Many thanks DJ Mike; mine weren't too different, a few tweaks here and there, but with the White Balance settings added I now have a very satisfying picture indeed, excellent colours, velvety blacks (gives excellent results for monochrome films too). I've kept the Colour Tone at 'Normal' and Gamma at '0'.

One question; is '50' a neutral point? Does, for instance, going up from 50 in 'Sharpness' sharpen the picture and going below below soften it? Having said that, I've found '0' for sharpness better for viewing DVDs and '20' better for broadcast TV.

When I used the DVE disc sharpness was set to 20 to lose the softness without the ringing. So I use the 20 setting for DVD and 0 for Sky SD, same as you. I also used the F86 settings including the WB settings, which made the picture look a little yellow, but you do get used to it.

Every now and then I give in and stick it back on Dynamic with:
Con 95
Bri 45
Col 40
Backlight 6
Energy saving Med
which also looks good to me. Then I give myself a slap and put it back on Movie mode .

It disappears when disabled but I quite like the look that motion plus gives.
However the intermittant judder is too annoying to ignore.

This is using a Toshiba XE1 HD DVD player with the 2.8 firmware with the 46" A656. I'm presuming that because 100hz is not a multiple of 24hz that this is causing the judder due some sort of pulldown issue?

I'm going to try tweaking about with some of the settings suggested here.
Other notable bits and bobs the LE40A656 offers include a 120MHz mode designed for purer playback of 24fps sources (as 120MHz is a straight x5 multiple of 24fps, helping to keep the necessary processing algorithms simple)

thats from this site http://www.trustedreviews.com/tvs/re...40in-LCD-TV/p2

Actually,I watch almost everything in Dynamic ( ), which probably means I need a fair few slaps too.
Anyway,my Dynamic settings are quite similar to yours, with the following tweeks:-

Contrast 85
Brightness 40
Colour 55 (I know,I know...)
Backlight 6
Sharpness 25
Energy Save Low

Re: LE-A656 settings thread

I do turn the brightness and contrast down to around 40 and 90 too, similar to you, but every now and then it looks a little dark. This tweaking is a bit of a curse sometimes though. I find it hard to sit through a film without going into the menu, lol. My family go mad .

Still, better to have the ability to configure than not have it at all!

Re: LE-A656 settings thread

Hey mray,
Totally agree with you. There's nothing quite like a good tweak.Does you the world of good.
Seriously though, don't you find you have to keep altering stuff depending sometimes on the actual channel/programme you're watching?
Classic example...I was watching the new Heroes last week with the tv settings I'd been most happy with, and the picture was absolutely stunning, even in SD (don't have HD yet). Then a couple of days later, whilst watching the new Lost, there was loads of crushed shadow detail during dark scenes, and the blacks, which were blacker than a really black thing on Heroes, just loooked a horrible misty grey on Lost.Yet I hadn't altered any of the settings inbetween.
I tend to find this sort of thing happens quite a lot with different programmes so,like you,I drive the rest of the family round the twist, constantly changing the settings.

Almost forgot, the only way I could get decent blacks during the dark scenes in Lost was to turn the room lights on!

I agree, the brightness levels do seem to vary a little between channels. I suppose once we've all had the TV a while (or get bored, or evicted by angry family members!), we will all settle on a happy medium where settings are concerned. Then again, maybe not !!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: LE-A656 settings thread

I recently found another forum and people having trouble with 'purple haze', it seems the trick was to do a factory reset and then use the following picture settings:

Picture menu
Mode: Movie
Backlight: 3
Contrast: 93
Brightness: 44
Sharpness: 0
Color: 52
Tint: G50/R50

Detailed settings submenu
Black adjust: Off
Dynamic contrast: Off
Gamma: +3
Color space: Auto
Flesh tone: 0
Edge enhancement: Off
xvYCC: Off

White balance submenu
R-Offset: 25
G-Offset: 26
B-Offset: 25
R-Gain: 24
G-Gain: 23
B-Gain: 14

Picture options submenu
Color tone: Warm2
Size: Just Scan
Digital NR: Off
DNIe: [grayed out]
HDMI black level: [grayed out]
Film mode: [grayed out]
Blue only mode: Off
Auto motion plus 120Hz: Off

Setup menu
Entertainment: Off
Energy saving: Off

If anyone wants to give this a try, let us know how it goes.

Re: LE-A656 settings thread

You can only set the TV to suit your taste and your environment, but FWIW:

Mode - Movie

Backlight - 4
Contrast - 98
Brightness - 49
Sharpness - 10
Colour - 49
Tint - 46/54

Black adjust - off
Dynamic Contrast - off
Gamma - +1
Colour Space - Auto

White Balance;
R-offset - 15
G-offset - 15
B-offset - 14
R-Gain - 19
G-Gain - 15
B-Gain - 26

Flesh Tone - 0
Edge Enhancement - off

Colour Tone - Normal
Digital NR - off
HDMI Black Level - Low
100hz Motion Plus - Low

Energy Saving - Auto

I'm a little unsure on the sharpness setting; '0' seems to slightly blur the picture, or maybe it's that my 52" screen is bigger than my last. The HDMI Black Level setting means a very slight loss of detail, but the tradeoff is that, and the Energy Saving on auto, give me truly satisfying blacks and whites. I have no problems with Motion Plus on low, but any higher and there's noticable artifacting. BTW, touching the Colour Tone is a no-no if you watch any amount of monochrome films (which I do). As I say is, until I tweak again, this works for me; I don't game, and this seems to do the job for both cable and SD DVD (I don't have a Blu-ray player as yet), and I draw the line at separate settings for day and night. As I say, until I tweak again...

