My current TV struggles on the Gears of War map called Bulletmarsh (not sure any of you are aware of it)

The only way I could explain it is that when there is loads of movement going on there are lines that appear almost as if someone has cut the picture.

I'm not sure whether it is that my TV cannot handle it due to only being 720p etc etc or whether it's a fault, I'd say it is the TV as my dad has a slightly newer model and does the same.

But that's not to do with this thread.

I've tried to go to places like Currys etc to see the TV but it's not set up good enough for my liking, they always have poor feed into the TV so can't really judge from a shop.
Hi,

This just sounds like screen tearing within the game itself to me, which you will get with certain games. Gears of War also uses the Unreal Engine, and apart from the texture pop in on this engine, you will notice screen tear now and again also.

To back up this comment...

Yep... unfortunately a lot of games have this now as they get rid of vertical sync so that there isn't any frame drop when the screen gets busy. It can almost look like the image is being cut in 2 briefly. Its not a fault with the TV it even does it on CRT. Its not pretty but neither is a choppy frame rate. Problems from source like this are highlighted even more on better TVs cos there doing there job well.

Hope this helps.

Also one more rant...

I saw the review on gadget show were it award the w4500 first place and the 46inch version of this set third place...

How could they compare image quality from a philips 40" Sony 40" and Samsung 46".... Of course the image is going to be slightly lower quality on a larger set? why didn't they pick the 40" model? (£200 cheaper and the same quality)... They said HD on all panels looked great yet.. The only bad point they made about the A656 was that the motion didn't look right with 100hz on... Turn it off perhaps?

Were the sets calibrated??? Straight out of the box the Samsung is pretty poor but after calibration its excellent. see the HDTVtest review...

For anyone put off or in doubt about buying an A656 here's my comment...

Ive had the set since May and its brilliant. (My previous set was a panasonic LZD85 which i sent back for bad clouding and poor visibility during dark scenes) Ive had no dead pixels or clouding the lag is minimal to non existent after the latest firmware upgrade. Yes the sound isn't very punchy but you need to run it through a surround sound set up or hifi to get the most out of it. The standard def viewing is also excellent.

It seems nowadays most commercial reviews back Sony straight away, all i will say is check the TV's out for yourself and go into the stores. 4 other people I know have gone for the samsung after viewing it compared with other sets. look at what the real experts say (HDTVtest) who test the sets down to the wire... They point out the positives and negatives in each review.

Anyway rant over...

Re: Samsung LE-A656 FULL HD 100Hz(50.000:1 CONTRAST,USB,6ms RESPONSE TIME)*FAQ 1st Po

Been trying to do the FW update and can't get it to work.

I've got the folder on a USB stick and when I do the "standby + power" part of the update the TV turns on and searches for USB devices and thats as far as it goes.

I left it for 5 mins and nothing else happened.

I'm only doing the update as I'm getting colour problems on darker scenes of movies.

Anyone have any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Many thanks in advance.

Nice detailed response there

My two pence worth! I have the LE40 A656 and my dad has the Sony KDL40 W4000 and they are both great TV's. We both have a PS3 and in HD you can't go wrong with either. However one thing he hates about the Sony is the breakup on Digital TV when the signal deteriorates. It is really noticeable and blocky and he has a great aerial, on the Samsung I think the Digital reception and PQ is on another level. Its personal taste but I think the A656 looks more stylish and classy and this was also one of the reasons for buying it along with all the top reviews including What High Def TV.

M8 read through the last 30 pages on this thread, explains you need to rename the file as you probably have Pearl firmware which means the Amber filename has to be renamed. All explained in previous posts.

Re: Samsung LE-A656 FULL HD 100Hz(50.000:1 CONTRAST,USB,6ms RESPONSE TIME)*FAQ 1st Po

Hi all,

I'm new with this set and have a question. I did a search but couldn't find anything relevant and I can't muster reading through some 500+ pages in this thread, so here it goes.

I'm experiensing som picture format issues when viewing over HDMI. It's almost as if the picture is stretched? I looks about the same as if You're viewing a 4:3 transmission stretched to fill 16:9? The HD set top box is outputting 1920x1080i@50Hz and the Picture Size on the TV is set to 16:9. I can see it "stretching" the picture the second it loads. I did not experience this on my old LG TV so I'm guessing it's not related to the HD set top box. Also, the issue is not present viewing SD material over scart, the picture size is perfect. Also, connecting my PC gives perfect picture.

Any ideas? This is really annoying..

Hi Carl

Welcome to the forum.

If you don't want the stretch from 4:3 to 16:9, change the picture option 'Screen Mode' from 16:9 to 4:3 on that particular input.

As this thread has become too big, and convoluted, it is closed, but discussion can be continued here, in the "Part 2" of it :
