Hi Philips,
Any idea what panels these sets will use - LG/Philips IPS? Sharp UV?

Mostly Sharp. 9000 series will no doubt be UV2A.

Philips is weird, it's almost like the lower the model the better it looks, 7605 looks better then 8605 and 8605 looks better then 9605

Fancy pictures are one thing but how they are in real life is something else. In my opinion you can't beat the look and feel of real glass, brushed aluminium and chrome. I like my TV to look and feel heavy not cheap and flimsy that's why I'm seduced by Philips flagship although the design is a bit rubbish this time round.

I like the glass surface at most, but im not a fan of the aluminium, it looks cheap on the Philips TV's. The front glass frame of my 9632 looks a lot more quality then the aluminium on 9604.

I don't know if the 7605 has a glass over the frame or not but from the design and the shape it looks nicer then 8605 and 9705 is just ugly.

Unlikely! Philips prefer matt anti-reflective screens and so do I - I hate gloss!

I hate full gloss screens aswell, but Philips 2009 are not matt anymore they are semi gloss like most of Sony TV's so i think they will keep the semi gloss.

Well, it looks like there will be more from Philips than I thought. LED, 200/400Hz and Ambilight, plus new Sharp panels - I think these will be UVA. My reason for saying that is the new Sharp range was announced with UV panels across the board (which might mean a price increase).

It seems that the entry level non-LED models will use IPS 1080p panels but what also surprised me was that the 5605 model has LED backlight.

Sharp announcement -
Sharp Holds Pre-CES Press Conference | SHARP

Quote:
With the 2010 International CES slated for January 7 to 10, 2010, Sharp Corporation President & COO Mikio Katayama opened by explaining three key efforts towards becoming an eco-positive company: Display Innovations, Energy Innovations, and Space Innovations.
Sharp also announced the release of the AQUOS LE920, LE820, LE810 Series LCD TVs that combine Sharp's new UV2A*2 LCD technology with its four-primary-color display that adds yellow (Y) to the three colors of red (R), green (G), and blue (B), an industry first.

Apologies if this is old news but look at the viewing angle of the new Sharp -

Wow the off angle view on these sets are awesome. Not the normal bluish wash out.
IMO that beats IPS - I don't know if the Panasonic LED models will match them for performance but that is surely a major difference from Samsung etc. If Sony and Philips are putting money into Sharp they might just retake some of the market they have lost.

Nope, no IPS panels for Philips because they broke up with LG, they will all be Sharp UV2A panels except the 37" models, they will probably be AUO like in the last two years.

Just look at the sizes 32", 40", 46", 52", this are all all UV2A, IPS is in 32", 37", 42", 47" but as i already said Philips broke up with LG so they will use old Sharp panels for this sizes.

OK, it's a regular ASV type - I just thought those sizes sounded like the older IPS ones ie. 42/47. I didn't know Philips had pulled out of LG in Korea but I suppose they have their own products to sell. I still think it will be interesting to see what differences the new UV type will bring. Personally I just looked at those sets at the wide angle and thought they looked great - no aperture or backlight contamination.

Here is a photo of the different backlights from the Philips product announcement -

- CCFL Backlight
- LED Backlight (Global dimming?)
- LED Edgelit
- LED Backlight (Local dimming)

The entry level models will be using CCFL and LED respectively, however Philips have gone for a range of LED edgelit screens in between. I imagine the basic LED model will be similar to the current Sharp panels in that it lacks local dimming.

Why did Philips break up with LG? When did this happen? IPS panels are lovely! Noooooooooooo!

@ Philips Man, can you possible rename the thread to include the 9000 series too? I think it will be a good idea to have everyone post in one place.

I utterly love my 9664 but I am intrigued by the 400Hz, 0.5ms response time of the new flagship 9000 series. I know that Sharp panels suck but if these new sets eleminate artefacts when HDNM is active then I may buy one. Throw in local dimming LED and it may be a worthy replacement for my beloved 9664

So does this mean Philips have abandoned CCFL altogether? If so, I find this utterly surprising since the 9664 was utterly one of, if not the best TV of 2009.

Philips have DEFINATELY given up CCFL this year - it will be all LED, even down to the 19" TV's. 8 & 9 series will be 3D ready as well but not shipped with glasses I believe.

No, they haven't.

That's wrong! 5605 series and upwards use LED everything else is CCFL. See my other thread: http://www.avforums.com/forums/lcd-l...tv-series.html

Philips decreased their stake a long time ago. LG-Philips became LG-Display and now they barely have any ties I believe.

8000 and 9000 series are "3D ready" so they're in the 3D section. If there are TVs from those ranges that aren't 3D then I'll rename this one to include them.

That's wrong! 5605 series and upwards use LED everything else is CCFL. See my other thread: http://www.avforums.com/forums/lcd-l...tv-series.html
That's me told then I was only going on what I was told by a Philips rep a few weeks ago in a shop. Guess he'll know more now as he's been to the launch in Barcelona this week.

Just spoken to a 'friend' of mine who just got back from the Philips launch in Barcelona - the whole UK range (3 series included) will be LED.

There will be a CCFL range available to Europe but Philips UK will NOT be taking them.

Your friend is mistaken. I've got the documentation and 3505 and 5405 are CCFL.

It won't be the 3505 or 5405 in the UK it will be 3405 in 19/22 & 26" and 5605 in 32/40 & 46" and he even showed me his lovely Philips binder he brought back with him with anticipated prices for all models

EDIT: also your thread states 5605 as range so guessing the 5405 is the CCFL range for europe.

May as well add anticipated prices while I'm here editing and already said I've seen them

19PFL3405 - £250
22PFL3405 - £300

32PFL5605 - £700
40PFL5605 - £1000

I can't believe the 8 series is priced so high for such horrid LED backlight implementation that is Edge lit! If you want a uniform panel with no backlight bleed, I guess you will have to purchase the 9705 series. Kind of makes me happy with my CCFL 9664 which has zero backlight bleed and uniform lighting at the same price as the new 8605 series.
