Re: Sony KDL-W5500 SERIES *Part 3*

Just wondering if anyone could please let me know how to use the USB device on the TV to play personal HD videos?

I've been trying for the past 3 hours converting .mkv video of my dogs kennel club gold award test to AVCHD and it doesn't seem to be working at all.

Also i've tried connecting the TV to my laptop and desktop and still nothing is working in regards to connecting the 2 and sharing my videos.

Is this just a sales gimmick or do these actually work?

Thanks

Get a DVI (pc) to HDMI (tv) cable instead of using USB then you can use the TV as a monitor and you won't have the hassle of converting files.

I've played video from a usb memory stick - stored in mpeg-1 (which rather frustratingly doesn't support widescreen)

TBH I havent tried because it seems to work OK, but I am sure you can (ECO Settings), I found it so direly implemented on my previous Sony I did turn it off.

I used ethernet to wireless connection for my 360 prior to moving and it worked fine but you will need two compatible WAP's in bridged mode. If your existing router does wireless ensure it is capable of bridging and compatible with the second WAP if you purchase a second. It would have been easier for me to use the proper 360 Microsoft offering but it was too expensive for me.

The TV is certainly capable, its really down to your home network setup

EDIT: I did wonder afterwards if you really meant, is the TV wireless capable & will it connect to your wireless router? If so, its not and so no it won't work.

here's a link to the 46w5500 - W http://www.pricerunner.jibelectrical...N-KDL46W5500-W

yes it would be a ethernet into a wireless extender. think my router can deal with it. its a linksys wag54g i think.

On older programmes there is a small border around the entire screen, then on others there is a 1cm border around the entire screen.

This is then complicated further by what upscaled resolution I use from my DVD recorder. If I send a 480P / 576P image the DVDs have no border. If I send an upscaled 1080P image, most DVDs have a border on the right.
I was initially confused by something like this with my 52" 5500. TV programmes - especially older, analogue-mastered programmes - were always made with the intention of masking off the edges of the pictures. Therefore the blanking at the edges of the picture can vary, as you would never have seen it on a "normal" domestic TV. I think the 5500 by default show the entire picture, including the blanking, but there's an option in the menu to adjust the overscan (i.e. how much you zoom the edges out). If you adjust this you should get rid of the borders.

Sorry that's all a bit vague. If I'd had a 5500 to hand, I could have given a better description.

There is a thread on here about widgets thats generating a great deal of interest between two very interested people, but the widget things on my TV I explored once when I first set the TV up and haven't been back since.

Does anyone have any settings for the 37W5500 model? I've tried various settings but cannot seem to get the black levels to anywhere near my previous tv which was a Sony 32V4500. Thanks in advance.

Cool Re: Sony KDL-W5500 SERIES *Part 3*

Hi folks!
Sorry for noob question, but it's hard to search in long threads. I have 37W5500. How do I update firmware for this TV (USB is easiest choice for me)? TV is working fine, but I would like try any new firmware. Thanks!

\\: My 37W55500 has firmware with name 1.202EA. Is there any newer firmware? I live in Europe (Czech Republic).

Re: Sony KDL-W5500 SERIES *Part 3*

Have been using the 40W5500 for about 2 weeks now and I believe the backlight bleed that was only slight to begin with at the top left corner has now almost totally gone. Its still there, but is so slight its a non-issue, and only really is visible during very dark scenes.

If the backlight was awful then I wouldn't stand for it, but its fine now on mine, not perfect, but is 95%.

I've just got a quick question for owners of this TV. Can the TV be set to Full Pixel on all inputs going into the TV like component, scart, freeview etc or is it only limited to certain inputs?

Re: Sony KDL-W5500 SERIES *Part 3*

Firstly I love the pic quality on my w5500. I rarely watch it in a dark room but while watching a movie one night with the lights out what I did notice more than anything was 2 spots of light above the Tv on the wall. Looking for bleed in the corners of the screen i could see a little, but the light spots on the wall where more annoying as they are there all the time. The light seems to come up through the top grills on the tv. Any one else find this a problem?
P.S. The TV is wall hung on a 3mt high Magnolia coloured wall.

