Freeview works fine on my M87. Around 90 channels found if I remember correctly.

I was quite suprised by the quality of the DTV tuner actually - I did a direct comparison to Sky SD and they were very close indeed.

Now people may think I'm nuts, but it's something I'm sure all of us have avoided, and that is calibrating whilst in Dynamic Mode, yes you heard it correctly....DYNAMIC

I find that it works wonders for SD material, so here you go:

Picture
Mode: Dynamic
Contrast: 65
Brightness: 57
Sharpness: 15
Colour: 50
Colour Tone: Normal
Backlight: 4
Size: 16:9
Digital NR: Off
Active Colour: On
DNie: On
Movie Plus: Off

-----------------------

Setup
Energy Saving: Medium

Everything else Off here

-----------------------

Now if you still find things a little bright, turn off DNie and that will dim things a bit, or set Energy Saving to High.

I find the above settings to be my best yet for Sky SD.

Good Luck

What channels have you been watching to analyse ?

You mention to turn off DNie but you have this off already !

Have you watched any movies, football etc ?

Cheers and keep em coming I don't have the time to mess unfortunately.

Re: Samsung LEM86/7 thread

I'm not going to put a full review together, just a few positives and negatives from my own experience:

Positives
+ SD picture quality is more than acceptable at normal viewing distances (greater than around 6 feet away).
+ Glossy screen produces stunning colour and contrast.
+ Xbox 360 games are stunning via 1080p Component (I don't notice any overscan personally).
+ No discernable motion blur when playing Xbox 360 (as far as I can tell).
+ Football looks very good for an LCD panel. Motion blur is hardly noticable. Grass does not smear either.
+ PC looks fantastic over 1080p VGA.
+ Freeview picture quality, reception and EPG are very good.
+ The 40" model is perfectly sized for my lounge (20'x14'). Not too big, not overpowering.

Fixable Negatives
- Xbox 360 1080p via VGA currently unavailable (hopefully will be fixed by Samsung firmware update or MS dashboard update coming in May 2007).
- Movie Plus switches itself on each time the screen changes display format. i.e. if you are watching Sky One in 16:9 and a 4:3 advert comes on, Movie Plus will switch itself on (even though it appears Off in the menu). A tad annoying at the moment, but can be easily fixed by firmware update.

Permanent Negatives
- Sometimes the blacks are TOO black meaning shadow detail suffers.
- Dust magnet!

Movie Plus - Possible Temporary Fix

I have come up with a temporary solution to the Movie Plus problem if anyone's interested. I noticed that in the Zoom or Wide Zoom display modes Movie Plus is disabled. So... simply change the display format to Zoom instead of 16:9. Use the options beside the Zoom setting to squeeze the picture vertically all the way - it will be in exact 16:9 format when squeezed fully. Bob's yer uncle!

The only downside to this is that if a 4:3 formatted channel or program comes on it will look very strange. Still, most TV these days is created in 16:9 format so it's worth a punt.

Good thread this onkeh .... particularly like the FAQ, will hopefully stop those repeated questions, especially if it is kept updated as new info becomes available.

Just a couple of suggestions I have for adding to the FAQ.

On the point above, I would say that as long as people don't have a strong light source e.g. lamp, window etc directly in front of the television they should be ok.

Also there was an email address posted for MS and the related What HiFi review comments here:

http://www.avforums.com/forums/showt...22#post4672622

Might be worth adding too.

Good work though.

Anyone notice faint horizontal lines waving through the screen on Sky SD via RGB?

It's very faint, but still catches your eye.

Also, does the guarantee card you receive in the box have to be sent back to the place you bought it to have it stamped and dated, or will receipt of purchase do as proof?

question about Movie plus

Can Movie plus be used with 60Hz content to calculate extra interpolation frame to create 120Hz picture?

If answer is yes: Is Movie plus same as "100/120Hz technology"?

I ask because i liked my friend´s 100/120Hz(non fullhd jvc) lcd to play video games. It somehow makes smooter motion with games.

LOL!!
I had this problem and it was on my third attempt that the set picked up and stored the DTV channels.

