My old settings was done with firmware 1007.2.
Hi mate,

Could you tell me whether you noticed any benefits of the 1011.2 firmware on your panel ?

I guess what I'm trying to get at is, does it fix any issues on the 52" model ? Are there any issues on the 52" model ?

Thanks in advance.

Haven't noticed any differences. Except the wb-settings in the service menu. Next time i won't upgrade unless theres a good reason for it - took till 3am to get the calibration right again.
I might notice something over the next few days however - i've havent watched anything on it yet since the upgrade (other than greyscales and rgbcmykw patterns). The menu is the same.

No issues before - and hopefully no issues after the upgrade.

I've got to accept I haven't read all the posts about the new firmware but do we have a list of changes/fixes that for the new firmware?

also viol8r what would you set for the ps3 when gaming? the warm2 tone is more suited to movies, as the gaming industry doesn't follow the same standards

I don't think anyone has a clue as yet (apart from the fact that gamers seem happier, and it's monkeyed around with the SM settings); Samsung certainly haven't said anything.

No changelog has been released. I wrote to Samsung about a changelog, but their response was something like "why on earth did you upgrade the firmware? - was something wrong with your set?".

The firmware is on the Samsung service website, but no notes released with it to see what they've improved....

Correct - the games are not mastered at a specific standard, so there really is no right answer. Some games i run at the HD-settings and others (mainly FPS) at Entertainment mode = GAME (remember to put on sunglasses when changing the modes or you'll go blind).

Re: LE-A656 settings thread

I've tried simply changing the colour tone to normal and it looks good with your settings when playing games.

also, when you talk about turning on Y/Cr/Cb on the ps3 - how would I do this?

Also, should video output format be automatic, RGB or Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr. Should dynamic range control be on?

Re: LE-A656 settings thread

Viol8r - I carried out the FW upgrade last night, and bare in mind that I've had an ISF calibration carried out. I went into my SM where Gordon made changes, and jotted all the settings down. Now you mention WB settings, but I think you are reffering to a different area in the SM to where I had my settings changed. When I go into the SM, and then to the WB settings, I choose the bottom option called Movie. In there, under the Warm2 location, I have specific red and blue gains and offs, and also the gamma. In other words, my calibration is only correct when I watch content while in Movie mode and select Warm2. These settings WERE defaulted after the FW upgrade, but I've put them all back now. So the ones you say Samsung have changed after the upgrade, are they different settings? I don't think I have anything to worry about, but a little peace of mind wouldn't go a miss.

Hmm... That doesnt sound right. I dont think you can change the gamma/modes in the service menu (i don't remember and i'm not going in there again and having to redo the settings)...

The service menu is accessed by pressing a special combination on the remote (info, menu, mute, power). You need the wb settings from this menu along with the settings from the user menu (where you also have white balance and colour settings settings) if you had it ISF'ed.

EDIT: The WB settings in the SM are master settings giving a lot more fine-grained control. They have changed with the firmware upgrade, thus making any former WB settings from the user menu invalid (from a calibration perspective) as these rely on the master WB settings from the SM.

Yes, but I'm not sure where exactly you are refering to in the SM. There is an area in the SM called Movie, and this is within the WB settings sub menu. When you go into this menu area, if lists ALL the WB settings for NORMAL, COOL, WARM1, WARM2 etc. This is where I have had the specific config carried out. It was just the WB settings for WARM2 which I had adjusted. Of course the WB settings in the user menu are adjusted also...

EDIT: I actually wrote all these settings down prior to the upgrade, so I know what the specific WB settings were before the upgrade for all the individual colour tones if you need them... I can only assume the menu area you are refering to, is for a different mode, specifically NOT Movie mode.

Ok - think we're talking about the same thing then. I just don't remember anything about being able choose the modes in the service menu (but i tend to forget things i do at 2-3am).
The service menu should look something like this (from an F86, but it should almost be the same):

Samsung LE40F86 : Service Menu Options

EDIT: Ok - you are talking about option 10 in the SM, i was refering to option 3.

Yes. On our TVs, the Movie WB settings are actually a sub menu of option#3 WB settings... Just to confuse things! Hehe.

So I can only assume the WB settings you are saying that have changed, are the ones which refer to the NORMAL mode. As you know obviously, when you go into the User settings (not the SM) you can choose: Dynamic, Normal or Movie. The settings I have changed in the SM, ONLY affect the WARM2 mode when you are in Movie mode, does that make sense? So, assuming the WB settings you are refering to are indeed for Normal mode, then I shouldn't have anything to worry about. I hope... Hehe

Well. I never changed anything in the service menu, and must admit i didn't look at every setting (also i didnt have the old firmware settings written down as i never changed them). I'll just test out some more things later tonight in the service menu...

