Samsung UE40ES6710 Dolby Digital Problem

Hi, just got my new TV which is great but I have this intermittent problem with the Dolby Digital output on Freeview HD channels.

Basically I use the TV's Optical Output to feed my AV receiver, and when viewing Freeview HD channels I get occasional sound dropouts which seem to coincide with the AV Receiver losing the Dolby Digital signal.

This doesn't happen on Freeview SD channels (but then they don't have Dolby Digital) and also doesn't happen when viewing a Blu Ray or DVD with Dolby Digital.

Anyone got this TV and having the same issue or anyone else had this issue on other TVs ?

Presumably it's a problem with the broadcasts, not the TV or the amplifier.

I've just posted on the ES6300 thread about what appears to be the same problem.
I have a UE37ES6300 and get sound dropouts when using the optical output. It only happens on HD channels when the picture changes scene.
I noticed it first while watching a Euro 2012 match on ITV 1 HD and when the graphics are flashed on screen the sound dropped out for about half a second, maybe a little less, but enough to be annoying. The sound from the TV speakers carries on as normal.

The problem is even worse when there's a lot of camera angle changes in a program, and is particularlty noticeable during adverts.

I've tried all Freeview HD channels and the problem is the same. I've not heard it happen on SD.
I've also tried changing the audio settings (and turning off all the video enhancements) but nothing makes a difference.

Can anybody confirm that they are NOT getting this problem or is it all ES TVs?

I don't see how this can be a Freeview problem. The sound from the TV speakers continues as normal.
Also, I've never noticed audio dropouts using any other Freeview HD boxes. (Although I've never tried them through an optical out. I will try my Humax Fox HD box's optical connection).

The Humax box works perfectly. The volume level is also better as it is very quiet when coming through the TV's optical out.

Good to hear I'm not the only one, I'm going to raise a fault with Samsung Support and see what they say.

I have exactly the same fault, just switched it over to BBC One HD for the Spain vs Portugal Penalty Shootout and everytime a penalty was taken and that big Flower with a Football head graphic thing flashed on the screen, bingo the sound dropped out.

Thanks for checking Spiffo.
I sent a message to Samsung, they replied:
'I would recommend changing the output options from the optical connection on your television.
Please use the instructions below to do this.
Menu → Sound → Additional Settings
SPDIF OUTPUT
I would recommend changing the output to bitstream from PCM.
This should help your situation.'

This didn't help me as I just got a 'No Signal' message from my stereo when I selected Dolby Digital. I've got an Aiwa system that is about 10 years old so I don't think it does DD, maybe it will help other people out. Let me know if it works. (I want to buy a 5.1 system but will be really annoyed if the problem still persists with the new kit).

I've got a UE46ES5500 and I've been experiencing exactly the same issue since I got it. It seems to affect all Freeview HD channels. I've tried audio through ARC and optical and there's absolutely no difference. As mentioned above it tends to happen when there are studio graphics played (such as the flower in the Euros). I have a feeling this is to do with automatic switching between 1080i and 1080p. If you hit the info button when they're playing football it seems to be in 1080i then when the replays happen it seems to switch to 1080p which is when he sound goes. I've checked and it's the same on other channels when the sound drops out, the image changes in some way (camera angles, studio images etc.) along with the resolution.

This is strange as there is lots about this issue in forums from roughly a year ago when BBC started testing this kind of switching. However, we're a year on a it now seems that all HD channels are doing this and once again tvs can't handle it. I'm fairly sure that this must be the issue. Anyone else noticed this?

I've just checked, this is exactly what's happening on my TV.

AFAIK there's no 1080p on UK broadcast TV.

There's another post on this forum discussing the automatic switching of HD Freeview channels:

All Freeview HD channels now using 1080i/1080p GOP switching?

If you do a google search for '1080i 1080p BBC HD' you'll get a lot back including all of the issues that tv manufacturers had with it in the first place. I just hope that Samsung can resolve this with a firmware update otherwise the tv might have to go back as I'm not watching the HD Freeview channels at the moment because of this issue.

I raised this issue with Samsung and have since received a response from them saying that they released firmware version T-MST10PDEUC-1022.2, on Friday, and that this should resolve this issue. I'm going to give it a try tonight and I'll let you know how I get on.

Wishful thinking that this would have resolved it so soon after bringing it to Samsung's attention. Upgraded to the new firmware and it doesn't seem to have made one bit of difference.

Well guess what, I pressed the Info Button and sure enough everytime the picture goes from 1080i to 1080p or vice versa the Dolby Digital signal disappears for a split second.

I've raised a query with samung and am currently in discussion with them, I've just told them I think this is a long standing issue, we'll see what they say.

Good luck with that. do let us know what they say.

I'm also in a conversation with them, although I don't seem to be getting very far. They're blaming it on the Freeview broadcasters claiming that the tv is absolutely fine.

According to Samsung, if your 2012 tv with a built in HD Freeview tuner doesn't work properly with every single national HD Freeview channel then it's obviously BBC, ITV and Channel 4's problem and not theirs!! Funny how (seemingly) all other tv manufacturers don't have this problem. Oh, and when Sony did have this problem in 2011 they produced and deployed a firmware update within a couple of weeks.

Today I received this response from Samsung:

Thank you for contacting Samsung.
I am sorry you are having this issue with sound on HD channels. I
understand that this can be frustrating when trying to enjoy your
favourite HD channels.
Unfortunately this seems to be an issue with what the TV is picking up
from the broadcast. Our engineers are currently developing software to
rectify this issue.
We have no information as to when this will be made available. I advise
that you regularly check your firmware to keep it up to date so this
issue will be resolved.
I apologise for any inconvenience caused and than you for your patience
in this matter.

So, it looks as if they are aware there is a problem, but they don't know when they'll fix it and they are kinda blaiming the broadcasters.

Watch this space !

I seem to have the same problem. I started this thread (http://www.avforums.com/forums/tvs/1...io-glitch.html). If Samsung doesn't do something about it soon then I have to consider getting a refund on my TV.

Looks as though Samsung have released a new firmware upgrade (T-MST10PDEUC-1025.2). I'm at work so won't be able to test it until I get home tonight. As usual there don't seem to be any release notes so I'm not even sure whether it's supposed to fix this issue or not.

If anyone else gets a chance to test it out today, let us know whether it makes any difference.

I just upgraded to 1025 (had to use USB stick as online method didn't find it) but unfortunately the sound problem (BBC One HD) is still there

For most of us the 1029 firmware fixed it - see Samsung TVs: HD 1080i/p change causes audio glitch

I have had no issues on my TV since the update. The latest for my TV is now 1031 but since Samsung don't provide release notes I don't know why I should need to update again, and I'm not going to take the risk that there might be a regression.
