Thanks for this - so effectively I can stream to the router and then get what I'm playing on the Windows 7 PC to travel across to the TV via either ethernet cable or the wifi dongle?

Hope you can get the problem with the dark reds and browns sorted out effectively and don't have to return the TV - there's been some good advice on here, hope it helps!

Yes,

I have an ethernet connection from the tv to the router and have installed the bundled Nero Mediahome software and I can stream wirelessly from the laptop to the router which then goes along the ethernet cable to the tv (I hope that makes sense!).
It allows avi and divx (up to 6) video

ITV HD is poor no matter what you do due to all their upscaling nonsense, even a reduced bitrate BBC HD broadcast pees all over it in terms of visual quality.
Channel 4 hd is good, but only when it is hd as again they're prone to upscaling as are BBC1 HD.
Wii: best I can do given what it can output.
Blu-Ray Great! (but there are alot of naff encoded discs out there that don't live up to picture expectations).

How are you deciding on these settings you've been posting? They seem to vary quite a bit. Are you just messing around with whatever source you happen to be looking at at the time or is there some actual calibration going on?

Hi,

I recently bought this TV and so far so good. I'm having a little problem with backlight buzz and wanted to see if I'm the only one or whether it's the TV.

Basically when the backlight is not on 100% there is a hum in the background. It's not very loud but when the volume in a program drops, and is quiet, I can hear it (although probably because I know it's there).

I took one set back and got another one but this one seems to be doing the same.

Could someone who's also got this turn the sound down and turn the backlight up to full and back down again and see whether there should be some noise or whether the second set I've got is also not quite right.

Is this something common with LCD TV's? I'm also worried that if I exchange it then the same thing will happen with a different make.

Other than that seems like a pretty decent TV.

Thanks,
G

Hi Gareth

I hae tested mine and all seems well, however I wonder if you are using the Tv stand?
It could be something or nothing but I have mine wall mounted using an omnimount and I can'r replicate your issue.
Anyone else got the same result as Gareth?

Hi,

Thanks for tbe quick reply.

It is on a stand so that could be it.

Wierd thing is that if I turn the backlight up to 100% then the noise goes.

Cheers,
Gareth

Don't take this the wrong way but those screws are a Git to fully secure on the stand, seperate issue I know but It was a pain I had for fear of permanently threading the screw heads, this was a contributing factor to wall mounting it.

Hi

Settings are down to personal taste, room enironment such as lighting etc.
I've tried to come up with the best all rounder I can with these I posted, there's certainly no harm trying them and adjusting them to your personal preference.
There are a few bugs in the picture wizards which I'e accommodated for with mine.
You can purchase an LG wireless USB adapter but you may not need it.
If your set came with the Roxio software then you can put something on your laptop which then goes through your wireless connection to your router and then down your ethernet cable to your tv. You can also play divx and mpeg movies on usb directly in the tv usb port. (at the side).
If you use netcast and watch iplayer, get a decent broadband allowance as it eats it!!
here's a link to where you can buy the adapter if you wish:
LG TV Accessories AN-WF100 - Debenhams Extra
I know..Denenhams!!!??

Second telly going back!

After a couple of days it's still buzzing and after listening to a friends 40" Samsung (which had a fan noise but was otherwise silent), I've decided it needs to go back.

Really annoyed as, otherwise, it does everything that I need it to. Maybe I've just got a bad batch but I'm not willing to pay good money for a TV that buzzes that much!

I know! that's what I originally wanted but the GF is adamant that a 40" will be too big - and as our viewing distance will be 8 feet I think that she might have a point.......but not much of one

Might get it, hide the box, and than claim it's a 37"............

Personally I wouldn't pass this one up,(bravia) had a few and no issues whatsoever. It came into stock before my 30 days were up with my LG but It's not fair on them If I took it back for the sake of a swap.
Even so, mine doesn't suffer from the problem you experienced and the sound makes up for an amicable solution despite currently not wired to a home cinema.
I too have fell foul of of LG quality control inconsistency and sadly it appears to really cheese a few people off stating they'll neer go back to the brand, but honestly for me this (so far) has been marvellous.
Remember the Scarlet with Lindsay Lohan, released in amarketing frenzy these looked just about the best tv's next to a B & O that you could buy, but again they were beseiged with problems and oer processing issues from the critics, but again, I personally could lie with that and felt the pros far outweighed the cons.
Take my Father in law as an example who tooted off for a 50" LG Plasma (he's partially deaf)and got it home only to find there was no headphone socket which i think is a no brainer, it should be there along with the basic connections every time. says it all really,

For anyone wanting a tilting wall bracket. I bought this one:
<link rel="canonical" href="http://www.play.com/ProductOutline.html">Designer Habitat (was cheaper on Play.com but is also sold on amazon.co.uk). £19.44 free delivery at the time.

Easy to fit (fitted it to the wall studs)

I got the 42" & I'm viewing it from exactly 8 feet. We thought it may be too big before it were up & its not too big at all. If you have a PS3 & like racing get WipeoutHD Fury.. Excellent!

A video I really quite like & looks brilliant on this tv is 'The Sandpit' by Sam O'Hare. Download it in 720p & put it on a usb stick.

