To enable THX mode there are directions here for one-for-all remotes and Harmony remotes (I used a Harmony):

http://openlgtv.org.ru/wiki/index.ph..._menus_/_modes

The password to access the service menu is 0413 and must be entered using the original LG remote.

Once you've accessed the service menu go to 'Tool Option 3' and change both the 'THX' and THX Media Director' options to '1'.

You will now have THX Cinema & THX Bright Room settings under your picture modes - all picture settings other than Trumotion and Local dimming are locked when you use these modes. You will also find a THX Cinema setting under AV Mode on the remote and in the Q Menu.

Hope this helps.

Hi mate. How did you adjust your backlight in THX mode? It's grayed out when I use the THX options.

Go into the picture setting menu and highlight thx then press 8 7 4 1 which will then give you access to adjust picture settings.... you can also use this code on expert 1 and 2 to enable the isf day and night modes..

Will this remove my customised Expert 1 / Expert 2 settings or give me an additional two presets? (I don't have THX).

All it will do is rename them isf day and isf night... i would write down your settings just in case though! it also locks out all your settings unless the 8741 code is pressed again so ideal if you have kids who like messing around with remotes etc lol..

very tempted

Hi all,

I'm very tempted to get the 47lw550 or 650 models especially as Sky are still doing the £100 cash back offer.

However the are three areas of this TV that this and other threads have worried me a little.

Lag - I game a fair bit when the wife and kids allow and wanted to know if this is all resolved now/not noticeable.

Banding - a fair number seem to suggest that the banding is bad on this set, this isn't something I've seen when looking at the set on display in Currys etc so is this a nit picking thing or a luck of the draw dependent on the set you get and it's quality control.

Motion - The only thing that I have picked up while viewing the TV in store while it showed a segment of a sky sports premier league footy game was some obvious motion issues around the ball. Is this par for the norm with the set as my 4 year old Philips LCD 9 series has no or very little motion issues and I don't want to take a step back....

P.S. sorry if this has been answered earlier in this rather large thread but I haven't found or had the time to go through every post.

Hi Pompey78,

Not posted on here for a while but I've been reading this thread for a while and after purchasing the LG47LW550T last week, thought I would add my 2 pennith worth.

To start with I'm on firmware 5.10.01

Haven't noticed the lag on gaming on PS3, Xbox 360 or Wii, after reading the many comments on this forum, I've left the input label blank on HDMI 3 (ps3) and HDMI 2( Xbox) and component (Wii) and set Picture and AV Mode to Game. tried Fifa 12, Forza 4, and Kinect games on 360 no issues. Wii and PS3 games no issues.

Only thing I've found is that when playing a game in 3D (tried on PS3) there is no Game mode available and there does seem to be some slight lag but not really a problem on games I tried (GT5, Wipeout HD).

Watching footy on this set in 3D is fantastic, in 2D is also superb but as many others have mentioned, be prepared (at first) for some DSE and banding issues, all I can say is that in 3 weeks time you will probably not even notice this when watching a game. As this missus pointed out a few years ago when I noticed banding on a Toshiba LCD I had bought, "you have just spent the best part of a grand on this so your bound to be looking for faults" and now as back then, I watched the Chelsea game tonight (not a fan by the way) and didn't really notice the banding as I was watching the game and not looking for the banding which I've found that you tend to do with your brand new display. Still haven't had time to set-up the LCD using calibration yet but I'm really impressed with the 2D image on both SD and HD sources. As well as the footy, we have watched Lion King 3D, Tangled 3D and Toystory 3 3D and I'm blown away by the quality of the picture. I have recently sat and watched both football and Movies on a Samsung active 3D display and can say with hand on heart that the LG passive 3D is a far more enjoyable (and bearable) experience.

Cheers

Skunk

Ohh - where did you find that price? Seems to be much more expensive everywhere I look.

I got the 47lw550 last Wednesday, it was from John Lewis, and it seems they have a much larger back log of these TVs in their warehouse than other stores as mine was a May build, it has FW version 3.09.06 on it, which seems fine at the moment and I'm reluctant to update to the new 5.10.02 as I don't want anything to get worse.

