Just to echo Member 468659's question and address TheRedGuy's comment, how does the viewing angle and sound and picture quality (SD upscaling/native Freeview HD/Blu-Ray) of the 32RV753 compare to the 32RV635DB?

thats an ace price!

p.s to be able to check for firmware updates via ethernet you need to disable auto ip address setup and auto dns setup i found when using a router, use the network test to check if the internet connection is working.

I've just bought one of these but am thinking of returning it.
Can you tell me exactly what you get by connecting the tv to a network using the LAN port.
The guy in comet told me that i would be able to access bbc iplayer and youtube etc.
I've see other tv sets which do this but im not sure the tosh does. looks to me like the connection simply allows you to stream stuff (photos video) from your pc.
Am i right?
Help appreciated as would like to get it returned tomorrow if it doesn't do what i want it to.
Cheers

it doesn't have bbc iplayer, youtube etc, he lied to you. The network port is for firmware updates and also DNLA so you can stream videos from your pc to your TV.

considering getting one of these - 32rv753b - (cant seem to find the 32vl733 anywhere. not even online)

just wanted to know what type of panel it is? (ips, s-pva etc)

would also like to know what the vertical viewing angle is like. everyone always says horizontal viewing angles, but ill be watching from below the tv slightly (its up on a side cabinet) so vertical is important for me.

also if someone could post their calibration settings it would be a nice start for some of us for who calibration is some form of witchcraft

never heard of the 32vl733.

The 37RV753 can be had for £404 @ Tesco and the 40RV753 can be had for £449 @ Dixons. 32RV753 can be had for £352.

Just bought the 40RV753DB from John Lewis for my mum. £499 in-store and online, and includes the usual John Lewis 5-year warranty.

This was bought to replace an eBuyer Foehn & Hirsch 42inch we bought her back in April (the plastic bezel around the screen started to crack after three months, and the replacement was smashed to pieces by ParcelForce - now out of stock at eBuyer which is a shame as it was a good telly and great spec).

Anyway, back to the Tosh. Happy with the picture (though needed a degree of tweaking of backlight and colour settings. The sound is average, but good enough for my mum who isn't as fussy about home cinema as I am. Has required a lot of tweaking of bass and treble settings to eliminate peak distortion, but got there in the end.

Excellent build quality with a big heavy swivel stand and wide connecting bracket to bond stand to tv. Equally well made remote control which can also perform basic Tosh DVD functions.

Freeview and Freeview HD channel changing is a bit slow, so be prepared for a second of lag when keying in channel numbers. 2 scarts and 4 HDMI ports is very handy.

Back at my house, still using my trusty LG 42LH4000 (with USB DivX playback hack).

you should see if john lewis has a 2 week price match promise as they might pricematch Dixons and refund you £50. Worth a shot.

Can you please post your calibration settings to video and audio please Commodore.

Bought in store so John Lewis will only price match nearby shops, not online prices (plus the Never Knowingly Undersold price match promise does not apply to online John Lewis sales anyway).

Will post calibration settings once I'm happy with them and stop fiddling.

Bought a 37RV753 from Tesco and it's buzzing like an aeroplane. A terrible shame, as otherwise it's absolutely stunningly brilliant.

It's the usual Toshiba fault with backlight dimming (see other threads here). If you set the backlight to maximum (and put sunglasses on) it's quiet. Anything below 93% buzzes.

I've just arranged for a replacement TV (same model again), but I don't hold out much hope.

Are the 32 and 40 inch versions quiet? If so then I'll change to one of these after I find the replacement's just the same.

Interestingly, from reading the Welcome to AUO Online site (the maker of the LCD panels for Toshiba), the 32 and 40 use "AMVA3" mode, whereas the 37 uses "AMVA". Perhaps this is relevant to the backlight dimmer, perhaps not.

Hi Brandysnap,

If the viewing angle is important to you I would seriously go and take a look at the RV753 before you buy it.In my opinion it's the only bad thing about the set. Great if you watch head on but poor from anything off center. This applies to vertical viewing angle too. Try before you buy it.

I've kept mine as I like the picture but we do not watch from an angle. I was initially going to return it but for the money it's a good buy and with the money I saved I bought a sony bdp s370 blu ray which will play all my medial files via usb and has great Iplayer

I find the 37" at least is pretty good when viewed at an angle. It's definitely better than my old LCD screen and laptop anyway. I wonder if there are differences between the sizes.

Definitely worth having a look before buying though.

Hmmm. Just got my replacement 37RV753. Guess what - it buzzes louder than the previous one. It must be a design fault, perhaps with just the 37" version.

If it's relevant, the batch number of the new one was +1 over the previous one.

Can other people with 32", 37" or 40" models please state whether or not theirs buzzes?

