Question Philips 42PFL5522

Picked up one of these at the weekend. Was trying to convince the wife into spending a little more to get a 1080p set for "future proofing"

Anyway I got it home, read a bit of the manual, said that it supports up to 1080i via HDIM, ok I thought, probably won't notice the difference ona 42" tv anyway.

But!

When I hooked up my PS3 via HDMI and set it to autodetect the best settings it picked 1080p surley this is wrong? Running games at 1080p (RR&) is amazing

Anyone else noticed this? is it 1080p compatible? or should I downgrade it to 720p? I won't damage my TV running at 1080p will I?

P.S - Cracking TV, very very very impressed! No blur, ghosting or anything, performs like a trooper in SD too.

Re: Philips 42PFL5522

No, its not, according to the philips site you linked to. But it will accept a 1080p signal and then downscale it to the panels native resolution.

Re: Philips 42PFL5522

So technically is it better to run at 1080p and let it downscale or run at 720p?

Try both, see what you like the look of best and stick with it. Dont get too wrapped up in the technicalities. Only you can decide what you prefer.

Re: Philips 42PFL5522

Hi sorry to hijack your thread, hope you dont mind.

I bought 1 of these from currys yesterday and I have to say it is a cracking set, but 1 thing I did notice is that when the screen is black you can see the backlight shining through the corners of the screen, well 3 corners, so instead of it being pure black the corners are a light black.
When a picture is showing the picture is perfect, Should I be worried about this, or is it normal to have some light showing through.

Thanks for any advice

Pete

Re: Philips 42PFL5522

Has anyone seen a review for this set yet?
I've seen it in CostCo for £740 and am thinking of buying it but would like to read some reviews before I do.

Re: Philips 42PFL5522

So can anyone with this set take some pictures of it in action, and give some more indepth comments?

I am particularly interested in it for its capacity of a high definition gaming teleivision to reduce blur and imaging problems with my current Dell tv at 16ms response.

Anyone here got an xbox 360 or ps3 hooked up to it who can share their gaming experiences?
I saw this tv on display in comet today however its ran off a weak signal from an aerial by the looks so its impossible to judge the picture quality accurately
Many thanks for anyone who can offer thoughts / advice / pictures.

Re: Philips 42PFL5522

My xbox 360 looks great on this set, only slight weird thing is when i'm on the xbox dashboard it occasionally switches itself into 'movie expand' mode or similar, any ideas? Is it because i bought a cheap component lead off ebay for it?

Re: Philips 42PFL5522

Help someone!
Its a tossup for me between this philips set and the SAMSUNG PS42Q97HDX

Main use will be for gaming and watching dvds upscaled.

Am looking to reduce motion blur and get a good picture.
The philips looks nice and has the 5ms response, however reviews state that the samsung also handles motion well.
Looking around it seems people are having issues with lines appearing on the samsung, and it has a lower resolution than the philips panel.

Can anyone offer me some advice?
I've managed to get the Philips down to 709 for collection at my local store, but would like some feedback on how well it handles motion and how good the picture quality is.

Advice ASAP would be appreciated by any forum member

Re: Philips 42PFL5522

Its a cracking set, I do have some issues though, the manual says the highest resolution on a pc is 1024 x 768, I was hoping to use the native resolution of 1366, it will accept a higher resolution but the text starts looking funny, any ideas of a way to get around this. (Maybe theres a setting or a driver that I dont know about).
Also on the pc if you have got a bright red text on a gray background, the red bleeds into the gray. (which may happen on other LCDs, I`m a novice and dont really know much about LCD`s but I`m learning )

Other than the above I`m very happy with it

Anybody been able to register it online for the guarrentee??

PS looks awesome playing test drive unlimited on the PC, Playing DVD`s from the PC looks awesome too

Cheers

Pete

Re: Philips 42PFL5522

Thanks guys who have replied so far, how do you find it handles motion in particular?

I play test drive unlimited on the xbox 360 and i find it a nightmare at the moment as my current tv has 16ms response and it consistently blurs, particularly when scrolling the island map, and panning the camera around the car and when travelling at fast speed..

I take it the philips with 5ms response is very good at handling motion?
How do you feel the picture quality is? Any better / worse than other lcd's you've seen?

Finally, what kind of settings are there to play with , can you adjust the backlight, and turn stuff like pixel plus etc on and off?

