No need for game mode, I have been playing online for a month or so and I'm still having great success with rankings etc.

So the difference in black levels isn't that huge? The Z4500 compared to 2009 LCDs for example.

I will buy online so I need to know beforehand

Well I have only tested the w5500 out of the 09 models...think its the only one out at the mo. The black level is definitely deeper on the new w5500 compaired to the z4500, noticably so, but the shadow detail isn't as good imo as the z4500's, due to its higher gamma. Blacks appeared slighly more crushed on the w5500. I have no doubt the new z5500 will have the best blacks so far on a non led backlight but its not out yet, and will more than likely be very pricey

It depends on what you want though, for me the w5500 isn't as good as the older w4500 and certainlt not as good as z4500, but if your after deep blacks and not too concrned about losing a slight bit off the primary colour accuracy then go for it. Its still a great set and the blacks truly do impress but all in all I much prefered the z4500 and thats why I bought one

The Z is still over priced imo, think about £1250 is the going rate now. W5500 can be had alot cheaper.

This will be my first "proper" TV (I have a Samsung 23R86 now, which is 2 years old and the black levels are bad), so I don't know exactly what I want I just want a TV that works well with games (I notice the input lag in R86) and makes me go "WOW" when watching HD material / upscaled DVDs. Hopefully zero clouding too. Panasonic V10 could be the best choice PQ-wise, but I don't know if I could live with the constant fear of image retention, phosphor trails, uneven screen wear etc.

I dont mind if they want to flog them off cheaper due to a marketing excercise.
This may be a stupid question, but what is the difference between v1.0 and v1.3?

Re: Sony Bravia Z4500 LCD with 200Hz Motionflow

I ordered the 40Z4500 after playing videogames on my friend's Samsung A656. The 100Hz mode was amazing so the Z4500 can only be better, and without the annoying input lag.

Arriving next week

I believe the upcoming Z5500 doesn't have a subwoofer, when the Z4500 does?
Why would they have dropped the sub?

I got it already! Fast delivery this time.

So far it seems quite excellent. The blacks are good but obviously not plasma-good. No clouding, just a VERY slight bleed in one corner. And I mean it's so minor I almost don't notice it in the dark with a black screen.

Motionflow is amazing with some games. It doesn't work with games like Killzone 2 because KZ2 has so much motion blur that 200hz can't fix it and it doesn't look right. 60fps games like Wipeout HD on the other hand are incredible with it. Smoothest I've ever seen.

This is important, READ CAREFULLY : Although the Z4500 is quite responsive on any setting, the Game Mode with this TV is superb. Every single TV I've played games with seems worthless after this one. That 0-10ms input lag makes a HUGE difference in KZ2 for example, and I'm not even that good at it.

I'm not touching the 2009 models after trying this one out They'd better fix the input lag issues.

E: After being on for about 4 hours the bleed appeared on another upper corner as well, but it was still so subtle that I'm definitely not returning this. With any light on the screen I didn't notice it, not even with 2.35:1 content.

It used to be that better audio quality was a staple feature of higher end models, that's not so much the case any more, more and more people are happy to have separate speakers, it's also another place where the manufacturer can try to make a sale.

Panasonic are doing the same.

Just got my 52Z4500 on Weds evening (thought I got a bargain for £1850), and am now in the process of having a play; so far I'm far from disappointed and it is interesting to note that it has been a rather big leap up from my X3000

Read this thread from start to finish and have picked up some good tips. Anything that might be worth noting for the 52" model (it's the first 52" I've had)?

Cheers guys,

Any reason you decided against waiting for the Z5500 that surely is only round the corner from releasing - and would have to be seen as an improvement over the 4500?

52 inch...you lucky bugger

Haven't heard from you for a good while, nice to hear from you again. I can imagine going from x3000 to z4500 must be a significant upgrade, x3000 was great a year ago but nowadays sony just keep on pumping out new improved models in a matter of months. Only seems like yesterday when the 4500's came out

£1850 does seems like a great price for 52 inch. Personally I love watching bluray on this set but for me its HD sport where the Z4500 really shines

Keep us posted on how you get on with your new set

200hz is certainly an improvement on the 100hz varient. Also the z4500 panel has a quicker response time than the rest of the range (4500's) so motionblur is much improved.

Panasonics neo pdp 600hz sets are a little bit misleading imo. Plasma's already have excellent motion resolution, it was hard for me to tell any real benefit for using the MCFI on g10.

On the Z4500 it is clearly visible to see the benefits of motionflow.