Re: LE-A656 settings thread

Hello everyone,

I bought a LE40A656 last week, and despite trying several of the settings posted here (thanks to those people) I seem to be having problems with one particular aspect of the picture.

My picture (this is on Sky or Digital Freeview) seems to suffer from excessive white highlights on people/clothing and areas of reflection, this is most prominent on peoples faces or light coloured clothes during external shots or strong studio lighting (BBC seems to be worst for this). During external scenes the sky is very bright white, and any reflections/highlights seem to bleed out fair portions of the picture, and its driving me to distraction.

Has anyone got any suggestions how this element of the picture can be rectified? I've reduced all the settings in the white balance menu to around 15 which has made some difference but not got rid of the problem. This is my first LCD TV so I'm something of a noob when it comes to these things.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: LE-A656 settings thread

Has anyone managed to come up with a setting where they think they might have reduced the black crush without affecting the quality too much? I never realised just how much black crush this TV deals. It's not as simple as just cranking up the brightness either, as the picture just goes bright and grey, and you still don't have the definition in the dark colours.

I'll continue to play, but I'm confident i've got a half decent movie setting to share if anyone wants to try. I will update when it's fully finished.

Toadus I have been saying black crush a lot and no one listens. The only way I have found to remove a lot of black crush is to put it in dynamic mode.

Color: 40
Tint: G50/R50

Detailed settings submenu
Black adjust: Off

Edge enhancement: Off
xvYCC: Off

White balance submenu
R-Offset: 25
G-Offset: 26
B-Offset: 25
R-Gain: 24
G-Gain: 23
B-Gain: 14

Picture options submenu
Color tone: Cool1

DNIe: [grayed out]
HDMI black level: [grayed out]

But do you need 24p when using 100hz, or vice-versa?

Yeah man. However, I think I've cracked it.

I now have the ultimate settings, I'm so happy with the PQ now, I still can't believe just how good it looks. A BIG thanks to John Hodson for the White Balance settings, these have made a huge improvement! Following those settings, I've tweaked them slightly to make, what I feel, the ultimate setting. Following those settings, I made some minor changes, and really enjoyed watching Spiderman the other night. However, I watched Pirates of the Caribbean last night, and found they were just a tad too bright, as the blacks looks a little too grey. So I've made some more changes and I'm pleased to say I think I've cracked it. John's White Balance settings make the picture darker, hence why the backlight it up more than normal and also the brightness, as a result, this definately helps the black crush issue which is brilliant! My final settings use the HDMI Black option, so the screen is a little darker, but it's up to you if you want it or not. OK, here goes... Chaps, give this a go and let me know what you think.

Backlight - 5
Contrast - 95
Brightness - 60
Sharpness - 5
Colour - 56
Tint - 46/54

Black adjust - off
Dynamic Contrast - off
Gamma - +1
Colour Space - Auto

White Balance:
R-offset - 15
G-offset - 15
B-offset - 14
R-Gain - 19
G-Gain - 15
B-Gain - 26

Flesh Tone - 0
Edge Enhancement - off

Colour Tone - Warm 1
Digital NR - off
HDMI Black Level - Low

Energy Saving - Low - IMPORTANT

I feel these settings are superb for watching Blu-rays via a PS3. I have my PS3 setup so that the AV output is RGB, not automatic. You will need to do this if you want to control the HDMI Black Level. Also, make sure you have RGB range set to LIMITED and not full.

I advise using virtually the same settings for gaming as well. Change the backlight from 5 to 6, change the colour tone from Warm 1 to Normal and change the sharpness to 25.

If you feel the blacks are too much with the settings above, you can turn the HDMI Black Level to Normal, but you will have to adjust the brightness to match. With these exact settings, if I turn the HDMI Black Level to Normal, I would then adjust the Brightness from 60 to 50. Like I said earlier, I watched Spiderman with the HDMI Black Level on Normal and it was excellent. But if you want to take a little risk of black crush to get an ever better experience, run the settings EXACTLY as I have posted above.

Good luck folks, let me know how you get on.

Re: LE-A656 settings thread

Thanks for that. I've been using those WB settings wherever possible, and it does make a big difference to digital noise, if there is any. Also, dynamic contrast on low and brightness on 49, which probably equals your two settings. Otherwise very similar to yours.

But what picture mode are you using? Movie or standard?

Thanks.

I use it on Movie mode. Try the settings exactly as I have set, you won't be disappointed.

EDIT: You can't set the Warm colour tone options on Normal, it must be on Movie to do this...

Hi Toadus,
Thanx for those settings, which I'll definitely try out when I get my blu ray player soon.
Can I ask,do you have Sky SD and if so would you be so kind as to post your settings for that thru RGB scart?
Cheers.

Sorry bud, I haven't got Sky. There's no harm in trying these White Balance settings with that though. I use an Xbox 360 via component, and these settings wroked well. I did have to adjust the brightness a bit though.

Re: LE-A656 settings thread

I'll give it a try, but I'm really happy with my current settings. The noise level has been reduced significantly, I'm just stunned by the PQ now.

If I change the colour settings, I assume I have to use the same white balance settings or it will screw up completely... ? I just don't want to touch my current set up.

Re: LE-A656 settings thread

is there any way of saving settings, I would like to keep one setting in movie mode but also do another setting in movie mode and rename it movie2 or something, so I can flick and see which is better... but I have not found a way to do this, any help?

Not exactly, but each input mode allows 3 different settings: Dynamic, Standard and Movie. From what I have tested, these 3 settings are all the same at a base level, it's just the settings each one specifically has which makes them look different. Hence, if you give Standard and Movie the EXACT same settings, in theory, they should be identical. That gives you 3 different settings per input which is better than 1...
