range only.

Update - not supported on 46" model either http://www.avforums.com/forums/lcd-t...ml#post8034972
