Re: LE-A656 settings thread *Part 2*

Hi there, bought this tv today, has ever had/heard of the ps3 not displaying on the tv? The ps3 was already outputting via the HDMI cos I had an HDTV previously & worked perfectly, so there should be no problem with the ps3, I've tried all the HDMI inputs but they are all shaded out, I cant get it to show up I've no idea whats going on?

Re: LE-A656 settings thread *Part 2*

Hi

For HDMI input the user setting for picture option size should be on 'Just Scan'.

Recommend you have a look at the first page of this thread for user settings, both SD and HD.

Re: LE-A656 settings thread *Part 2*

Hello,

Couple of questions before i take delivery of my set this week.
Been looking at the difference in settings between SD and HD. I am assuming htere is a way to automatically change the settings to either SD or HD depending on what input you have ?? How does it work when you change from SD to HD coz you obvioulsy dont have to change them every time you switch?

Also, what is the best firmware to be on? Old question i know, but i will be playing the stuff in my sig through it and dont want to fall fowl of the lag issue.

Ta for that.

Hi

The user settings are available for each input, so once set up no need to change when movings from one input to another or from SD to HD.

A new TV will have the latest firmware. IMO wait until the next firmware update is released before looking at firmware.

What if you have Sky HD box and you go from HD channels to SD channels?

If you have HD box would you just use HD settings for all channels.

There is only one set of picture settings for each input. As a result, unless you want to change them everytime you switch from an SD to HD channel, your stuck with one set.

If you invest some time, you can get a very good compromise, for teh settings, for both SD and HD broadcasts.
I did that with mine and now even ITV looks good.

Hi Kevin

Ah-ha - I see what you mean. I don't have the Sky HD box, but does it have HDMI and SCART ports?

If it does then you could set it up with the TV over SCART for SD and over HDMI for HD. You will have two lots of settings then!

Re: LE-A656 settings thread *Part 2*

Hi Guys,

I'm from Lithuania and have LE 46A656 tv, I bought Mpeg4 card which allowing to see brotcastind digital television. Unfortunately in moving picture a lot of blur and delay especialy in moving scenes (football or basketball). I'm using the lates frimware T-AMBPEUMD-1020.1 which unfortunately not helped. I think my tv not get HD signal from DTV or satilite(simple didital tuner).
Should I change something additional? Also don't understand how to change W/B settings in SM?
Thank you in advance.

That's a good point actually although, not necessary as the PAL and REC.709 (HD) colour spaces are very similar.
With that in mind, an input calibrated for HD will still be very accurate with SD (PAL) material, from the same source. That's the important part, the process of calibration is to calibrate the source to the panel.
Using a single HDMI connection, will keep the feed in the digital domain too. If you use a scart cable, the feed will go from digital to analogue, out of the HD box and back to digital when it gets to the TV, before it's displayed. Two unecessary processing steps that are likely to add artefacts.

That's OK as there's no point in changing the SM settings unless you need to, to get an accurate picture.
You won't know if the SM settings need changing without measuring equipment.

Re: LE-A656 settings thread *Part 2*

Hi Paul

So it might work then? My comment was purely conjecture.

I'm sure you're right about the calibration and processing steps. Digital is far better than analogue, but don't quote me!

(Welcome back - where have you been?)

Hi Alan,

I think it should work yes. As you stated, the scart input will have a different and isolated set of adjustments for itself and I don't think there would be any issues with the Sky box doing it...

Oh, and I didn't state that digital was better than analogue. Merely that 'nasties' could creep into the picture, from the digital to analogue and back processing that would be carried out with the scart connectivity.

Thanks for the welcome back too.

I wasn't far, just off investigating a new hobby.

Hope you had a good Christmas and a happy new year to you (and everyone).

Paul

Re: LE-A656 settings thread *Part 2*

I tried to use mumid's SM settings because I don't have mesuring equipment. It improved a little picture quality... but not sure is it maximum. Maybe the latest firmware is not the best for avoiding of blur?

Re: LE-A656 settings thread *Part 2*

I have everythign runnning into an amp and then it is all outputed through 1 HDMI cable (topfield runs into it via Component) so i would need only 1 setting, unless of course i connect the TV to the amp via component solely for purposes of making a setting for SD.

