Only changes are:
Contrast Ratio
Extra HDMI Port
Design of the TV
Regarding mkv, and media files:
I've tried the instructions in the first post, but did not find any Wiselink Menu options
The firmware of both 550 and 530 seems to be same in the US site.
the firmware in the UK site is however more upto date and bigger in size than that in the US.
Could someone with a B550(with working USB video/mkv) please tell the firmware in your TV, and your location.
Cheers |

I cant decide on this model or the LE40B650, but not sure if the extra cost will be worth it because im not too bothered about the 100hz, and the internet connectivity etc etc the LE40B650 has to offer.
Basically just wanna know if this is a decent enough model which offers good PQ for SD freeview, PS3 & Blu Ray?
Any responses would be much apprieciated.
Cheers | I'm pleased with the tv.
Even though i have a V+ box for my tv watching, i have tested the freeview pic and have found it to be pretty good.
I watched starship troopers(bbc1)on it and found it looked slightly clearer than my upscaled V+ box pic on the same movie.
One thing though, if you put digital noise reduction on during freeview, it causes a slight wobble on certain background objects and on facial features of people(it's a bit weird).
There's not too much noise on the freeview pic anyway, so i'd leave it off.
The pic on my ps3 and 360 is fantastic. The text on the ps3 dashboard looks incredibly vibrant and sharp(certainly compared to my last samsung hdtv).
Game mode is recommended though when playing consoles on it, it's definitely smoother with it on.
I use my pc on it via the hdmi/dvi cable as well, disappointly it doesn't seem to support pixel mapping over pc hdmi(not on my radeon 4870 card anyway).
So the text on the desktop isn't as sharp as it should be, but it looks a treat on full screen games i must admit.
The vga dsub port does pixel mapping at 1920x1080 though, so the text for desktop usage is clearer there(hdmi cable looks better for gaming though, much more sharper).
It's great as a gaming pc monitor, but it's not ideal for using web pages on over pc hdmi.
I like the tv, even the speakers aren't half bad.. I'd give it 8\9 out of 10.
Edit: i found out you can get pixel mapping on the pc over hdmi... you select screen fit and turn off all overscan, works fine then(i had 16.9 selected).

Hey guys,
I'm in the US and have a 37B550 and 40B530. Since the north American version of the B550 and B530 don't have the WISELINK options available, I'm wondering if anyone knows what would happen if I tried to flash the UK firmware on my USA TV? Would it brick the unit, or would it work and give me the ability to enable video playback?

I'd guess the tv wouldn't accept the flash, there must be some kind of basic check on the file is the relevant type. However I wouldn't recommend you try it incase it does brick your set!

if anyones interested the service manual for the b550 is on manuals paradise, its under the american model number, ln40b550 you have to pay though......
i wonder if it has explanations of the service menu because i think that the b550 and the b630 are the same tv, with different features switched off.

Hi many thanks for this great thread, got my LE37B550 yesterday as a warranty replacement for a LE37A556P.
All I can say is I am glad that my old TV broke as the B550 is far superior, much better Sound from the Built in speakers, Clearer/Sharper picture, better design. The Freeview is much quicker when changing channels and the menus are nicer on the eye.
The Picture Quality When using the PS3 is mind blowing The XMB on the PS3 is so crisp and the Icons stand out so well.
I updated the Firmware straight away to FM/200906/20090625140635000/T-CHL5DEUC.exe (size : 26863 KBytes / updated : 2009-06-25) and using the guide on the first page to enter the Installer Menu, activated the options to play Divx and MKV.
I always watch movies on my PS3 in Divx format but the PS3's Jet Engine sounding fan always annoyed me when it kicks in, so im glad I wont have to put up with that anymore.
So far the TV has played every file I have thrown at it although I dont have an external AMP so I am using the Program from the Post on Page five to convert the Audio which seems easy enough and only takes 2-3 Minutes to complete.
So in all im well chuffed !!

Anyone had voice sync problems with any files? A particular group of files I have are encoded with xvid & 0x0055(MP3) ID'd as MPEG-1 Layer 3 have this problem. Plays fine on a PC via VLC, but no good direct via tv. Any ideas?

Hi guys.
When you enable media player on the 550 is the media player interface the same as the 650? i mean can you scroll forward/ rewind and pause etc on the xvids/movies you play from the USB device?

Ok so I finally have MKV's and Divx's working on my LE40B550, flawlessly I might add - here's how:
1 - Enter the Service Menu (when in standby press press info, menu, mute then standby)
2 - Enter 'Control' option
3 - Enter 'Sub Option'
4 - Turn on WISELINK MOVIE, WISELINK WRITE & HIGH DEVI
5 - Press Standby
Sorted! thanks to reddish75 for finding the wiselink option (this allowed divx's but not MKV's), all I did was enable 'high devi' and 'wiselink' write So why would they include this in the hardware and not enable it hmmm that's odd (it's clearly not struggling to play the MKV's at all 1280 x 720)
Firmware I'm using is latest (check samsung site, ends 1008)
What a nice surprise people should know about this!! |
It's simple marketing in this case making the B650 more valuable and therefore getting more money, make someting possible in software or in this case impossible in soft ware and charge to make it possible , or straight to the point it's all about money.

Guys, out of interest how is the responsiveness of the B550's GUI and menu system (if possible compared to the B650's?)
I've found the 650's to be quite 'sticky' and unresponsive sometimes. Since my set is faulty, of course i'm wondering whether I return it but get the 550 instead. (I thought some of the 650's unresponsiveness might be down to the bloat with all the internet and widgets stuff.)
Thankyou
