Is this banding? Is it normal for an LCD tv?

Basically, you need to lookout for the smoothness of the gradient from greenish-blue to purple. If it has noticeable circles around where the colors mix, you may have a display that can't display true 8bit or has some errors in processing.

I saw these ads for the first time last night and got this banding effect. It is a shame that the reviewers out there could not use the eizo tool as part of their normal tests.

I'm pretty sure that's just compression causing the posterisation there.