I have matt white walls and have not noticed any light emanating from the top of the TV.

Yeh, that's exactly where its coming from, I have said this before but if light bleed is an issue for you either from the front of the panel or behind then you just can't watch LCD's in the dark.

If you do want to do so you need plasma, but you will lose detail in my opinion. I was hoping LED was the solution to this but early reports suggest not.
Why an earth they can't sort this out is beyond me. A friend of mine called me to say he was relieved to say his new LCD was bleed free. When I went round to see, it was worse than mine, it just doesn't bother some people and some are worse than others, but I have still to see one with none.

Fook me, we go from simple backlight bleed to W5500's illuminating the wall. It beggars belief.
My own wall mounted 46W5500 does not illuminate my matt white 3m wall at all.

Re: Sony KDL-W5500 SERIES *Part 3*

Well in my opinion plasma (Panasonic is all I have seen) just doesn’t have the same level of detail then my W series Sony LCD. Me and my mate spent most of last summer debating which one to buy and we ended up buying both.

Fact is in my opinion mine has better detailed picture his has no bleed and looks better in the dark.
LCD/LED has to be the way forward bot until they solve the backlight issue, plasma fans will always have a good argument

Re: Sony KDL-W5500 SERIES *Part 3*

Hi,

I got my 46w5500 last week and with some tweaking I thought it was perfect.

However today I bought a BDPS350 and treated myself to some blu ray action.
Then as I dimmed the light and but in to theatre mode I realised how bad the clouding and baclight bleed was. It felt like there were 2 spotlights shining in the corner of the theatre that was my tv.

My question is this:

Has anyone successfully returned their set (bought mine from a sony centre) and managed to get a replacement model with no bleeding or clouding of the backlight?
Is this something you just have to live with or are there sets out there that have no bleed???

Everyone talks about the lottery, it seems right now you are far more likely to get a faulty one than not. I really don't want to go through 5 returns before I get one I'm happy with.

Would really appreciate a successful return story at this point!

It's hard to define really bad.

Today i had my blinds closed and the lights out, however was unable to get it properly dark and unable to replicate it.

However in complete darkness, it was always noticeable, especially in the dark scenes of the movie (which there was a lot of, the BD was Sunshine that is set in space!)
It was so noticeable that half way through the film i had to stop because all i could think about was whether i needed to return my set or not and jumped on the AVF.

If you do most of your watching during the day you won't notice it, but if like me the idea of recreating a cinema atmosphere appeals then it will drive you crazy.

I'm going to phone my friend at Sony (i worked for them for 4 years as a trainer) and my mate at the Sony Centre to see if it is a known issue and what if anything can be done

Try this.....
Sony KDL40W5500 Settings: Best Picture After Calibration

But at the end of the day settings may vary fron tv to tv,very much individual taste.
I found the SD quality quiet variable on cable.

I don't have this problem, but my TV is not mounted flat against the wall - it's standing across a corner.

However, if I peer down through the ventilation slots in the top of the TV, I can see bright, white light shining up at me - so I can see how it might be a problem if close enough to a white wall.....

This is exactly the problem. When you look down into the top of the TV 2 big white lights shining up through the vents. Not sure if it was in every scene in the movie as I went and turned the lights back up a bit.
The way some people have reacted almost in disbelief has suprised me, just as I was suprised to see 2 extra wall lights in my room. Surely I am not the first to post this??
If I can recreate it I will post a picture.

Re: Sony KDL-W5500 SERIES *Part 3*

Does the effectiveness of upscaling a 480p signal vary if you use other connections?
To be more precise: if you feed the tv a 480p signal through component and through scart, will you see mayor differences? Is it bad with the component cconnection?

Thanks in advance
