Yup that is the halo effect and no it doesn't bother me one bit! The overall picture quality more than makes up for it

Co-sign. I had a Philips, followed by several (in my eyes) faulty Samsung D7000's, followed by several green blobbed Panasonic VT30's over the last 2 years and now owning the 55HX920 for 9 months or so and never been more happy with a TV.

What's the sound like with this TV?

I would not expect a really bassy sound, but is it mellow and clear enough?

Thanks.

IMO, it's perfectly clear, but not particularly rich or special in anyway. The speakers do the job.

Well, guess what, I finally came around to order a 65HX923 today, which hopefully will be delivered this week. With IFA 2012 now in the 30 day window it felt safe even though the HX95X might be released then. If it turns out Sony will release a TV twice as good for half the price, I still have a chance to upgrade

I must admit it was a tough choice between this one and the VT50, made even harder by the fact that this is a 2011 model, which doesn't make it any less good, but still. Never the less, it was hard to ignore the extra "pop" this has in the image compared to the VT50, besides not having to worry about IR, burn in, power consumption, heat etc. In the end, I think it is hard to go wrong with either of the sets to be honest.

Not heard the speakers and probably never will as always hooked up to the amp

ps .. was a bit gutted when i realised the tv doesn't swivel ... made life so much easier to clean the glass stand and have wacked my head a couple of time on the corner of the set

Considering how good the tv is, I think it's an easy one to live with! :D

That's good to hear. One other little question: does the UK HX923 have
this protuberance at the back?

Sony Bravia HX923 TV Thread - Part 5-prot.png

I think I might have read somewhere that it was later removed in a partial
design update.

Cheers.

Think the US model has an RS232 connector box on the back (HX929)

I think it is supposed to be able to control the TV, used in quite advanced installations, right?

Yeah think so...looks like an ugly afterthought to me!!! Must make wall hanging a bit hard unless you can unscrew it???

Having read some of the US forums it looks like it can be unscrewed.

As you say, a bit ugly, and it's nice that the UK model doesn't have it.

Have received the 65HX923 now and picture quality is REALLY GOOD. The blacks are unbelievable good. Will give it a few days before I share any more specific impressions (I'm guessing that it will just be a repeat of what others have said before). Viewing angels could be better though, so if you know you are going to do a lot of wide angel viewing, you might want to consider alternatives.

A quick question, is it obvious to use HDMI instead of VGA to connect a HTPC to this display if you have both possibilities? A few years ago, I remember discussions about the VGA port having less input lag than HDMI, and of course VGA has no overscan issues. I noticed that text (in Windows) looked quite a bit blurry with HDMI, but not with VGA (I'm using "FULL" which I believe is pixel mapping). I guess it will be HDCP issues with VGA though.

Maybe I will regret asking this, but is there a good way to test if you have banding or not, ie which will reproduce it if you have? Have watched football (some of you might call it soccer :D) for a few hours and can't see it, despite it having lots of panning over the grass field. Maybe very slight banding if you really look for it, but it could just as well be something actually in the image signal as well.

2 further questions, how do you access the service menu on this (won't change anything, just curious :D) and how do you calculate the build date (assume its from the serial)?

Check the HX853 thread for some banding test videos

Not a lot in the service menu of interest, but I got details of entering it from the HX929 thread at avsforum US forum

The build date should be on the back of the TV on a white sticker

Don't assume a later build date is better. Mine is a year or so old and it's perfect.
Software updates are quite frequent, as well. One just a day or so ago.
( The only issue with this set is it's inability to display some JEPGs from a USB stick or via LAN.
It's OK via an HDMI input from a PC for example, though.
Good quality photos look great in 1080 res. on a big screen, but as stated they won't always display. It's a chip issue, apparently. )

Sorry, I want to find a much more complicated way of finding it out

Mine had 2012, and then a "B" in a box, with a small "2" below. Around the box there were number 17, 18.....31. If it hadn't been for the fact that Sonys remotes are as confusing to understand, I would have thought it was the writting of a mad man. Any idea what it means? Or did you have an actual date printed on it? Sounds to easy

I got that movie free plus 3 other 3D movies, when Panasonic was doing the offer of giving away 4 3D Blu Rays if you bought a Blu Ray Player, I bought one, sent of a photo copy of the receipt with the claim form, returned the Blu Ray Player for a full refund as I already had one & my 4 3D Blu Rays arrived about a week later haha.

Is it not DSE & not banding your seeing, the DSE normally shows up when you have one main colour on the TV and is a panning shot.
