Sony Bravia - Poor Picture Quality

Hi, my family just bought a new tv, Sony Bravia, well its massive lol. Im not familiar with TV Settings, the problem is that the picture is quite poor, before this we had a 26inch Sony CRT TV, and the picture was perfect. But its quite poor in this new Sony Bravia, does anyone know good settings so i could get better picture?

CRTs are generally better for SD viewing as they do not need to "stretch" the picture

You should be able to get a very good picture from that.

What SD source is giving poor pictures? Inbuilt Freeview, Sky, Cable, Freeview PVR, DVD, or what?

Also look at the main threads for the 40V4000 and copy the settings used by other owners. Particularly reduce sharpness and turn off any noise reduction or picture "enhancement" settings

LCD's and Plasma's are going to enhance the anomalies and artifacts in SD sources making the picture look not as good as on a CRT TV. I have a 26" Sony CRT and SD looks far better on it then on my 26" Samsung LCD or 32" Sony LCD. It doesn't bother me as it's still respectable especially on the Sony LCD and it doesn't really bother me. It's a compromise I made in order to have HD for my game consoles and blu-ray's/HD-DVD's.

Not really

Why do they always look worse? CRT is an old technology and plasma lcd newer, so they should be better?
Even lcds look worse than their same size crt

Plasma's handle SD source material pretty well but LCD's do not. LCD's and to an extent Plasma's are designed for HD source material and not SD. Because of the technology used and the fact that they are designed for HD primarily means that SD won't look as good.

Some Plasmas and LCDs are better then others depending on how well they scale the image. My Samsung is pretty poor with SD but my Sony is pretty good. Then again the Samsung is a 4 year old 26" model and the Sony is a brand new 32" model. At the end of the day don't expect SD quality as good as CRT on a Plasma or LCD especially on an LCD.

I only have Set Top Box and a DVD Player Connected to it, I change to AV1 Source to watch Set Top Box and, i have to press Power Button of my DVD Player to turn it On but it automatically shows up on TV. But i have a problem, i cannot see the Picture of DVD, there are two Scart Lead Port at the back of TV, so i have to Swap them around to watch DVD.

I have also bought this Scart Lead Extension, its like a 3 Scarts in One small Box, but when Turn on DVD, i see lines in the Screen

PS: Is there any way i can watch Set Top Box and TV in High Definition?

Firstly I assume that you are posting not as a moderator as I do not wish to be pilloried for criticising a moderator of this forum.

I regret I disagree. There are several factors in how an LCD or Plasma will present an SD source. It is always said that plasmas are better at SD but IMHO this is due to a "soft" picture presentation which to me defeats the object.

The major factors in SD presentation are (in order) source bit-rate, capability of the upscaler and other picture enhancements. Given the right combination IMHO the LCD wins hands down as it will on any decent HD source.

The Sony KDL-V4000 models have all been replaced. We have the KDL-40V4000 in the lounge and it's a very nice tv.

I know. Saw the stylish 32" version. Why did sony replace these great sets with some new, very expensive ones that suffer from backlight bleed?

Im sorry but I have to jump in when such a statement is made.

Moderators dont get any special leverage with their opinions over others' opinions. Its pretty unfair to the ethos of a forum to retract your (fair) criticism of a moderator's opinion just because they are a moderator.

Moderators (especially those posting within forum sections that they dont personally moderate themselves) are treated as any other member in board discussions.
