What colour is the surround actually, as its hard to tell on my PC
Is it a similar colour to the blueish tint on the W4000?
Or is it black?

I believe the E4000 has the same Midnight Sky finish as the W4000. So basically black but with a very subtle flickering of blue visible in certain conditions. There are also 3 other finishes, the only one confirmed for the UK being the E4050 which is Dark Walnut (brown).

I am pretty certain the E4000 won't be seen in the usual Currys/Comet Multispecialist type store in the UK..... because of the type of product it is and how it is designed to fit into homes it will only go into SCs, "home" style stores like the large M&Ss, and a handful of independents

Pixmania has the kdl-40W4000 listed as in stock for £1154 http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/1098...&CodePromo=oui. One of the only places to have it i think.

Given its meant to be out early July, I'm surprised its not listed more widely.
Play.com has taken their price and due date down.

Just seen the 'E' in store in teh flesh - It looks PIG UGLY how can something look so good on teh promo material but so crap in real life - looks cheap and tacky and teh dark surround strip ruins it - the W design looks a far better quality tv - never thought i'd be saying that

Re: New Sony KDL-E4000 Series Picture Frame(1080p,33.000:1 Contrast,Bravia Engine 2)

Completely agree bobbytoad.

The base colour of the E series is a very dirty shade of cream (think old PC monitor that has seen too much sun), and I suspect the light colour will actually distract attention from the screen, even in darkened rooms. And all the dark frame does is accentuate the bulk of the LCD by highlighting it's edges.

I'm trying hard to like the W series. The 32 inch (which is what I'm looking at), however, is badly proportioned - it uses the same base as the 40 inch - and so is oversized in my opinion. Has obviously been done as cost saving measure, but Samsung didn't make this mistake with the 656 range - everything is scaled accordingly.

I'm looking at LCD performance as well of course (my wife would say to an obsessive level!), but if I'm putting something this prominent in my living room it has to be reasonably inoffensive.

Re: New Sony KDL-E4000 Series Picture Frame(1080p,33.000:1 Contrast,Bravia Engine 2)

Hi, I saw a KDL E4000 in Putney Sony Centre. I thought the white looked rather good, but the black (midnight blue) frame was so so. Would much rather prefer a white/silver frame to go in living room (wife hates black plasticky tellies). The model is in stock available for delivery.

What neither the shop assistant or Sony customer service could tell me was whether the white/silver models (4030 and 4020) would be available in the UK in due course.

Does anyone have any insights ?

Many thanks

So far the only other one listed on the UK site is the 4050 which is Dark Walnut.

I must see one of these in the flesh, I was conviced I wanted a 40E4000 but the reports of looking cheap have deterred me a lot. I might play it safe (and cheaper) and go for a W.

I'm with you - I;d have thought white/silver or white/white would look better but obviously Sony thinks different
My guess is they are releasing to the UK in batches - first batch white/black , 2nd white/walnut. rest tba I suspect depending on sales of the first lot

The stand sizes are quoted as depth= 27.9cm for 40" and 24.2 for 32" so they can't be the same, can they? Please enlighten me if i got that wrong!

Good spot. I was actually referring to the width of the base on the W series (and I have to admit I only eyeballed this). But the 32W base is certainly proportionally larger in width than the 40 inch (this is still the W series I'm talking about). The two were sitting side by side in Selfridges.

Annoyingly, almost all the photos you see of the 32W4000 online (e.g. Amazon / Sony website) are *not* of this model. The actual base / proportions looks like that in the photo of the 32V4500 on Amazon. Have a look on Amazon and you'll see what I mean.
---
Back to the E series...

Now, I actually like really the base design of the E series - it is slim and elegant. But I find the overall cream colour of the TV and the dark boxy surround offensive and distracting (you have to see this in person - on brochure photos the E series looks fab!).

Perhaps I'm being over sensitive re: the TVs visual appeal (curse of studying Design at Uni), but I know this matters to some people, and I'm far from convinced.

I'd be interested to know what other other people think of the design...

Do you mean cream or just off-white?

There are new images on sony.co.uk and I see no sign of cream.

Any chance you could take a photo of one in the flesh?

I'll try and get a photo tomorrow night, to be a little more objective.

The colour is described in the Sony Tech Spec as 'pearly white'.

Re: New Sony KDL-E4000 Series Picture Frame(1080p,33.000:1 Contrast,Bravia Engine 2)

Just back from the Sony Centre on TCR to view the E Series (again). They now have 32" and 26" on display.

The main purpose of going back was to get a few photos of the 'pearly white' colour, but on each photo the colour looked completely different, due to the mixture of natural and artifical light in the showroom. But, the visit wasn't entirely wasted...

Some observations from round #2:

- After the initial shock of seeing the E Series (dark frame) for the first time, I have to say I appreciated it more the second time. I'd really like to see it with the other frame colours (which the salesperson confirmed they were getting in). It is still quite a bold design statement though, and I stand by my earlier comment that the 'pearly white' might be overly distracting at times.

- I'd describe the colour as off-white. It was really difficult to ascertain the level of yellow tint though, as the lights in the showroom cast a warm glow over everything (which is why I initially described the colour as cream ).

- Regardless, the colour isn't as 'fresh' (white) looking as the photos online.

- Interestingly the 26" has a completely different base design from the other sizes - it sits back (slightly angled) in a black cradle, which looks almost like a very miniture easel. The salesperson confirmed the base displayed was the actual base.

Hope that helps.

i went to my local Sony centre and saw the 32" and 26" too. The "white" part is like a mesh effect. its looks quite alright. want/need to see the 40".

I notice they have gone from the Sony Style online store now... Wonder what is going on - problems?

Its not just been de-listed on the Sony site, other stores had pages for the white models, including the silver framed one and the products vanished.
So loads of hype and they don't launch it afterall
