4:3 MKV only on Samsung LCD

I have all my DVD's ripped and play them on my Samsung LCD using a media player. Everything is OK.
I wanted to try and see if the MKV's work OK on the USB so that I can test my sons TV (similar to mine).
I copies an episode of BoB 3Gb. on to a pen drive and it does indeed work both as MKV and avi (if I rename), but it only works in 4:3 although it's recorded 16:9. The TV's ability to resize is not available in Media Player status.
Why does the TV not play in widescreen please.

Just renaming the file to .avi doesn't make it a avi. Your tv is smart enough to ignore and keep playing though.

You mediainfo (its free software) to check the resolution and aspect ratio of the files your playing.
