Melted HDMI lead....

Hi all, not really sure where to put this thread but as it's TV related why not here.
In a nutshell last night my new Samsung TV would not turn on, the power light was blinking but no picture. I checked the cables etc but struggled to get the HDMI out, the reason why is it had melted into the TV (it's connected at the other end to a Virgin HD box), anyone heard of this before? The wall behind was actually scortched so it must have got pretty hot.

Anyway the TV will be going back to the retailer, however I can see them arguing that it could have been the cable or Virgin box that caused it, not the TV.

Any suggestions appreciated............

I would imagine if the cable isn't damaged along its length and the end at the Virgin box is fine then there is only really one source for the heat - the tv. I could be wrong but logic would tell me that is where the problem is. The cable doesn't have a power source and if the power/heat had been coming from the Virgin box it would have damaged the end near to it, no?

Cheers

Craig

Do you have a TV aerial connected, and have there been any lighting around your way?

No ariel, and we haven't had any storms....
all in an odd one, the pain I have as well is now having to replace the HDMI cable that is inside the wall. I have a pull cable, but it's still going to be tricky.

If the TV is at fault I wouldn't mention to the retailer there is a cable in the wall, they will probably use that as an excuse to blame the cable.

Depending on what you told the supplier, you could also put the 3/5amp fuse from the plug into a kettle to pop it, then back into the TV plug. That would indicate that a TV fault popped the fuse, with may help the argument that the TV has a fault.

If no other wiring was changed, then it really does look like some a faulty unit - very strange...

Also a silly thing to do - not recommended.

You could be charged for a fault that doesn't exist and repair engineers know most of the 'fiddles'.

Also, if still under guarantee it could be withdrawn; and your name will put into a database for future reference.

Hi All, just a quick update re this issue. Took the TV back to the retailer (Richer Sounds) basically showed them the lead and TV and they immediatly offered a replacement.

No mention of a repair, or querying the fault.

A big thankyou to Richer Sounds, fantastic service.... Actually nice to have a positive with a retailer rather than the horror stories that usually get posted.
