I think what Mark Uk says above in this thread (post dated 20-12-2011, 4:00 PM ) is that he has used an HDD with recorded material in a different TV than the one he used to record it (although I suppose both of them are Vieras).

On the other hand, yesterday I transfered a copy of the files from my HDD to my PC, and there's a new file called loop.tts.
This file is not like the other .tts, in the sense that the other ones come with a set of .aid, .vid and .dat files... or in other words: this one is the live recording that lets you stop/pause/rewind live TV. The interesting part is that the TV can play that file without the .aid, .vid and .dat files.

Regards.

Hello again.

My previous post was erased by an administrator because I put a link to a forum where we try to decrypt a file or TTS.

On these images is a summary of my work, I hope I wrote understandable.

AID and VID files are used to TRICK MODE - are not important to decrypt.
It is important to name / file number - if you change it to TV will not play the file.
It is probably also used to encode the random number.

Hi, I've got a TX-L32DT30B and having trouble with the HDD recording.

What HDD drives have people found the best to use and do they have their own power supply (as opposed to being powered by the TV through the USB)?

I have a Toshiba 1TB Hard drive, I set the HDD drive up fine and everything was working ok, but after a period of time the TV seems to stop recognising it or it somehow becomes disconnected from the set up, which is obviously annoying when I have programmes set to record, I then have to unplug and plug the HDD back in to get in to recognise it again and set it up again. Has anyone seen this problem? I wondered if it is because this hard drive is powered through the usb rather than an external power supply.

Thanks in advance for any help.

If you use a drive that is not really recommended then in all fairness to the manufacturer then its not going to work correctly.
My HDD draws its power through the USB port on the TV.

HI Mark,

Can you tell me what drives are recommended by Panasonic? All I could find was that they recommend an odd spec of Buffalo drive that is not available in the UK, can you tell me what HDD you use?

I looked back in my old emails and the hard drive I use is
Buffalo Juststore 500GB USB 2.0 Slimline Portable External Hard Drive.
This is for a different model of Panasonic TV but it works flawlessly.

The link was

Buffalo Juststore 500GB USB 2.0 Slimline Portable External Hard Drive - Black: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories

As for other drives I honestly dont know which drive is for your TV?

I think that the Buffalo is recommended because that is all they tested.

I have been using a Freecom XXS bus powered drive for over a year and it has worked flawlessley.

Excellent.
The only way to find out other peoples experiences is to post them up on a forum.
I just used the easy route and utilised the recommended hard drive.

I have a Seagate USB power HDD and I have a similar problem Ngod23. I have a message pop up every 30min or so to say USB device detected. Now not sue if this happens as I had to buy a USB extension cable or the fact that the USB power HDD not working. Might swap it out for a Buffalo tomorrow with an external power supply.

Sorry for picking up an old thread again....

Here, Mark says that he could swap a HDD from one Viera to another.

In my case, I have just failed to do so....

HDD was on a P42G20B (which failed terminally at 13 months old) so, whilst waiting for my case to get to the Small Claims Court, I bought a P50G30B but, although it will tell me the HDD serial number that the previous set allocated, it won't read it, it wants to re-format it again.

I've plugged a spare USB HDD in temporarily and formatted it and all is well so nothing wrong with the new TV.

So, any further news on extracting the files, or maybe, a way of doing a direct copy from the previous HDD to the new HDD which is recognised by the new TV ???

Sorry Mark, this is what I was refering to "using a HDD on a different TV"

I assumed what you meant was using a HDD recorded on one TV, on a different TV.

So, if this is out of the question, is it possible to copy the files from one HDD to another (recognised one) without re-formatting ???

Sorry for my English - I'm Polish.

Hi

I have a TV PANASONIC VIERA TX-L37E30E
I use an USB HDD to recording TV (160 GB)
I'm interesting to get recorded files from HDD and play them into PC.

Working stages:
1-Fix de partition type
2-Mount the file system
3-Copy files into external system
4-See media files into Media Player

1-Fix de partition type:
System files are UFS2 used in FreeBSD. See them with Gparted (Ubuntu)

2-Mount the file system:
You can mount the file system from Ubuntu, using de command line (in graphic mode doesn't work):
sudo mount -t ufs -o ro,ufstype=ufs2 /dev/<partition> /media/<folder> (then you need to change file permissions.
In my case I activated a root account and I mounted:
mount -t ufs -o ro,ufstype=ufs2 /dev/sdb1 /media (see with GParted disk USB name, in my case sdb1)

3-Copy files in a external system:
Now you can work in graphic mode, You will find de mounted file system in /media, in a folder called "private", inside this folder are all files used by Panasonic. You can use Administrator files to change access permissions and copy them to everywhere you like.
For each recording will find four files with extensions: chp, aid, tts and vid.
Audio and video are in tts file.

4-See media files in a Media Player:
I STILL CAN'T PLAY MEDIA FILES. Only VCL Media Player recognize tts files, but don't find video. It would be some encryption, or I don't have correct codec

I NEED HELP
Thanks a lot

To do this you obviously have to mount one of the panny formatted HDDs as writeable and I have not been able to do this either in Ubuntu (having recompiled the kernel to allow UFS write) or FreeBSD. Is there a Unix expert who could help please?