Hiya,

As I'd considered the 5500 myself, from my own particular POV, I opted for the 4500 based on the fact that it was a 10-bit panel (I know that it's generally thought this doesn't make much of a 'real world' difference, but IMHO it mattered) and the fact that I got a great deal on the screen (paid for and then delivered - BNIB - to my door in less than 2 hrs )...

Moreover, as CraigUK has kindly shared on the thread, the 4500 actually - in real world terms - has some plus points that the 5500 has missed out on due to Sony's 'cost-cutting' measures.

Must be said, after calibrating with the Halo 3 "Set Up" disc, I had a blast on the 360 this afternoon - absolutely stunning with MotionFlow on Standard. Really didn't think it would have made that much difference but it did

That said, I'm sure the 5500 will prove to be a damn fine screen, but the 4500 is just what I wanted, and I don't believe the 5500 would have offered me anything major above the 4500.

Regards to all,

LAGAVULIN

Hiya again buddy, good to hear from you too...

I've always shied away from 52" in the past, believing it to be too big for my room, but after weighing up all the measurements for the Z4500, I was pleasantly surprised that it measured only 2cm in length more than my X3000. Had some money saved (and getting my new credit-card with 12 months interest free on purchases last Tues) I thought "b***er it!" 52" should be a nice upgrade - and it was...

Yeah, I was pretty confused by all the 'new' models...that said, I was like a kid in a sweet shop...

Yeah, the closest online I could get was £1830 delivered next day. I went to my mate's store and as he had stock, he let one go at the £1850 mark and said he'd get it dropped off within a couple of hours. True to his word, I paid for it a 4pm, and by 5.30pm it was at my door Also got the Sony 3-year warranty as well.

Yeah I agree, BD's are an absolute treat on this screen Playing quite a bit of 360 recently too, and was amazed at the improvement with Motion-Flow. It's also nice to know that my wife loves the 'speckled' Midnight Sky fascia as well. All in all, a very satisfied Bravia owner (again!)...

And sure, will let the screen burn in for a week or so and get everything calibrated and report back with any issues (or not). My wife's suggested investing in a new 'multi-region' BD spinner too, so that might prove to be the icing on the cake...

Take care and have a great weekend

Must admit the 'speckled' midnight blue bezel was what swung it for me with the missus

I play a lot of GT5 Prologue on the PS3, always looked very smooth, then I got the w4500 and was very impressed how well motionflow worked with driving sims...now I have the z4500 and its hard to believe this game can look any better

Am planning on trying a few games on the PS3 this pm

BTW - am I right in thinking that "x.v.Colour" is HDMI's v1.3 "Deep Colour"? After a bit of experimenting, I find, on certain movies, x.v.Colour makes skin-tones etc., look much more natural; whilst with others it can look a little bland

Regards for the sunny weekend

x.v. colour and Deep Colour are two different things.

x.v. colour results in a wider range of colours being available whereas Deep Colour is the ability to display a higher number of discrete shades of each colour.

Thanks very much for that I didn't realise this, but does seem to answer why it 'improves' on the PQ of certain material.

Cheers,

For me it was simply the price. Z5500 will probably have more input lag too, and the speakers are downgraded.

I have heard from a few different sources that the new release of TV's will be poorly finished with cheaper materials, coupled with the price and ultimately a poorer tv picture i have decided to go with the current model.

Lagavulin currently there is no media which is encoded with deep colour. PS3 has this option (full RGB) but there are no games or video which are encoded with it....AFAIK.

XV colour is Sony's/Panasonics marketing name for the colour space in which deep colour functions. I look forward to seeing some Deep Colour content when it comes out. For now though its best to leave everything on auto setting because if you enable full RGB on PS3 then you will find that blacks often appear crushed. Besides the Z4500 is not deep colour enabled anyway. I think I right in saying only the kuro and sonys X4500 are able to display deep colour.....when some content is available of course

Re: Sony Bravia Z4500 LCD with 200Hz Motionflow

i see krishav have got a great price on this tv, they are offering the 46" for £1350!

things is, i still ahve a lovely old 28" sony widescreen and i am not so much needing the 46" as i am wanting it...and to this day, i still have not seen an LCD set up to look comparable...having said that, the same still holds true of any CRT set in a tv shop - none of them are set up very well either so it's difficult to make an informed decision...

are the z5500 range not out yet? no comparisons available? worthwhile holding out or for comparison on price alone and ability of z4500, would i be better off biting the bullet?

Yes, I assumed as much as I expect for the function to 'work' it has to have material 'encoded' in the format to start with?

So 'x.v.Colour' is a version of the Deep Colour standard? A bit confused, but yeah, I've decided to leave the Colour Space settings to 'Auto'; the majority of stuff looked better at that, so don't fix what ain't broken, eh

Cheers for the info Craig,

Best wishes
