Just seen this thread so adding my £0.02

LD790, wired ethernet, Netgear DG834 and I'll let you guess which ISP.

Everything ok for 10 mins, then buffering every few seconds. No problems on my laptop.

Can't wait for my contract to be up, then I'm off to Sky broadband.

Please Fireflye and rotter82 you need to add your problems over on to the talktalk forum where they have set up a sticky to collect info on this. It is getting noticed. Forum here.
rotter82 - never phone talktalk, just use their forum which is run by proper talktalk tec guys and gals who get things done.
As well as the sticky about this problem you need to add your problem on to the Broadband support section where it will be answered by talktalk staff (UK) after a few days -do not add to your post as that will push it down the list for an answer.

Also its confirmed its not just our LGs someone on there has a Sony

It may well be tv related but only if you also have talktalk here we have a sony blur ray smart that has problems on talktalk but not virgin
Here is the post from the iplayer sticky
Here are my dets1 TalkTalk package type :LLU (adsl) 2)
Router/Modem type and firmware huawei hg5323)
Download speed on TT speedtester: 12mbps4)
Equipment on which you have the issue Sony BDP370 Bluray player5)
Wired or wireless: Wired6)
BRIEF description of issue: since the first week of March2012 the bbc iplayer plays fine for 10mins and then freezes, buffers for a mintue, freezes again forever. Never encounterd this problem before. "Tested Sony player at parents home and BBc iplayer works fine on a Virgin line." So its NOT the sony player

Hi,

TalkTalk support have confirmed (via my support thread) that they are now investigating this issue. Hopefully it will be a positive outcome. I'd encourage anyone with the issue to still log it in this sticky until they come back with solution or at least a position on if the fault is caused by the talktalk network.

Yep I too have the same answer on the talktalk forum.
Everyone needs to add their info as phinw says otherwise it may get pushed to one side.
Apart from our issues the talktalk forum is by far the best place if you have any talktalk problems.

One of the frustrating things is that lg do not support the player as it is a 3rd party app. --Fine so dont advertise the iplayer on the box.

Here is my responce from LG

As the BBC Iplayer App is 3rd party software we are unable to offer support on the product im afraid, I would recommend contact BBC Iplayer support.

We hope this helps, should you require further assistance please do not hesitate to ask, you can contact us on the number below, via email or through our live chat facility Monday - Friday, 9am - 6pm.

Best regards,

James

Yes, I had the same reply from LG. It is a frustrating cop-out because they seem to be dodging the bullet on the basis this is a 3rd party app installed by the user. In reality it is a 3rd party app put on the tv by the manufacturer that cannot be updated by the user, only by LG themselves. They should at the very least show some interest in that fact that a feature they have used to market a product (which is still on sale) is now broken.

Here also is my reply (2nd one ) from BBC

Quote:
Thank you for contacting the BBC iPlayer Support Team.

We understand that you are having trouble watching programmes on BBC iPlayer due to buffering.

We are not aware of any problems at our end that might cause this and would suggest you make sure you have a direct internet connection rather than wifi.

You should also try resetting all your equipment including the router by switching off for a few minutes before switching back on.

If this doesn’t help then please let us know the details of the model of your television or Blu ray device so we can investigate further.

Once again, thank you for contacting us.

Kind Regards

Looks like we may getting some where as this issue is now on the BBC iplayer help site. Lets hope this can get sorted thanks to all on here who would not let it go.
Talktalk are also looking into it, lets hope that it is not an LG issue otherwise we are stuffed

I now have this from BBC

Thank you for contacting the BBC iPlayer Support Team.
I understand that you’ve been experiencing difficulties with the playback of the BBC iPlayer service on your LG television.

There’s an FAQ available, that may be able to assist you further, and you can access it at:

BBC iPlayer - Help - LG Smart TVs

I also acknowledge that you feel quite strongly about this issue and I'd like to assure you that I've fully registered your concerns. This will be included on feedback reports that are available to personnel responsible for maintaining and improving the BBC iPlayer service.

