TVs with MPEG4 HD tuners

Hi all,

I am moving to NZ where they have Freeview HD broadcast using MPEG4.

Are there any TVs available in the UK that I can buy which will work with MPEG4 HD signals? I think the Sony W4000 series does but does anyone know of any others?

Thanks,

benwolf

Re: TVs with MPEG4 HD tuners

AFAIK there are no TV's sold in the UK as yet with MPEG 4 HD tuners. The Sony Website makes no reference to one in the tech specs of the W4000 or any other model as far as I could see.

Sony V4500 series, Sony W4000 series, Sony W4500 series, Sony Z4500 series, Sony X4500 series, Samsung A556 and Samsung A676 Series all have the MPEG-4 capabilities.

Not in the UK.

Benwolf, try having a look round Pixmania.com. They normally supply French TV's, so they should have MPEG-4 tuners in.

Oh!, thats disappointing! Here in Finland all the above series have the MPEG-4 playing capabilities. Maybe the OP should order one from pixmania.com instead.

Re: TVs with MPEG4 HD tuners

Here's a big list of all the French models which have MPEG-4 HD tuners in TV LCD/Plasma +90 cm, recherche avec lcd, hd ready 1080p, hd tv 1080p, tuner mpeg4/hd

Be careful of the Sony's as it's hard to tell which have the MPEG-4 tuners in. I think ours is the 40W4000U, the 40W4000E seems to have the MPEG-4 tuner in, but i'm unsure about the 40W4000AEP but it looks like it doesn't.

Surely thats because in Finland DVB-T is Mpeg4? -its mpeg2 in the UK until next year when some HD multiplexes will be in Mpeg 4. A HD TV will have to be able to decode both then but as yet AFAIK no manufacturer is offering this in the UK

Re: TVs with MPEG4 HD tuners

Thinking about it, if you want to buy from the UK instead of France there might be a couple of sets that have them in. I think the LExxA756, LExxA856, and LExxA956 have them in as they still have the MPEG-4 decoding hardware in to play MPEG-4 files over USB/ Ethernet. I don't know if you would have to flash them with the French firmware though. I've no idea if you could use the NZ firmware on them with a bit of renaming of the files as they normally get the Asia models. I'm sure there were a couple of other manufactures TV's that could play MPEG-4 files over USB too.
