i ask because there price on the w4500's are even cheaper than the pixamania.

according to there returns policy, people shouldve been able too?

anyone??
It's a while since I dealt with them so I can't comment on on their returns policy but they are a legitimate company and they say they'll accept returns within 7 days once in perfect condition and with all packaging intact.Unless somebody comments to the contrary I would feel confident dealing with them.

If you connect it via the VGA cable you can watch upscaled dvds on it.

Re: Sony W4500 Series 100Hz,50.000:1 Dynamic contrast,DLNA *Part 2*

Dear gentlemen,

last time I was reporting an issue about the rainbow-effect on our 46W4500. The problem still persists but it may not be that annoying when you are not looking for it. Now I have an other issue:

I received a PS3 for Xmas, I really love it! Of course, I use HDMI 1.3 (not the cheapest one) to connect it to the television. I use the PS3 also for HD movie playback. While watching an 1080p movie (Transformers) I noticed that sometimes a thin white line flashed but only for a blink. It happened about 8-10 times during the movie. Yesterday I watched I Am Legend also in 1080p, and that white line flash happened 2 or 3 times. It also happened few times while I was in the PS3 menu. I have already read about people reporting this issue about the W4500 and the V3000 model. My questions is: are we talking about the same phenomenon? Is it confirmed to be the TV's fault?

I would like to mention something else: when watching a very wide movie, you know when there is a black bar at the top and bottom even on a 16:9 TV. So during playback, I noticed that the very edge of those black bars (where it ends, the last 1mm or so) is not black but more like a bit greenish/yellowish which is a bit disturbing for me. It is not visible in dark scenes. Anyone else noticed that?

Thank you for the answers,
(yes I know I expect too much perfection)

It is because you have the sharpness turned up too high. Turn down to 6 or under and it will disappear! That's the trouble with edge sharpening - you can't choose which edges get sharpened

On the site HDTV Reviews – LCD TV & Plasma Television Display Rating they say that this LCD failes to 3:2/ 2:2 cadences in 480i/ 576i. Is this really a problem when you are watching a dvd?

Took delivery of the 46w4500 today and so far so good, well pleased! One question, does anyone use the game and film mode? Cheers.

No. Apparently all the Vieras fail it too. Probably because it doesn't really matter. They have to find something wrong don't they? This together with a gripe about no white balance controls (not that there is anything wrong with the white balance lol) were their only real criticisms.

I don't pretend to fully understand the details of 3:2/2:2 pulldown but, if it helps, when I play NTSC DVDs with Film Mode set to Auto1 it most certainly works, giving a noticeably smoother playback compared to Auto2 or Off. So something is being recognised

Re: Sony W4500 Series 100Hz,50.000:1 Dynamic contrast,DLNA *Part 2*

Hi everyone,

I've had my 40W4500 for about 2 weeks now and I've really got to grips with it after a good play with all the settings and controls.

Out of the box everything looks OK, but please, take a look at the other thread on here about the settings, and try some of these which will make it look even better.

So i guess i am one of the unique people on here who's posting about being happy with their TV :D Happy to report no clouding, no rainbow effects, even bought a PS3 and no white flashing lines over HDMI (although the PS3 HDMI goes through a Marantz amp along with the Xbox 360 on HDMI and then to the TV). The only thing i can see, but is not really a major factor is a small amount of backlight bleed in a couple of corners in a dark room, but again, adjusting the settings from standard really helped this.

Picture quality is amazing! I've watched Casino Royale and the first part of Planet Earth on Blu-Ray and WOW!! Stunning, as is the PS3 and Xbox 360.

In the beginning i had ordered the TV in October and it didn't arrive 'til December, so i had lots of time to read all the horror stories on here and was really worried at some points. But i'm more than happy with my purchase and would recommend the TV to anyone thinking of buying.

Cheers.

XRTurbo,

Have you posted any settings yet? If not would you mind posting your current settings for SD only (normal TV viewing). Would like to compare them to mine. I'm also pleased with my new TV, and like you only have slight bleed in corners. Have eliminated most of it with calibrated settings but would like to compare settings with you if that's ok.

Cheers

Rob

Thanks a lot! I just wonder why that line isn't visible when watching 1080i TV-broadcast.

Re: Sony W4500 Series 100Hz,50.000:1 Dynamic contrast,DLNA *Part 2*

hey everyone, question on connecting optical. i've got sony 40w4500, ps3 and philips 5.1 surround. i want sound from all these sources to go through philips. what would be a good (best ?) idea for connection scheme ?
my first thought is: optical from tv to philips (ps3 will send sound to tv through hdmi and tv will forward it to philips ?)
p.s. philips is kinda oldish, about 5-6 old, but does have optical.

HDMI from PS3 to TV
Optical from PS3 to Phillips.
Set PS3 audio options to output bitstream over optical if 5.1 can decode DTS,PCM if not.

Cos there's no edge there for it to sharpen when you are watching fullscreen as opposed to letterbox.

I keep seeing people refer to 'backlight bleed' on this set - what does this actually mean? Are we talking about a lighter area in the corners when the screen is black?

My 40W4500 arrives next week so I want to look out for it

yes, basically when the screen is black, but tv is on, u see light patches (most of the time in corner areas). http://www.nuckinfutz.org/otherfiles...ght-bleed2.jpg
I am soooo lucky, i have no bleeding at all. maybe because i bought it at Sony Center ?

Trouble is your TV won't be doing any decoding of any of your HDMI sound inputs. Assuming you are getting digital sound output via your HDMI then I'm thinking you are gonna have to upgrade to an HDMI amp

When watching footy on TV just connect the TV optical out to the amp's second optical in (if it has one). Normal broadcast will be stereo but Sky HD does 5.1, I believe

Lower your backlight and light bleed is not an issue with the vast majority of panels.

EDIT - scrap the below, its for shifting the Horizontal / Vertical Shift which is under the MENU > SETUP > SCREEN SETTINGS, although the manual doesn't mention you can do this on the remote

I found something not listed in the manual today on the 46" model and was wondering if anyone knew what it meant.

Switch to HDMI1 and don't have anything on-screen. Press the UP arrow on the remote and you will see an option called SCREEN FORMAT: with the following values you can scroll through using UP and DOWN...

Smart
Smart (up) 1-4
Smart MAX
Smart (down) 1-4
Smart MIN

Any ideas what this is all about?

Hi all just noticed on the John Lewis web site that their 40w4500/4710 is now priced at £999.00 which i believe is their lowest advertised price ever. This includes the 5 year guarantee.

They attribute the price cut to a vat reduction but 2.5% would not have given a reduction this large. Seems like a good buy to me.