I hate the buzzing, but really like everything else about this TV. If it's a case of swapping for either of the other sizes then that could be an option.

I've now arranged for the second 37RV753 to be collected by Tesco Direct for a refund.

The woman on the phone said that someone else had rung about buzzing on a Toshiba this morning. When she rang tech support she just said it was someone about a buzzing TV. He replied with "Toshiba?".

From my experience the 37" version of this model is a lemon, especially now the price is back up to £450.

I've now ordered a Philips 37PFL5604H from Electrical Experience for £409. It doesn't have Freeview HD built in, but looks like it's several classes better in quality terms. When I can receive HD I'll be getting a PVR anyway, so inbuilt HD's of no use to me.

So that's the end of my week's experience of owning two Toshiba LCDs!

Does anyone have any experience of the Ethernet functionality of these sets.

Are there any constraints of the file types that are supported, Divx Xvid etc. Can you stream from WMP and other media players.

And will iPlayer work, Toshiba support tell it will but I'm sceptical, also will the ITV & CH4 catch up services work

i think the ethernet connection is only for firmware updates. There's no iplayer or any other internet service available. I doubt you can stream video using DNLA as there's no option to play video files on the tv only JPG photos.

Actually it goes much further:

"Windows 7 certified. Integrated DLNA technology allows you to wirelessly connect to your REGZA TV, via an optional Toshiba USB dongle, to your compatible Windows 7 laptop and stream multimedia content including music, video and images. Now it’s easy to move files between your TV, PC, printer, music player, phone, camera and more, wherever they are in the home. By integrating your TV into a home network, either wirelessly or via a cable, you can use your REGZA remote to find multimedia on your DLNA-enabled laptop elsewhere in the house and call them up to your living room TV screen. Imagine the possibilities."

I think it has its own media player that can play videos from a DLNA server on the network. I connected mine up and checked it got an IP address from the router OK. I also got it to directly check with Toshiba for firmware updates (none). There's loads of stuff to play with in the menus.

From what I've read of DLNA on wikipedia, I believe it's also possible to sit on your sofa with your laptop and remotely "take control" of the TV and chuck a video at it. Don't quote me on this though - I could be wrong, based on limited understanding of the three categories of device.

I started experimenting, filled the laptop with Nero demo software then decided to replace the TV with another that doesn't have DLNA anyway.

the description on toshiba's site is wrong, they also say they have 2 usb ports and a sd card reader, they have no card reader and only 1 usb port. I don't think these actually have DNLA.

I got the 37" version of this TV on the £399 Tesco's deal a few weeks ago, great TV, Freeview HD built in is great for this price. The SD picture is really good also, much better than the TV's in the same price range, no problem with bozzing so far fingers crossed !

The only problem I have had is with my SKY+ box, after getting this TV, my SKY+ remote seemed to stop working, I tried an alternate remote and the same problem, I then noticed the red light on the sky was lighting intermittently when I pressed a button, for every 20 key presses, 1 was registered. After lots of messing around, I found the sky remote light on the sky box worked prefectly when the TV was switched off ???? I have the sky box on a cabinet below the TV, so I just pushed the sky box back 6" into the cabinet so it was resessed and it works perfectly now, so must be some sort of interference from the Toshiba TV. Just thought I'd mention that incase anyone has a similar problem, as I spent an afternoon pulling my hair out with it

Has anyone got the optimal setup settings for this TV ?

I bought a 37RV753 this week and having played about with it a fair bit here are a few observations:

Personally I really like the set and the picture seems every bit as good as the 37XV635 that it replaces due to a fault. The Freeview HD picture is brilliant just a shame there isn't anything worth watching though!

Unfortunately it is going to have to go back because it has the Buzzing Backlight problem as well as some missing functionality. There is no SD card reader, it does not have SoundNavi or as far as I can see Active Vision II despite these being part of the product specification on the Toshiba UK website. I have spoken to Toshiba Customer Support who have advised returning it for replacement presumably, in the hope that a different set will miraculously have the missing features , and letting them know if the new set has the same deficiencies!

On the plus side though the DLNA features do work, at least via Ethernet. These work fine using WMP 12 in Windows 7 and I have Mezzmo working on XP but WMP 11 doesn't seem to support Video files on XP. I guess rather predictably (but unstated in the sales blurb) I have been unable to get a WIFI dongle to work so I suspect that it needs to be a Toshiba dongle at some horrendous cost.

All in all a bit of a mixed bag I guess

Anybody care to test out the average input lag time on one of these (particularly the 40RV753 or 40LV713) in game mode? It's either this or a plasma and I'd prefer to use my computer with a higher resolution screen, the LG's are a bit slow this year with input lag. Thanks

Samsung 37" panels buzz too and both are likely to the same panel from AUO.