These reports are viewed as important documents that can help shape decisions on future aspects of BBC iPlayer.

Once again, thanks for taking the time to contact us.

Kind Regards

Well the FAQ gives little help at the moment, just a little bit of hope that the BBC are investigating - all gone a bit quiet on this and other forums - guess everyone is awaiting a response from the BBC and TalkTalk - hopefully we will have some positive news soon as I would like to get this working.

I have started to look at alternatives for getting iplayer through the TV, a cheap option is this set top box sold by Play, the i-Can Easy HD 2851T for £30

I have also thought about waiting for the You View boxes to become available.

As time goes by, more people will gradually drift to other devices to watch iPlayer on their tv's, this problem will be forgotten about. This will suit TT,BBC and LG as they will not have to deal with it. I honestly don't believe this has been taken seriously by these organisations, I am sure the solution would be relatively simply but I fear the issue will be sitting in some technicians in tray with more perceived pressing actions being dealt with than this. I hope it will get sorted out but everyone on this thread will eventually move to some other technology to watch iPlayer.

The talktalk forum collecting info sticky on this is getting quite a lot of entry's now --- please join the talktalk forum and add your info to the sticky (only if you have tt as your isp though as no other isp has this problem) -- I think talktalk systems wrongly "sees" the iplayer as some sort of file share and cuts the bandwidth causing the iplayer to buffer as it can no longer keep up with you watching

You could be right but for this to be the case, I think TT would need to be able to detect a difference between an iPlayer program being streamed to TVs (LG 42LE5900 and LG 32LE5900 in my case) on a home network, on which the 'buffering' problem is experienced, and one being streamed to a PC on the same home network which, in my experience, streams fine.

Perhaps someone who knows much more about this than I do would like to comment?

Maybe as the tv has a small amount of memory against that of a pc it has to download faster to keep up with the viewing and triggers talktalks throttling

I don't think it's a case of the TV having to download faster. Rather, if the streamed packets are arriving faster than the TV can handle, I would have thought it would have to send back to the streamer at BBC iPlayer a request to 'slow down'. If the streamer ignores these requests and keeps streaming at the same rate, perhaps TT's kit is detecting the high rate of these 'slowdown requests' as a problem and throttling the line.

If something like this is the case, and as the problem seems specific to TT, I would have thought the quick solution would be for TT to either stop throttling the line or throttle it gradually until the rate of these 'slow down' requests diminishing significantly. However the long-term solution would be for the streamer to respond to the 'slow down' requests by tuning the rate of streaming to fit the current conditions.

You're right. An internet search shows that many users on other ISPs are experiencing this problem.

You say a software upgrade is coming soon but don't say to what. Is this an upgrade to the software in your TV (what make and model do you have with this problem?) or to BBC iPlayer?

with 5.12.02 i tested BBC iPlayer and seen Dr.Who for now, works quite fine again. at least this release got it working again. and even DLNA seems to be active all the time now

but seems not many can download the update yet. but worth waiting for just for those 2 topics alone, if i am right on both counts here.

So what's all this about a new version? How do you check what version you already have? Are you talking about NetCast or iPlayer on NetCast?

I'm:
  • Talk Talk
  • Wired Connection
  • LG TV
  • Unwatchable after a short period on TV, Works ok on pc. Grrrrr!

On my LG TVs (xxLE5900), using the remote, press Menu then the Red button (Customer Support), tick Software Update then OK. This will tell you what software level is currently loaded and give you an option to check for updates. Hope this helps.

I noticed yesterday on Televisions: Compare LG TVs and HD Televisions | LG UK (you may have to register) that the latest level for my TVs is 03.21.62 released 05/02/2012) whereas my TVs were on 03.20.89. Have now updated both (read the Software Upgrade Guide) to the latest level but the buffering problem persists.

When will they ever get this fixed?
