Re: Sony W4500 Series 100Hz,50.000:1 Dynamic contrast,DLNA

I bought the 46W4710 (replaced it with W4000). No idea what the difference is between the 46W4500. Someone who knows? Called Sony and they say that its exactly the same. External and technically the same. So why its more expensive? Very strange......

Price difference is also enormous. I bought the 46W4710 for € 2100.00. On Sony see I that the 46W4500 costs
€ 1885.00. I live in the Netherlands.

Can anyone explain this?

Not the problem described, vertical lines or bars. Clouding in general on LCD's yes, but this problem has only been present on some w4000 46" and 52" models so far.

I have returned my w4000 for this and bought a w4500 instead. I bet the same problem will be present on my new set...

So what do people think? Is it worth diving in right now and ordering a 40w4500 from somewhere like Robert Whyte for circa £950 or will it be best leaving it for a few weeks and see if the price drops? I'm ready to buy a new set but not desperate, especially if the price will drop in a few weeks time?

I'm in the same position. All set to upgrade my 32S2530 but I decided to hold fire for a few weeks - may get an even better bargain after they appear in the shops.

Depends, if the DLNA media streaming and 100hz motionflow are really important to you then it may be worthwhile, otherwise i'd stick with the w4000, which is a known quantity (thanks hdtvtest) and can be had for as low as £850 online. I wouldn't have thought the black level on the 4500 will be that much better despite the higher rated contrast ratio.

Personally, i've just gone for a 40w4000 from John lewis for £969, not the cheapest but at least I know a JL van will be delivering it (meaning no middlemen transit people), plus 5yrs warranty as well, and I hear their returns policy is pretty good. Normally I wouldn't care for the extra warranty but having owned a number of LCD's I think it's about time I stuck with one for a while and wait for the tech to mature.

Where are people ordering these from? Cheapelectricals.com now have delivery for 20th Oct whilst when I 'ordered' a few weeks ago it had 12 Sept. If they're a month behind everyone else I'm going elsewhere. But where to go? Guess I need to look around.

Fair points. Was thinking of going for the 40W4000 (available for £794 online from electrosaver, or for £860 from digitech with a 5 year warranty) but in a few weeks you'll probably be able to pickup the new 40W4500 for under £900 with a 5 year warranty (Robert Whyte currently doing it for £960 with 5 years) so its more or less a no brainer for me - wait for the W4500.

Accepted, we haven't seen any reviews on this new set but I think its generally accepted that it has the same proven technology that's in the W4000 plus 100Hz. I will be very surprised that once HDTV test and alike get their hands on it and push out some reviews they'll be nothing but excellent - as per W4000 reviews.

So then, pay between £860 - £960 now for a W4000 with 5 yrs warranty or wait a few weeks and pay around £900 for a W4500 with 5 yrs warranty at a time when there will be some reviews on this new set - very simple choice for me..... I'll be keeping my card in the wallet and holding out a few more weeks!

I think you made the right choice, I am doing the same waiting for the w4500. The higher contrast ratio 100hz and DLNA will make it worth the wait for me.

Well took the plunge and ordered the 40 from cheepelectricals was going for the w4000 at first, the price went up £40, I was tracking the price on this one web site. I know I'm taking a bit of a risk not waiting for a review but I thought the w4000 is well regarded, plus if I'm not happy it goes back.

I'm not sure if I need this DLNA - I already have the TV set up via cable as a second monitor on 8800GT using Vista Media Center. Could someone give a detailed explanation of what DLNA is/does or provide a link? Would DNLA make things any easier/better than my current setup?

Thanks

DNLA (Digital Network Living Alliance) is an industry standard and is basically a consortia of many electronics manufacturers (sony being one) agreeing upon this standard. It is designed to make the transfer of media between all sorts of home & consumer electronics (TV's / Game Consoles / Mobile Phones / computers etc) effortless and without complex configuration). So for example is you have a sony laptop that is DNLA certified, you'll be able to view media from the laptop on a DNLA certified TV with minimal hassle. You'll still have to connect the laptop to the Tv though using an ethernet cable (TV's don't support wireless yet)!

The link below makes good reading where the vice president of sony marketing in Europe admits that DNLA on the new W4500 range is very primitive.

http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/news/inde...&NewsID=103719

In my opinion I wouldn't get too excited about DNLA on this set - I think Sony are more interested in branding the TV with the DNLA industry logo to increase its selling potential rather than providing the end user with great new technology - as the article states, its still in a very primitive form!

Re: Sony W4500 Series 100Hz,50.000:1 Dynamic contrast,DLNA

So this means that the W4500 will only show JPEG pictures and play MP3 music via DNLA.

The W4000 can already show pictures via USB-stick. I don't find a usage of playing MP3 on the TV.

Cosmetic differencies? I called Sony and they said there are no differencies between W4500 and W4710. Technical and cosmetic....no difference! I asked them why they release the W4710 if there is no difference. They said that some shops asked Sony specially for the W4710. Maybe they want to sell it for a higher price and that is the reason for it??

I havent seen a W4710 pic but I suppose it will have minor cosmetic differencies. The W4710 is a derivative model that is given to a retailer exlusively to be sold. This is a pan european thing and all bravias have derivative models as well

Very strange because Sony said there will absolutelly no difference. I have to contact my shop because 300 euro's more i don't want to pay because its W4710.

Yes, think that is pretty much the case. In my opinion, the DNLA capability on the W4500 is more of a gimmick rather than giving the user a great new feature. I don't think anyone should let the DNLA element of this TV influence their decision in purchasing it in any way whatsoever.

the music playback isnt via DLNA only. You can plug a USB with music and directly play them other than the DLNA

Thanks for that. So are you able to control things using the TV's remote or do you still have to use the laptop's controls?

Re: Sony W4500 Series 100Hz,50.000:1 Dynamic contrast,DLNA

Anyone has a W4500 in house yet ?

Sony NL told me that the first batch is delivered to the NL shops on friday 5 sept !

I have mine 46w4500 ordered, but the first batch was only retail shops like BCC or Mediamarkt. Tried saterday to see it at Mediamarkt Maastricht, but no luck, they didn't have it. They could not tell me if any other Mediamarkt would already have it.

I ordered it with a internetshop, expected time of arrivel is 17 Sept, I'm keeping my fingers crossed :-)

SONY told me that there are no differences at all between those models. It's actually the same, just with a different number. The reason is logistics. Only SONY Centers will have a 4720 model (if I remember the model number correct). Maybe there will be more numbers for other type of dealers.

I am expecting the TV also 17 september. I hope it will not be delayed. Buyed at BCC shop in the Netherlands.

Chris, what do you think of the ''S-Force Front Surround'' function on the W4500. The W4000 doesn't have this function.

What the W4500 makes attractive to me compared with the W4000:

- 100hz
- USB 2.0 /picture and also MP3
- S-Force Front Surround
- Better design/look
- Higher dynamic contrast 50.000

I think they sometimes use this gimmick in the US.

The idea is to provide a better profit to retailers that offer a "price guarantee", which of course only applies to identical products. A different code means, therefore, that those retailers can decline to match prices on the W4500, because the W4710 would be considered a "different product". This being said, I don't know if there is anything like this in Europe (at least not in Switzerland where I live).

On top, uninformed buyers (i.e. 90% of the market) will associate a higher number with a high spec product and, hence, be ready to pay a premium for it.

If only they put the same effort in bring the products faster to the market place!