I think i might test the PQ through HDMI on the HD settings v the PQ through Component with the SD settings.

Thanks for that. Just a quick question, how do you find HD on your 656? I've got 40" 686 model and am considering getting SKY HD to get the full benefit of tv esp for football viewing.

Any feedback welcome, cheers

The settings for component will vary quite a lot for settings using the HDMI sockets. There is also more processing involved when using component with digital sources and displays.

All the HD channels look fantastic and very noticably better, PQ wise, than the best SD channels.

I was watching Wild Hogs on one of the movie channels last night and it was incredibly detailed, with great three dimensional qualities and colour accuracy.

For a while, BBCHD was the pinnacle of PQ in respect of all the HD channels. Now though, it would seem that the rest have caught up, or at least the ones that I watch. Rush HD serves up very good PQ too.

It's not something I seem to get used to either as every time I watch a well produced program or movie, I still get blown away by the PQ.

As for football, I'm not really a fan but, what I have seen (on BBCHD) has been excellent, with no ghosting and again, great detail and 3 dimensional quality. Put it this way, you can see what the fuss is about with HD.

You should also notice that the SD PQ gets better too. I'm even happy with ITV on mine, after a little fiddling.

One thing I will say though is that you will become spoiled and start to notice the average broadcasts that crop up. When this happens, I just switch over to something that looks good.

Question Re: LE-A656 settings thread *Part 2*

Hi

I'm looking for the best settings for LE40A626 (6ms, mat).

I see that many people recommend using the same settings as the A656 (4ms, gloss).

Is this normal?

Only you can decide what the best settings are for you. Try a few out and see what you like the most.

Re: LE-A656 settings thread *Part 2*

Hello,

Finally got my TV today and love it, just one thing though :

Im running into it via one HDMI cable from my Onkyo 606
My BD-P1500 runs into the amp and the amp is set to "through" meaning in theory im getting 1080p.

BUT

when i go into the "Picture Options" Screen mode, DNIe, HDMI Black Level are all greyed out and the manual tells me thats becsue it isnt receiving an HDMI input ... but thats teh only thing connected into it.

Any ideas ??

Ignore all that above .... well some of it.
I have now put the HDMI directly into the TV from the BD-P1500 and the "Picture Options" Screen mode, DNIe, HDMI Black Level are still greyed out, is there something im missing from the manual ??

Ta

I have now re-read the manual and it states that they are only available if certain things are selected and HDMI black if the output is being sent RGB, which the BD-P1500 and the Xboxx obvioulsy arent then.

Re: LE-A656 settings thread *Part 2*

Hey everyone, I wonder if anyone can help me?

I've spent many hours over the last few days reading these settings threads and twiddling the settings on my LE46A656 whilst watching Blu-Ray material played through my PS3. (I'm also upgraded to the latest firmware 1020.1, in case that makes any difference?)

My main query is with regards to black levels and brightness...

Of course the first and foremost way of adjusting this is by using the "brightness" in the TV settings. Then there's the "HDMI black level" in the Picture options (which seem to have a similar effect to lowering the brightness if I'm not mistaken?) and just to confuse matters, in the PS3 settings you can select to use either Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr, RGB or RGB Full Range, all of which have a HUGE impact on the black levels!

I have tried a few different combinations of these settings but I can't seem to work out which one is the "best". My thinking is that the PS3 should probably be set to "RGB full Range" as I think this enables the PS3 to output a wider range of colours to compatible TV's?

The problem is that when I use "RGB Full Range" on the PS3 in conjunction with "HDMI Black Level" set to low on the TV, the picture is VERY dark and requires the brightness to be turned up much higher thank most people have it.

Basically, can anyone give me a definite answer as to whether it's best to only use certain settings that I've mentioned above? I'm kind of swinging towards using the RGB Full Range and having the HDMI Black Level to normal on the TV as I've got a feeling this may be some sort of processing on the TV's part?

I'm waffling now lol... can anyone help?

I'd say you have the right idea going with RGB full and HDMI normal, so you see some detail in the blacks. HDMI low looks good, but crushes detail IMO.