Did you tried to mount it as Udf2 ? :
sudo mount -t ufs -o ro,ufstype=ufs2 /dev/<partition> /media/<folder> (See with Gparted partition name- in my case sdb1)

I mounted as a root account in Ubuntu 11.10
mount -t ufs -o ro,ufstype=ufs2 /dev/sdb1 /media. Then I copied files to Ubuntu's filesystem (Ext4) and then to a pendrive.

Before, I installed FreeBSD (UFS) in a notebook, and I coudn't mount USB HDD.
It was been easy in Ubuntu 11.10

Yes, but the ro option mounts the disk read only. I need to:
sudo mount -t ufs -o rw ...............................

I had a problem with the TV which necessitated restoring the factory settings. After doing this the TV no longer recognised the HDD which had several recordings on it. I thought that if the TV formatted another HDD I could copy the recordings from the old HDD to the new one. As yet I have not managed to find a way to do this.

Copying the files to a PC is useless unless there is an application that will play them.

I'm using the latest Knoppix. I installed the USB stick - works better.
A typical command to mount in the root user:
Code:
mount -w -t ufs -o ufstype=ufs2 /dev/sdb1 /example/path_on_pen
mount -t ufs -o remount,rw /dev/sdb1 /example/path_on_pen
Important are the two commands. Mounted HDD must be viewed as ROOT, not plain USER - so we can delete, save, change. Before disconnecting necessarily unmount HDD (right mouse button is enough).

Somewhat like Rod S, I had a problem with my G20B so I needed to do a factory reset. However, my HDD is no longer registered and if I try and re-register it, all previous data will be destroyed.

So could I copy all of my .tss, vid etc .... files onto a spare disk (using Ubuntu or whatever) and then register my disk again, and once relinked back to my TV again, copy the .tts and other files back onto the disk ?

I have several programs recorded from original broadcasts which I do not want to lose right now.

If You only using factory rerset from menu, then Your copy files works on the TV.

If You using "While pressing [VOLUME ( - )] button on the main unit, press [MENU] button on the remote control for more than 3 seconds." then Your copy files do not works on the TV.

Sorry for my english.

Aw crap, I needed to do the Volume - button method.

I had a problem where I could not turn off the subtitles off BBC channels and the Factory Reset from menu did not work so I had no option but to do the Volume - method.

I've plugged an external Samsung 320GB USB drive into the slot on the side of My Panasonic G20 plasma telly, and then went into the menu, and format drive.

It recognises the drive, but when I press OK to reformat it, it immediately says 'Registration failed. Please check cables and settings.'

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?
Thank you.

Hi, mount is ok under Knoppix.
But I can't copy file more than 2G to HDD used by Pana TV under Knoppix.
(Error: file too large(27))
Copy is ok to NTFS HDD.
Have you any idea?
Thanks, Fezsoka from Hungary.

TTS files now can only be played on a television on which they were recorded.
Problem decrypting has not yet been resolved.

You can make a copy of the TTS files (DAT, AID, VID and TTS) on any disk (I recommend NTFS format). Then the TTS files (DAT, AID, VID and TTS) can be burned to disc and watch TV (provided they have not done SELF TEST TV).

I write out instructions to copy and burn files TTS. As will be ready to place it.

PS I had no problems with the large size of the peaks did not.

Yes, Yes, Yes - I finally got my old disk data again.

The solution is really quite simple - but maybe difficult to achieve. My problem was that my disk was OK but I have resetted my TV to Factory Shipped condition and so it no longer recognised my drive.

What I did was to format another disk with the TV. This created a simple single file called "bind.id". This is the link between your TV identity and your Hard disk. So I then copied this file over the old file on my USB HDD and hey presto, all previous content was there, large as life.

So what's so difficult about achieving this you may ask ? The files are in the format UFS. UFS is supported by Ubuntu but only via Read-Only !! So I needed to build myself an Ubuntu v8.10 PC you then have to re-compile the Kernel in order to turn on the option of RW. I tried with Ubuntu 11.10 but it would not work on it so maybe only possible on 8.10. I knew nothing about Linux before starting but got help thankfully, and used the following for guidance - Mounting-ufs-in-readwrite-under-linux/

In order to mount the disks, I got the following commands to work

#mount -t ufs -o ufstype=ufs2 /dev/sdb1 /mnt

and to mount for RW

#mount -o remount,rw /mnt

I also tested copying files from my old disk to the new one but I seemed to hit some form of 2gb copying limit but the files were certainly listed which surprised me. Sorry, I never thought of trying to play it on the new disk to see if it worked.

So, it's a pain but well and truly possible, even for non-Linux users

I have a question.

How did "resetted my TV to Factory Shipped condition"?
You use a menu position item from the TV (first metod) or you used "While pressing [VOLUME (-)] button on the main unit, press [MENU] button on the remote control for more than 3 seconds."(second metod, then change keys for decoding) ?

The file bind.id I wrote on my forum. I confirm that bind.id file is only used to name the disk.

Thanks for the info about the bind.id file. That may come in handy if a problem occur. I am a linux user (writing this with Kubuntu), so I have the set up in place. I have mounted these disks before on my PC but more to find a way of accessing the recordings but no luck so far.

I first used the Menu item in the TV but no luck. I quickly saw that this wasn't a Real reset because some info like the UK postcode was retained so I had no option but to go with the second option using the Menu with the Vol button
