I would just like to drop a note of thanks to everyone on this thread for their informative and knowledgable comments.

Our 6 year old Sony 50" Rear projection finally died last week (optical block). Mrs Blackmme didn't want to lash out a lot of money without feeling that we had gotten a big upgrade (size therefore being a greater requirement than image quality).

I was certain I didn't want to spend more than a £1000, I could not care less about 3D and we have a PS3 to handle most 'smart TV' capability.
These criteria and constraints removed at a stroke most of the very excellent LED 55" inchers from Panasonic, LG, Sony and Samsung. We were therefore taking a look at the LG and Samsung Plasma's around 50" for about £700 to £800, pretty good TV's to my eye's but without much in the way of the 'wow factor'. I took a look at the Sharp and even with shop settings in Currys and Comet it looked excellent. The sales guy had absolutely 0% interest in talking about the Sharp, he said it was 'old technology' and 'not very good' luckily I delved a little further through you guys and on Saturday we weighed up our options between John Lewis and Comet. Normally a pretty straightforward decision I guess but JL couldn't deliver for nearly a week so we went to Comet and did a bit of a deal taking ownership immediately and off setting the loss of the 5 year warranty with 3 years of cover for £60 (yes I'm impatiant as my accountant wife was happy to point out) .

Suffice to say I think the Sharp might be my most satisfying AV purchase in all of my 43 years. I'm blown away by just how much the technology has come on in 6 years and by the quality of the Sharp (using the settings taken from above). Even the SD is acceptable DVD via the PS3 is excellent and as for Blu Ray it's just incredible!

So once again thanks to all on here for their excellent guidance it's truly appreciated.

Regards Mike

Got mine and very happy now I've set it up, thanks for all the usefull posts, but have 1 small question about the EPG, how do you scroll page's I seem to be only to use the up or down arrow keys and do 1 program at a time rather than a complete page??
I've also tried the P on the remote up and down but that just goes back to TV and goes up or down from the channel that was showing. hope someone can help as this is the only downside for me.

Anyone or is this the way the EPG works

I'm using the ones referenced in post 325#. Probably a bit bright for me after 5 years protecting the bulb life in a rear projection but certainly a nice image that I am going to use as a baseline.

For me the yellows on those settings arent yellow enough, more a greeny yellow. I also think colours are too low, almost a bid faded. When you see a red car example it looks like a red car thats faded and is becoming more pink than red

All these settings seem to loose color for me, or blacken the image more, think Dynamic as per default looks best to me . And in regards to the volume of the tv, I simply used some decent pc speakers i had costing around (£60) and it completes the tv perfectly for me .

However will keep an eye out for settings in case someone comes up with something fresh, always worth a try .

Up to £1299 at Comet. I reckon the two they sold in the Norwich store last Saturday within 5 minutes of each other might have had an impact

Even if it does go down to £999 will be a while before a voucher code drops it to the £760 level again

And also out of stock.
After a week now with ours I am not going to change my mind that its the best consumer electronics purchase I have ever made. At anything under £1000 there isn't anything that I could identify that could compete across size/performance criteria. If I had paid £1300 I would still be very happy compared with my other choices. It's that good.

http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/televis...-criteria.html

Currys is still showing this as £959 when you actually click on the tv in the listing.(£1199 on the listing).
Great thread by the way.I have been following with great interest.Since moving house my 37" panny now looks tiny in the new bay window.TH37PX80 is still pixel perfect after more than 3 years and the picture still looks stunning BUT it does seem to have shrunk alot in that new window.
May well need to start convincing the better half it is time for an upgrade (I mean tv, not her!)

update -sorry- same price now

Where did you order from out of interest as I'm looking to pick one up at that price. What is your opinion now that you have it set up?

I got It from here,

https://www.electricalexperience.co....uct.php/8217/0

Cheapest I could find, at £1,008.99 Inc next day delivery, there was loads at 999.99 elsewhere till late Monday night when they all shot up, I had to wait till after midnight for money to go Into my bank, so It was about 1 am when I placed the order, so was chuffed I managed to bag It.

Got It to replace a faulty 46" Tochiba, Its huge , I used the settings from an earlier post In this thread SD pretty good for the size of screen, and HD Is great.

I could only mount It on a wall right opp a window, I looked at It In Currys a while ago when on a mission to get a matte screen as possible, so was dreading the relections, but they are not too bad, Its not as glossy as many of the new screens, but a bit more reflective than the Toshiba was,

Only thing Im having trouble with Is getting things to go on seperatley named hdmi inputs

I have Sky HD plugged In on hdmi 1 via Onkyo 609 named SKY HD
PS3 In hdmi 2 (but It will only comes on hdmi 1 source)
Wiis fine on Component, renamed video and sound come through fine.

Audio sync issues...

Has anyone else noticed any major audio sync issues with the TV? I have all my devices plugged into a Onkyo TX-SR508 amplifier via HDMI cables and then I have a HDMI cable going from the amp to the TV , and everything is lagged to hell. I can set up 100ms of delay from the amplifier but that's not enough , audio still comes before the picture on all devices I've tried ( HTPC, Macbook Pro, PS3) which is REALLY ANNOYING and makes the TV borderline unusable. Otherwise I'm really happy with the TV, but...

I tried a few different configurations, such as plugging the devices directly into the TV and getting audio to the amplifier via optical cable (no help), plugged the devices directly to the TV(this worked obviously but I'm definately not going to use the TV speakers...). Anyone got any ideas? I disabled every single image quality setting I could find like film mode, smooth motion etc to try to fix the issue but to no avail.

Edit: Edited a small "brain fart" from the text

Edit2: I mainly use the settings that were listed on page 1 without some of the color corrections. Lag is apparent in game mode with active contrast, DNR and OPC disabled(whatever they are). Film mode and fine motion are disabled on default on game mode so didn't do anything to these. Is there some more settings I'm missing?

Edit3: I tried this today with some AV sync video clips and looks like I was just too paranoid and blind. looks like AV delay of 40ms is good.

Hello, I noticed this telly in Curry's and I thought well that's a good prise for a 60" telly.
I was thinking should I get it! The telly I have is the panny GT50 42" screen way too small for my viewing distance 11-12 feet The 42 inch GT50 does have 3D though however, so far I'm ambivalent about 3D, and freesat HD something I do find usefull.
