I have also ordered the Spyder2 express. I will use the colorimeter with ColorHFRC. If I use my laptop, do I run a particular disc through the xbox for the sensor to read the settings? I assume that I load the software on to the PC and plug the usb sensor in to the back.

Its only because I downloaded HFCR on my laptop and used the simulation mode, when I ran the test all the colours came up on the actual laptop and I need to know how to get the test patterns to show on the TV and not the laptop.

I know its probably obvious like using the HD DVD disc from AVSforums but wanted to make sure.

Again, many thanks.

Martin.
You may notice that whites may get an ever so slightly yellow tinge to them as opposed to the blue tinge they're likely to have now. The overall picture is likely to look 'warmer' too. This is because the specific standards that we calibrate to set the greyscale at a colour temperature of 6500 Kelvin.
It's not anything to do with the brightness (luminance) level of the whites.

Have a look at post #2426 for calibration disk info. And yes, you'll need to run one of these disks (they contain test patterns) on the Xbox, if that's the input you're calibrating.

Unfortunately, nothing is obvious when it comes to this subject. It's a shame as, people should be sharing their knowledge more.
If you ever get stuck, Mumid, Rado and I, to name a few will happily try and help. Failing that, the AVSforums are a great place for calibration info!

DNIe can only be switched on when using the dynamic setting.

The AVSHD is good - if you have got a hd drive for your xbox, the DVE hd disc is really good too. The calibration for dummies guide is a great resource and has everything you need to get you started mate.

I wouldnt say calibrated settings make whites yellow, IMO it makes them perfectly white. Your brain might just trick you into thinking they look a bit yellow as it is so used to seeing overly blue whites being displayed on TV's.

At a football match the other day, I was paying extra notice to what everything looked like (shades of colour of grass, players, kits etc etc - sad i know) so I could compare what it looked like to watching the highlights of it on the TV and I was very impressed with the accuracy of my calibrated TV.

Re: LE-A656 settings thread

thanks everyone,

can you point me in theright direction when starting? Do I put all the menu settings to the middle then run the calibration. Can I leave it on warm2 or should I change it for the calibration?

Does the color HCFR ask for particular test patterns so I know which ones to run.

Sorry for all the questions.

Martin.

You can put the picture settings wherever you like. I'd leave them where you have them and measure everything. You'll then get an idea of how 'out' they are now. You can then adjust them to get where you want with them.

Yes, Color HCFR will prompt you for the specific test pattern it requires!

Calibrate basically means to 'adjust settings' calibrate is like 'fine tune'

All it is, is you yourself adjusting the brightness, contrast, colour etc etc to fit your taste and to get the best picture in your opinion.

No, that's not calibrating, that's fiddling with the settings...

Calibrating involves using test patterns and possibly specialist equipment to adjust the picture to meet a specific requirements.
This can be performed by a professional (an ISF engineer) or you can do it yourself.

First I've heard of people paying for people to adjust there TV to get a better picture.

Is it worth it and how much does it cost?

Re: LE-A656 settings thread

Hi Deano

To have a professional ISF calibration carried out on your TV is likely to cost more than £300. Reading American forums this is very common and many Yanks have their TVs calibrated.

Is it worth it? The answer is it's entirely up to you! But from what I've read on forums, you end up with the best quality picture that your TV can produce.

As Paul says, you can purchase the calibration kit and carry out the calibrations yourself. This is what I intend to do. The problem is there is a lot to learn and the art of calibration is a deep and technical subject. It's not easy.

Like Martin (leugeboy007) I shall be purchasing a Spyder colorimeter kit and having a go!

Re: LE-A656 settings thread

Hi Deano,

I purchased an A656 a few months ago and visiting this forum is the best thing I did! Everyone is helpful and you should be able to get big improvements on your TV.

I have just purchased the Spyder colorimeter which should come today. I am an absolute beginner with calibrating but will post how I am getting on as some people may find it helpful.

For the record I purchased Spyder 2 express and will try to use Color HCFR to calibrate! Purchased this colorimeter purely as it was cheaper to be honest but should do the job for me.

Cheers, Martin.

Re: LE-A656 settings thread

Hi,

I couldnt find any English manuals for the HCFR so I assume it is best to negotiate your way round with trial and error. Would I use the Rec709 setting for my HD inputs and use the SD part for SKY+?

I was planning to plug in a normal DVD player into EXT2, calibrate it then use those settings for SKY+. Shame SKY dont have a channel for test patterns which I believe have been requested loads of times to no avail.

Many thanks, Martin.

Color HCFR is very intuitive to use. Just have a play with it when your Spyder turns up and you'll see how easy it is to use.

As you've said, for any HD source, use the Rec.709 colourspace. For any PAL SD sources, use the Rec.601 colourspace.
