Exclamation SONY Bravia KDL 40W4500, screen problems

Dear all,
Just wanted to check if any one can throw light in to what is happening to my 13 month old Sony TV. For the past few days when I switch it on there is a dark patch in centre and whole of right half of the screen is jumbled up and there are lines running across. After abt 5 minutes it becomes normal. it happens regardless of what input ( sattlite/bluray)is played. Any idea what might be happening. I am just out of the manufactures warranty but got a store cover still on. I have attached screen shots here.
Many thanks
eliasthom

Hi,

I'm having very similar problems on my KDL46X3000 but nobody has been able to provide any more info so I can only assume it's a pretty isolated fault.

Would be interested to hear your resolution. I'm holding out for as long as I can - can't really afford the repair bills...

Best of luck

My 40w4500 is currently in the process of being investigated by the repair shop. At 14 months old it started developing the same problem as your screenshots. I phoned the warranty company 4 weeks ago and a whole new panel has been ordered. It has got a lot worse in the last 2 weeks. Sometimes it can take up to an hour to clear and at times it is unwatchable. Apparently the part is coming from America and is delayed. Presumably to do with the fact that Sony USA have issued a notice on their site about identical problems with 2 models which they are repairing free of charge. Sony eSupport - KDL-46XBR4 - News & Alerts

There appears to be a problem for a few different Sony models that I've read about. According to my engineer some people have had their sets replaced by Sony.
There is another thread worth reading here. Picture Distortion on Bravia 40W4500

I am having identical problems with my 2 year old KDL-46X3000. I called Sony who unhelpfully acknowledged this problem on US sets but not UK sets, so I would be keen to hear of any resolution.

I bought my KDL46X3000 through a friend (Sony staff sales) for £1000 in October 2008. I took it to an official Sony repair centre who charged me £120 inspection fee then quoted a total repair cost of £990.

I wrote to Sony CIC in Basingstoke stating the facts and asking them to cover the costs of repair.

Had a call from the repair shop saying Sony had been in touch and would repair the TV under warranty at no further cost to myself. All this happened in under a week so massive result and a great experience for me.

These things happen, it's how the company chooses to deal with it that stands them apart.

Thanks, very interesting. What did the repair shop say the problem actually was?

Can anyone tell me which 2010 model is the equivalent of the 4500?

I ask as my friend's 4500 is in for repair with Sony telling him the part needed will not be available until September. He is not prepared to accept this and Sony is now considering a replacement set so he wondered what the current equivalent model is.

Thanks,

Sony Bravia KDL-46W4500 problem - picture broken and buzzing

YouTube - Sony Bravia KDL-46W4500 problem

This started happening on my Sony Bravia KDL-46W4500 this week and I am not happy about it (after all its supposed to be built to last right?). Its about 18 months old and does this weird effect in the video usually when I turn the set on from cold. Around the back of the set there is a slight buzzing sound, and as the video demostrates it eventually stops doing it, but occasionally does it for a split second during a film or game.

It's covered by a 3 year Sony warranty, and at the moment my general thoughts are to live with it (providing it doesn't get too obtrusive) and attempt to get it fixed nearer the end of the warranty. The thinking behind this is that if it cannot be repaired then they should replace it with a newer W model, although I am unsure if this 3 year warranty covers it.

Has anyone actually had to claim on their Sony warranty and if so, how do they go about trying to get it repaired? Can things be done onsite, or do I have to try and drag it somewhere (not easy as it is 46") or worse still, ship it somewhere? (the packaging has long gone, and generally it is useless to repackage it up anyway.

I am concerned that I will end up gettting a crappy refurb or similar, or its constantly back and forwards for repair.

Any info greatly recieved, especially if someone knows whats wrong and how to fix it?

Can anyone advise on this? My friend has been offered the KDL40EX403.

Thanks.

Surely it should be in the W range at least?

I have the same problem on my kdl40w4500.

It appeared a month ago and got worse last week.

However, after being away for a week it now only lasts for a minute or two as opposed to nearly an hour before.

It's only 16 months old and I'll be contacting Sony to undertake the costs.

I have had the same problem for the last 3 months or so with a KDL-46X3000.

How are you getting on with getting this fixed. In most cases, the problem seems to start after 14 months or so, just after the 1 year warranty expires. I have spoken to a local Sony repairer who confirm that he has seen this problem several times recently and the fix requires a replacement screen which includes the faulty component, which costs over £950 incl. labour. It seems to me that this is now established as a known manufacturing fault affecting several models (but all I guess with a common component part) and ordinarily should warrant a form of product recall if Sony wish to protect their brand image.