The FAQ can be updated - I've had my PS3 plugged into all 3 HDMI sockets on my LE40M87 and had 1:1 pixel mapping in all cases.

Re: Samsung LEM86/7 thread

Great idea starting this new thread ....

Can anyone with an M86 or M87 please let us know how much of a problem the Movie Plus issue is?

How noticable is it in everyday use, and when/how do you see it?

Don't you get very irritated having to turn it back off constantly?

This is the only thing that is stopping me buying this TV (well that and the fact that nobody has it in stock anymore!!)

i did notice this.. they are very faint and they move upwards.. only notice it sometimes (light scenery maybe?)

is this the set being faulty or just the way it is, as it's SD?

i only noticed it on the left half of the TV though.. or maybe that was me..

Re: Samsung LEM86/7 thread

How exactly does the screen react when Movie Plus is enabled?

I really can't see any problem with mine. I can turn off, it stays off, and turn on, it stays on.....

If it's turning itself on, I really can't see any screen reaction if so....

I think it improves the longer the set is on, and is barely noticeable though.

It's probably just interference of some sort related to SD because it's not there on component input.

I'm sure you probably know this already but the guys over at HDTVtest were the first to report this problem. They've emailed Samsung and are awaiting a reply.

On their set even if it said Movie Plus was disabled in the menu it would auto re-enable itself when either:

1) The source was changed e.g. moving from Sky to PS3 to upscaled DVD etc.

or

2) The screen resolution was changed

Obviously often both of these happen at the same time.

They would then have to go to the menu, turn it on and back off again.

I'm sure this can be easily sorted by Samsung firnware upgrade, it's just a case of when they get round to it.

It'll happen a lot quicker if owners email them requesting an immediate fix.

Re: Samsung LEM86/7 thread

To all M86/87 owners.

Can any of you actually notice the 2.5% overscan through component when playing the 360, say on GOW??

Can anyone actually notice that it is not 1:1 pixel mapped on this input??

Basically, do you actually 'lose out' on any visual quality due to it not being 1:1?

Pleeeeeease let me know as this will be the clincher as to whether or not I buy one of these lcds.

Ta.

I have played the 360 on it but I haven't a clue what 2.5% overscan even is so I cannot comment lol.

Maybe it's best I don't know

Is it such a big deal anyway?

The 360 elite will be out soon and not overly priced, so that should resolve the issue if you intend to buy one.

Thanks for the reply.

With the overscan, say on GOW, do you notice if any of the edges of the picture is missing? 2.5% overscan indicates that part of the picture is missing around the edges (afaik).

How sharp is the picture/text in GOW through component?

I'll check again tonight, but as far as I can remember no picture was missing, it was all full screen.

The picture and text is very sharp.

Initially I didn't see much of a difference between it through component and my Old CRT (through Monster RGB scart), but after using the settings provided my mightymaccers, I saw a big difference. The settings he provided were for PS3 HDMI, but I tried them with the 360 through component and they work great. The colour and detail is fantastic.

I'll check later about the oversan issue and post back, unless someone replies before me.

Is there any way you can move your aerial around while you're in that screen, or is it on the roof? Mines an indoor aerial and I manage to get the bit error to zero and the signal to 90 by moving it around. Did you get freeview on your old TV OK?

aerial is on the roof.. no way i'm going up there.. lol!!

i've never had freeview - always had sky.. so it's my first time!!

I just thought it was weird that it scanned first time yesterday and found about 15 channels and some radio stations, and then later in the evening onwards, it's not picking up any signals..

Just not sure if it is the aerial, as its worked before.. i dunno..

The terrestrial TV reception has always and still is fine.

Have you checked your postcode on the freeview website? if you should get it then you'll need to upgrade your aerial, or get some kind of booster.

Anyone know who mightymaccers friend was ?
If they had their set pro calibrated can they give us their settings for SD TV, Freeview, HDMI, VGA and Component as that would be the best solution.

from freeview.co.uk:
"Great news, your home can see the whole family of Freeview channels."

i just don't get why it worked but now doesn't work..
if it didn't work from the outset, then i'd understand about the aerial stuff..