I used 'downloadhelper' plugin for firefox to get the video.

This tv plays from a usb formatted in fat32 & NTFS.

The screen at the left & right side is slightly darker. Anyone got any ideas?

Viewing angle? In my opinion my 37" version only flaw, not as good as the Bravia I had in this department but as the sofa is suqare on anyway it isn't an issue for me.

The inch wide darkness down both sides is apparent regardless of the viewing angle. I feel it a minor irritant & will live with it rather than exchanging it for possibly the same or worse.
I find the viewing angle really good on this tv, it looks good from anywhere in the room. I thought maybe someone may have had the same problem, maybe it got worse and needed to be returned or it was overcome by fiddling with the settings (unlikely).

Also if anyone has a contourHD camera this tv plays the mov files without issue.

I'm trying to decide whether to get this TV or the more basic LG 42LD450. The only differences I can see are 1 less HDMI, regular freeview, and no netcast. Not sure I need those really as I have a V+ box and netcast seems gimmicky. Plus everywhere that prices the 490 decently seems to be out of stock :/

Can anyone help me out?

1. I'm not sure having 1 less hdmi cable is going to be a problem for most people.

2. If you're getting the freeview HD channels through V+ then you don't need that feature. But don't virgin charge for HD content a monthly rate?

3. Netcast is good - you can watch all the iplayer programmes on your TV rather than on a PC, and it means there's always something interesting to watch when you switch on the TV. Also you have access to youtube on your tv which is nice too. Admittedly I'm not so interested in the other netcast features (facebook, weather, and pay per view films, etc) but iplayer and youtube alone are very good. Also netcast is kept updated so more interesting content may be available on it soon.

Good luck making the right decision about which tv to get.

£453.99 for the LG LD490 on amazon as I type
Amazon.co.uk: Used and New: LG 42LD490 42-inch Widescreen 1080p Full HD LCD Internet TV with built in Freeview HD

BBC IPlayer is HD on the tv too but doesn't play as smoothly as downloading it to pc first to watch from a usb plugged into tv. Our laptop is low spec so this is our preferred method.

A Steal!!

I upgraded my Broadband deal this week and now am unlimited.
This also means I can fully utilise the iplayer which is near dvd quality on the stuff I watched with the kids this morning (iplayer is part of Netcast on this tv in case anyone is wondering).
It does stutter on start, but then plays flawlessly while it buffers, very pleased indeed.
One word of caution, I have BT Vision and was watching some classic music videos, they were compressed and the sound was reverbing terribly and can easily overload the lg speakers in not too nice a way when infinate sound is enabled, it's perfect all other times though and does a nice job of throwing the sound around the room actually, I leae clear voice off, infinate sound won't work with it on anyway.

Agreed it does throw the sound around the room quite well & doesn't sound too bad. Sitting 8 feet away SD doesn't look too bad either. Most of what we watch will be in SD & SD looked better than all the other sets I saw on richersounds wall when shopping around.
Shame they didn't have the same delivery options as amazon or they would have had £448.99 from me that day.

Can you get to the inputs at the back and side of the pc ok with this wall mount? I am thinking of getting this one too. Does it come with the wall fittings too or do you have to provide your own?

The 'Designer Habitat LCD Plasma Tilting Wall TV Bracket' comes with a lot of fittings as you can see. The right ones for this tv are included.

Yes the back 'jack pack' is easy enough to get to, just tilt the tv upwards & its so much easier & you can see the side 'jack pack' to plug stuff in.

I took the plaster back & fitted two lengths of wood along our beams as they weren't strong enough. Picture below.
A brick wall would be easier to fit to but more difficult to hide cables.
Make sure you drill into brick & not mortar.
The gaps in the bracket would allow for a wall socket to be fitted behind the tv too.

I used a long spirit level to get it right but the ones on the bracket are suprisingly accurate.

Getting the right height for the tv from the floor was the most difficult part for me. The viewing angle is so good I could have put it higher up the wall.

Hi

I run an ethernet cable from my tv down some neat cable covering to the router and I've yet to see a wireless solution that was better than a wired one.
However wireless does do away with cable issues but I figured as there's a power cable anyway why bother and I hid them all including the HDMI.
Still tempted by the usb just to ease the burden on the tightly clamped cable cover but I'll wait until it goes half the price I think.
iplayer had some buffering issues via netcast but there was an update to help with this last December.(so I was told-don't quote me if I'm wrong).
Even with my cabled 7meg connection programmes have a 10 second delay at the beginning but then play fine.
I take it you've installed the nero software and tried a stream from the pc to the tv?

Like you've I'm using a wired ethernet connection and the net connection is going nicely. Buffer time is a bit annoying but I can't imagine the LG wifi dongle improving that. Wired internet connection has to be faster and more stable than wireless. Ethernet cable is alot cheaper than the dongle (less than £3 for 20 metres on amazon v. £50 for the dongle) plus leaves your USB slot in the tv free for flash drives/external hard drive.

To stream from windows 7 I need to use Nero software? Not tried that yet but looking forward to.

Nero mediahome 4 and control centre 4.
It should be on disc when you got the tv?