SDMDAM -Thanks for the info. Did you friend contact Sony directly?

I've called them and they said they'll put me in touch with a service centre and that I will have to pay. I then need to send invoices and they will give a goodwill gesture.

This could amount to peanuts and they are not willing to say how much.

How did your friend go about getting his sorted?

Cheers

At first he phoned Sony and explained what the problem was and also mentioned that he understood this to be a known issue with this particular model. Sony said that they would need to arrange for an approved repair company to inspect the screen to see what the problem was. There was mention of a £65 (I am guessing the amount) repair cost but Sony would wait until they knew the issue before this would potentially be payable.

The repair company came to his house, inspected the screen and said they would need to take it away but did say that there were known issues with this screen.

After a few days he got a call to say that the screen needed a part that would not be available until September and that the repair would be approx. £500 + labour

He then contacted Sony and explained that he only had one TV in the house (genuine) and that he had recently invested in an HD TV box to watch the World Cup and he could not wait until September. After a day he received a call from the repair company confirming that Sony has agreed to supply him with a new TV set which was today confirmed as a 503.

I have paraphrased some of this but this is basically what happened. At all times he was very polite with Sony but he did mention these forums and the fact that this was a known issue.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

Is this a good replacement for a W model though? I've just looked at Sony's website and just when you think you've got to know the range it changes again to have far too many models again. The simplified it a year or so back with L / V / W / X etc, but now they seem to be using 2 letters and there are a few W models.

I think the model numbers are confusing. The spec seems similar though and my friend is happy. If it were me I may have looked more closely at the specs but he is not a geek like me

GUTTED for you all with problems with your TV!!!!

Same thing happend to mine last week, 45xx.

Would happend from a cold start and the only way I could clear the screen was to apply a slight twist to either side of the TV.

Mine was bought October 08 from John Lewis so had the 5 year warranty.

I rung up JL on friday, and saturday got a call saying Hertford TV service would come out on Tuesday to repair my TV.

Sure enough, guy come out and had no intention to fix TV but to take it away :-(

My TV was wall mounted and had no stand, so it was just whipped off the wall, no stand, no box and plonked in the back of the guys van and off went my TV. Oh he left me a little TV as a loan TV.

Couple of things worry me. 1 is cosmetic damage to my TV and 2 the TV seems to be a known Lemon so what do you think will happen? Will it get fixed or replaced?

Does anyone have experience with Hertford TV service and John Lewis?

I bought from JL in the hope that you get looked after. Guess ill find out soon!

Well, its Friday, 11th June and my TV went in Tues the 8th June :-(

Was told an engineer would come out and fix my TV but he come and took it away.

Was told id get it back by end of week, great I thought, just in time for the start of the football but sadly it dont look like thats going to happen.

Was given a tiny loan set, we are talking a philips portable LCD thing and tried to watch some football on sky sports but picture was just one big blur so its going to be useless for the world cup :-(

I know a few people on here who had the same problems with the TV, had them replaced, has anyone had ther TV repaired? if so, how long did it take?

Cheers

My 14 months old 40w4500 was repaired under warranty in March. It was picked up and covered in a load of bubble wrap. I got it back within 3 days. Everything seems to be fine so far.

Update

Just had a call from repair centre, and was told they cant get hold of the part my set needs for a very long time, so Sony are willing to replace my tv with a KDL-40EX503

Does anyone know if that TV their offering is any good? I just dont get the model numbers on the TVs anymore so not sure where it sits compared to the TV that cant be fixed.

Cheers

Good news, after contacting Sony direct, they have agreed to fund the repair as a goodwill gesture - the TV is out of warranty.

Next challenge I guess is whether or not the local repair agent can source the replacement part - which is the entire LCD display panel costing over £890 including fitting.

I have the same problem with the kdl40w4500. It started when the tv was 15 months old in March (3 months out of warranty) and I contacted Sony and to cut a very long story short I am still arguing with them. After around 25 phone calls, several letters, having the tv inspected by their authorised service centre (and paying for the privilege), I am also being offered a replacement (the kdl40ex503) as the part will not be available till end of September, but they want me to pay £450 and are only offering me a one year warranty. It seems Sony has a problem (there are discussions on other forums on this subject) but are not willing to admit it. Have always bought Sony tvs, but definately will not be doing so again.

Any advice gratefully received!