There doesn't seem to be any firmware history available on the LG website which does suggest a sloppy and unprofessional history of updates. When I updated for my previous TV every single mod was identified and listed, so you could decide on if you would upgrade or not.

Haven't had time to test lag on games yet, only tried Uncharted 3 and it seemed fine but this isn't the ideal game to test for lag really.

Banding is present, but only so slightly and really not that noticeable (on mine).

Motion on terrestrial/SKY is dogdy with the 'out of the box' settings, but can be tweaked easily as mentioned on this forum. I'm still not 100% happy with my tweaks but it's so much better than before.

Just to say I still have one of the Pioneer Kuros released a few years ago, and whilst this LG TV unfortunately doesn't really come close regarding SD, 2D HD, colours, contrast and motion (there are good reason's for this as price, plasma etc. play a big part).

However for the price, size and absolute awesome eye stress free 3D, there really isn't anything better in this range. You tend to get what you pay for on this TV, you'll find like a lot people have said already, it's not perfect but when all is said and done, for me it's the best in it's range. If you want better you will need to pay more. The 3D is why I got this TV, and I'm not disappointed one bit with that aspect.

Just a word of caution with the current SKY/LG deal, I got my TV 3 days before it started, and the TV was £100 cheaper than it is now, so it's not as great a deal as it sounds, chances are that when the offer ends the price of the TV will go down too, so don't feel too panicked to buy. That's unless you want one before Christmas of course!

Hi Goo5e, could you please give the different values that are available under the THX settings? I do not have a harmony remote, so was thinking if I could get the THX settings, I could put that in the Expert 1 and see if it makse a difference. Thanks in advance

I got the 55LW550t from John lewis last week, it was a JUly 2011 build, so I was rerally apprehensive. But, I do not have any banding or DSE issues, I do have some light bleeding in the bottom corners, but not too bad. Overall, very pleased with this TV, 3D is great, HD is great, SD is not all that bad too. I would recommend this tv.

Was thinking about getting this from John Lewis, but wanted them to match Richer Sounds £779.95 price AND give me their free 5 year warranty (which Richer Sounds charge another 10% for). Fear they may have some small print that lets them avoid doing that though.

Neither my local JL (Kingston) or the JL website have any stock - which branch did you get yours from?

I bought it online from Johnlewis.com. I pricematched with electrocenter, I think 47" is priced at £838 there. JL will give you 5 years guarntee free.

Totally agree sapbwstudent, got to give thanks to all the posters in this thread as well as it helped me make my decision on the TV.

I too do not have the remote for the thx hack. So is it just a case of using the same settings as somone who has done the hack.Or is there other settings not seen without it.

No probs, settings for THX night are:

Backlight 18 (this was at 50 I believe, but bleed was really bad so toned it down. I use 25 - 30 in the daytime)
Contrast 83
Brightnesn 51
H Sharpness 50
V Sharpness 50
Colour 53
Tint 0
Dynamic contrast off
Noise reduction off
Super resolution on
MPEG NR off
Black level low
Real cinema On
Edge enhancer off
xvYCC Auto
Colour filter off
Gamma 2.2
Method 10 point IRE
Pattern outer
IRE 100
Luminance 120
All colours & tints are at 0

Daytime THX settings are the same except for a higher backlight (lowered mine to 25 - 30) and gamma was set at 1.9.

I put these setting into my ISF setting and the picture looks the same as when THX is used, so should in theory give you the right settings (panel differences notwithstanding). I also found dynamic contrast set at medium gave me slightly better blacks, but personal preference I guess as is truemotion & local dimming.

BTW, if any of you happen to be in the Ipswich area then you are welcome to borrow my remote to get THX enabled.

Hope this helps.

I've had a new 42" sitting in my kitchen for a week from Amazon as the Ethernet port on my current one broke.

How can you tell what build it is?

If you can let me know what banding is and the other problems and how I look for them I'll let you know if there is a difference, when I get around to swapping them.

Also if anyone does have reccomendations for settings for a TiVo virgin box and this tv please let me know.

I just unzipped the file and copied it into a folder on my USB stick called LG_DTV. Plugged in the USB stick & the TV just prompted me to install.