Many thanks, you're certainly making such a hard decision much easier

Re: Philips 42PFL5522

I see no motion blur at all, the picture is stunning, colours are vibrant and the picture is sharp.
As far as I can tell you can`t adjust the backlight, you can turn the pixel plus on and off, but not when your watching via hdmi, It will only let you adjust contrast, brightness, and colour temp.
Via the freeview, scart etc, you can adjust the picture settings, soft, natural, rich etc. also via scart and hdmi you can change the aspect ratio, it gives you a good list.
Have a look on the philips website you can download the manual and have a scan to see the specs and what settings you can mess with

Hope that helps

Pete

Re: Philips 42PFL5522

Well I bought this set today and have it all rigged up to my xbox 360 and ps3 and, I am very pleased with the picture quality however..

Some kind of frame rate capping appears to be in effect unless it is just my eyes, but in Gears of War it appears the game is running so much slower than it used to on my Dell LCD Television with a 16ms response.

It is so strange, when playing online it feels like im playing a completely different game, switching weapons - to shooting people, everything is slower. So much so, enemies come up to me and kill me as i believe I am virtually shooting them still, then im suddenly dead. Its like being on drugs :/ And a similar effect appears to be occuring with dvds form the ps3 .
Have to agree SD quality is very good, has done wonderful things with my Virgin Media Set Top Box.

Anybody got any idea whats going on here with my games consoles and dvds? Its as if the frame rate is being capped before it hits the tv!

Re: Philips 42PFL5522

Hi Have you been able to sort it out??? Just 1 experience I had with dvds playing a bit funny through the pc, was as if a frame was missing every so often, making the viewing jerky, but I changed the refresh rate from 85 hertz to 60 hertz and it solved the problem, can you change the refresh rate on your 360 and ps3??

Hope you get it working

Re: Philips 42PFL5522

Hi All,

I have clocked this TV in my local store, Inwhich is looks stunning , picture looks sharp & colours look good I think the source material running is from a DVD.

Can I get feedback ON viewing S/D via internal digital tuner.

Cheers

Re: Philips 42PFL5522

Performance viewing internal tuner is great IMO the noise reduction works really well, and although the physical screen size is bigger, the picture is much clearer than my 37 inch dell tv.
Pixel Plus and the noise reduction / other tv features really do help with freeview Cant fault it.

Wish I could get used to / sort out the strange frame rate issues I'm having though with this tv via my 360 over component!

Re: Philips 42PFL5522

Hi there. i have a 47PFL5522D also. Have been playing with my XBOX360 and PS3 with no problems as what you have described.

My XBOX360 is connected to the TV via Component set @ 1080i (how you get 1080p via component? i don't find this setting in XBOX360). I've been playing PGR3 and i do not exeprience the choppy video as you have described.

My PS3 is connected to the TV via HDMI set @ 1080p. I've been playing Ridge Racer 7 and Genji(720P) also without the choppy video problem also.

Could you tell me your set up so that i can try? Thanks.

Re: Philips 42PFL5522

Now that a few people on here have bought one, How do you find the screen, when just displaying black??

The problem I have is that after a around 2-3 hours of viewing the backlight starts showing through on the top left and bottom left corners. Do others find this to happen? or is mine faulty? It doesn`t really bother me too much but I know its there and if it is faulty I need to take it back ASAP before the 28days are up and get a replacement.

Thanks for any advice

Re: Philips 42PFL5522

Just a update,

I took the LCD back to currys last Saturday, I told them that it had excessive backlight bleed. They told me that they would need to see the backlight bleed before replacing it, So I left it there playing a dvd for 3hrs, (because the backlight doesnt show through until its been on for a few hours). So I went back and no backlight was showing through at all. So I took it home and now its perfect. How strange is that??

At least its working perfectly now.

How do you activate the guarrentee??

I`ve been on there website and can`t findout how to do it

Thanks

Pete

Re: Philips 42PFL5522

Got mine set up yesterday, and WOW.
SD looks very watchable and Freeview is fabulous. the first thing I watched was the wildlife thing on BBC2 with shots of fish underwater. It even blew the wife away.
Next door has bought one too, and the guy 2 doors down is getting one tomorrow.
If it proves reliable I'll be really happy. But got a 5 year guarantee for £80 from RS so I reckon I'll be OK.
