SONY 24p True Cinema - What is it??

Hey,

I'm trying to find out what exactly the SONY 24p True Cinema feature does, specifically on the new Bravia V3000 series.

The SONY web site states:
Quote:
24p True Cinema
This mode allows films to be watched as intended by the director for the big screen, at 24 frames per second. Until now, movies watched at home play back 'faster' than they do in the cinema. When a film is shown on TV or sold on DVD it has to be adjusted to be compatible with the PAL format. The difference is that films are shot at a rate of 24 frames per second, whereas standard TV uses 25 frames per second.
Sounds good so far but what this doesn't say it's whether it's applying 3:2 pulldown or showing real 24p.

The X series says it's 120Hz thus can perform 5/5 pulldown. I've not seen anything that says the refresh rates on the V series can handle 24/48/72/120Hz therefore I'm less inclined to believe it's real 24p.

Now in the discussion V3000 thread someone says it is real 24p, however on AVS people are saying it's 3:2 (albeit the US model is different).

So if I can find out what 24p True Cinema actually does - then that will help my decision on whether to upgrade or not.

Cheers.

Re: SONY 24p True Cinema - What is it??

According to hdtvtest.co.uk sony 24p works as good as with pioneer plasmas or sammy f86 or m86. So i don't think there is 3:2 pull down. Whether it is 24Hz or some multiple of that , does not really mater with lcd technology.(with emissive tecnology like plasmas or rtptvs 24Hz might cause flicker)
True cinema seems to work right at least with eu models x3500,x3000 and w3000. It would be very strange if they had balls to claim 24Hz support for v3000 if there is not any, despite x and w supports it.

So 24 Hz support can be done without 5:5; You just need 24Hz timing circuit for the job.

Re: SONY 24p True Cinema - What is it??

The reviews of Sony TVs with True Cinema (though not seen a V series one yet) have shown that it reproduces judder free 24fps playback which means it can't be doing 3:2 pulldown.

Since this and the W series are 50/60Hz sets, I would guess it's doing 2:2 pulldown giving 48Hz on-screen. It's a shame none of the manufacturers are very clear on this issue...the only TV I've seen advertised with an actual pulldown ratio for 24p is the Toshiba Z series that does 5:5 pulldown. (Although since LCDs are sample-and-hold type displays it's effecively the same as 2:2 pulldown)

Yes it does. We have an M87 fed from a PS3 here at work and it looks fabulous on 24P Blu-ray discs. If you turn off 24P mode, you can definitely see 3:2 pulldown judder.

Yes it works on forced 24Hz playback with ps3 and newer TVs with new firmware work also with players that do not allow forced playback.
Go and see M86/7 thread for more info.

Re: SONY 24p True Cinema - What is it??

People incorrectly refer to True Cinema Mode as the mode movie directors “intended” customers to watch their movies. Not true. 24 frames per seconds has nothing extraordinary to it. IT IS ONLY ANOTHER GIMMICK FROM MANUFACTURERS to pretend that their product displays movies “closer” to what you see at the theaters. You will not notice a difference if you have a TV with 24fps. Directors film at 24 fps not because it is better but because IT IS A STANDARD in film industry. The only things that matter when buying a big TV is, size (of course), resolution 1080p and refresh rate which MUST be 120Hz for better display of fast moving scenes, and at least three HDMI inputs. The rest of the features are bells and whistles that don’t add much to the viewing experience but will add lots of $$$ to the price. Good luck.

Re: SONY 24p True Cinema - What is it??

Mr.'TechGuru is an embarrassment to all av forums. Does he pull rabbits out of his hat too??
24 P is 1 of the biggest advantages us videophiles have managed to acquire since the advent of crt, then vhs i guess then laser disk an dvd also but most importantly progressive scanning.
Please Mr.NoTechGuru, explain ur words in why 24 P is such a gimmick?? is it because its the same frame rate as film?? & that we have the sound synced aswell?? As in 24 fps pics and sound?? w0w u ever heard a pal and ntsc copy of the same movie side by side?? ntsc is woefully higher pitched then pal, yet this gimmicked 24 p has the exact same playback of sound as film, funny that....sorry have i confused u?? i know others on here know what im on about, shame some1 like u, who thinks us gimmicked gimmozers don't.

Chow 4 now snapper head!!!

Re: SONY 24p True Cinema - What is it??

I was very happy when I purchased my sony TV with 24P.
To my amazement though it doesn't really work...
At least for me.
The model in question is the 32W4000.
The stuttering I get in some scenes is unbelievable!
Any ideas why this happens?
The PS3 which is connected to the TV has the 24p mode enabled.

Hi

Reading between the lines I quite understand what you are trying to say.

You are right in saying 24 fps is a standard in the film industry, no more and no less, and has been for many, many, many years.

I also agree with what you say about modern TVs. Strip out the BS enhancements and just deal with the fundamentals. Quite right.

Manufacturers have to come out with 'features' to sell their new sets. What else would they put on all those stickers that surround the screen ? Of course there are the occasional real breakthroughs in development but many 'add-ons' actually add very little. In some cases they clash against one another.

People clamour for new models that boast something that is 'true','deep','real','super','enhanced' etc etc. Later on when ideal 'settings' are discussed it is often the case that all, or most of the these jollys are either better switched off or turned to minimum. How useful are they then ?

I'm not aiming at anything particularly related to 24fps. Actually in the cinema every frame is shown twice so it is really 48fps to minimise flicker.

I don't disagree with what he had to say, just that he bumped a year and a half old thread which he would have had to search for to find just to try and display his wisdom, smacks of despiration thats all, and bumping old old threads is dumb.

How very true... Perhaps some old threads should be 'pruned' from time to time.