So the settings i provided in the calibration post will work for anybody who's never been in the service menu as this is based on the default service menu settings and only changes in the user menu.

When upgrading from 1007.2 to 1011.2 i noticed about a 15% increase in the blue and 5% decrease in the red when using the old calibration settings (from my post on page 18). The recalibrated 1011.2 user settings are available in my post on page 20. I don't know if the WB settings have changed in the firmware (as i didn't have the old settings written down) i just know that somethings changed.

I'm confused, Did upgrading change your WB settings as well? or just WB movie? as I did check WB on mine and there was no change with the upgrade. i'm now wondering if my upgrade worked, the S/W does state 1011.2 now though.

Thanks for the response.

I think I'll be leaving our new panel with the firmware it comes with then !

Re: LE-A656 settings thread

Can you have separate settings for "Day" and "Night" from the same source?

I dont know how to have that with this LCD, I own LE46A656

Same with people posted their "HD" and "SD" setting.

How do you manage to switch between those two? Do you change everytime you watch HD and SD from the same source?

Do you mean "HD" = Blu-ray / HD-DVD ? And "SD" = normal analog TV ?

Anyone?

Toadus or Viol8r, would it be too much to ask, from a fellow skandinavian, to peg you for good settings for SD and HD? From SM to norman menu settings. Im dying here, i lost everything i've done in past month to make pq great, and now after update, its trash. I would REALLY appreciate this.

Re: LE-A656 settings thread

After a few hours living with them, I can say that the key to viol8r's settings lies in replicating his Service Menu settings. The settings on their own were excellent, marrying them up with the WB settings from his Service Menu (as per the images he posted) is the icing on the cake - not sure if it's relevent that we both own 52s, but the image I'm getting now is just marvellous; detailed, lovely blacks, fabulous greyscale, life-like vibrant colour.

Odd, isn't it that many of these 656s seem to be emerging from the factory with different SM settings? I wonder if they go through some sort of automatic calibration process on the production line?

Re: LE-A656 settings thread

Hi John,

From following the two threads (Samsung LE..A65 thread and this settings thread) with a watchful eye for a period of time now, it has swayed me to purchase the 46" set. Now just waiting for delivery. I can see viol8r's settings are highly thought of and I am very keen on using them for when my set arrives. I just want to ask would it make a difference with my set being 46" instead of 52", even though both sets have exactly the same specs otherwise. If you could get back to me that would be extremely helpful. Also, is there a chance you could post some images (this goes out to anyone with this TV?).

Thanks.

TBH, I don't really know whether it would make a difference; I'm certainly more comfortable following settings from an owner with the same panel as mine. They only thing you can do if give them a go, but if you do go messing in the SM (1) be EXTREMELY careful (2) make a note of all you default settings so that you can go back to square one.

As for posting images, I'm never sure as to how useful they are (they can never be 'true') - honestly, the only way is to have a go yourself and see the results on your own panel in your own room, in your own lighting conditions.

Re: LE-A656 settings thread

Thanks alot. Yes, I'll give them a go. Can't wait for my set to arrive. When I've finished making changes in service menu, simply turning off the TV will save the settings is that correct? Thankyou for your info. I think I'll go with viol8r's settings as to be honest, any settings I do will simply never live up to calibrated settings. Quick question. Do you do any HD gaming on your TV? Xbox 360 or PS3. I've read about lag input but is it true that the new firmware update brings this down to only 10-15ms instead of the 30ms that it used to experience?

Quite right; and any copied settings, I suppose, cannot hope to match having your set professionally calibrated at home - but this is second prize...

Don't game, sorry, but from what I've read, that appears to be true.

Re: LE-A656 settings thread

Yes I know I've spent enough money on this TV, I think I'll save for 2/3 months then get it professionally calibrated if I'm not happy. However, from what I've read, and from the posts viol8r has actually made, I can see that people are happy with his settings and he sounds as if he knows what he is doing.

I'm just worried because I currently have a Toshiba Regza 37X3030D 1080p HDTV that I bought on the back of reviews but I have been left disappointed by the quality of the TV. I just don't want the same to happen again. From what people have stated though this TV is the closest thing to plasma blacks and I am really hoping that, once I've tweaked the settings, the final picture will blow me away

Re: LE-A656 settings thread

john,

you mention using viol8r's WB settings from the service menu.

i assume you mean the simple WB settings under the main menu and not going any further in than that?
