Re: 1080 p lcd tv as a computer monitor ?
I have a Samsung 40" tv and have been using it as a computer monitor for the past year - it is so good I would never go back to an ordinary computer monitor. I have it connected to a Dell laptop and use a wireless keyboard and mouse. At a resolution of 1080p I use the zoom function of the browser as text is too small at the default size on web pages - would be OK if I sat closer.
My laptop is quite old and so I have to use the vga input on the tv. As the Dell doesn't support 1920 x 1080 as standard I use Powerstrip to give me this resolution in win xp. If you have a more modern pc you could probably use dvi to hdmi or hdmi to hdmi and not have this problem.
Good luck

Re: 1080 p lcd tv as a computer monitor ?
Hi mate,
I use a Samsung LE52F96BD as my monitor in the front room (52" 1080p) and have no problems at all, the picture is crystal clear with no scanning issues or anything else. I sometimes have to increase text size with some web pages (as I sit 10ft or so away from the screen) but thats not an issue. I set my graphics card to 720 @ 50/60Htz (ATI 3650 HD card) for normal PC usage (this increases the size of icons) and set it to 1080p/24Htz when I'm watching HD/Blu-Ray from the HD/Blu-Ray drive or *legally* downloaded films.... I use a DVI-HDMI adapter for picture and a seperate phono lead for basic sound. I also have a wireless keyboard/mouse to limit clutter in the front room and clone a second screen in the spare room (19" no-make screen).
I couldn't be happier with this set up to be honest and I don't see any trade off with using my TV as a monitor, if anything it brings a lot of benefits. You may want to check that there are no known issues with using Sony's as monitors (I don't know of any). I assume you have an LCD 3/4000??
I hope that helps and if you have any particular query about my set up let me know.
Ashley

Have you tried 1280x720, if not, could you? and let me know what it is like quality wise..?? Im thinking of 1080p screen as they are not much more expensive than the hd ready screens I was looking at, but that res woul dbe way too small for my bad eyesight...
Which sammy do you have?
Thanks

Re: 1080 p lcd tv as a computer monitor ?
Hi
My Samsung is the LE40M8. I can use 1280x1024 - this is supported by the Dell, and it looks pretty good. In fact if I'm using word I often switch to this resolution, then in excel I put back to 1920x1080 to give me more space to work with. Zooming in the browser (Firefox or IE7) is no problem - use Ctrl and the mouse wheel. Picture is softer in 1280 x 1024, but still good.

Re: 1080 p lcd tv as a computer monitor ?
Sorry - misread your post - yes I can use 1280x768, but doesn't look as good. I think it might look better on a set designed for 768, but I think it is worth to go and get a set that supports 1080p.

Not the best pics but...
1080p
720p
It doesnt look it but the text is very sharp and readable at both 1080 and 720p

Re: 1080 p lcd tv as a computer monitor ?
Yes it very good gaming if you set 1920x1080 @60mhz (1080p) as I used plug from PC to Samsung F86 40" - it very clean and much wider, I set my tv as Just Scan as it prefect size - very smooth and very colourful
