Philips 42PFL5522
Picked up one of these at the weekend. Was trying to convince the wife into spending a little more to get a 1080p set for "future proofing"
Anyway I got it home, read a bit of the manual, said that it supports up to 1080i via HDIM, ok I thought, probably won't notice the difference ona 42" tv anyway.
But!
When I hooked up my PS3 via HDMI and set it to autodetect the best settings it picked 1080p surley this is wrong? Running games at 1080p (RR&) is amazing
Anyone else noticed this? is it 1080p compatible? or should I downgrade it to 720p? I won't damage my TV running at 1080p will I?
P.S - Cracking TV, very very very impressed! No blur, ghosting or anything, performs like a trooper in SD too.

Re: Philips 42PFL5522
No, its not, according to the philips site you linked to. But it will accept a 1080p signal and then downscale it to the panels native resolution.

Re: Philips 42PFL5522
So technically is it better to run at 1080p and let it downscale or run at 720p?

Try both, see what you like the look of best and stick with it. Dont get too wrapped up in the technicalities. Only you can decide what you prefer.

Re: Philips 42PFL5522
Hi sorry to hijack your thread, hope you dont mind.
I bought 1 of these from currys yesterday and I have to say it is a cracking set, but 1 thing I did notice is that when the screen is black you can see the backlight shining through the corners of the screen, well 3 corners, so instead of it being pure black the corners are a light black.
When a picture is showing the picture is perfect, Should I be worried about this, or is it normal to have some light showing through.
Thanks for any advice
Pete

Re: Philips 42PFL5522
Has anyone seen a review for this set yet?
I've seen it in CostCo for £740 and am thinking of buying it but would like to read some reviews before I do.

Re: Philips 42PFL5522
So can anyone with this set take some pictures of it in action, and give some more indepth comments?
I am particularly interested in it for its capacity of a high definition gaming teleivision to reduce blur and imaging problems with my current Dell tv at 16ms response.
Anyone here got an xbox 360 or ps3 hooked up to it who can share their gaming experiences?
I saw this tv on display in comet today however its ran off a weak signal from an aerial by the looks so its impossible to judge the picture quality accurately
Many thanks for anyone who can offer thoughts / advice / pictures.

Re: Philips 42PFL5522
My xbox 360 looks great on this set, only slight weird thing is when i'm on the xbox dashboard it occasionally switches itself into 'movie expand' mode or similar, any ideas? Is it because i bought a cheap component lead off ebay for it?

Re: Philips 42PFL5522
Help someone!
Its a tossup for me between this philips set and the SAMSUNG PS42Q97HDX
Main use will be for gaming and watching dvds upscaled.
Am looking to reduce motion blur and get a good picture.
The philips looks nice and has the 5ms response, however reviews state that the samsung also handles motion well.
Looking around it seems people are having issues with lines appearing on the samsung, and it has a lower resolution than the philips panel.
Can anyone offer me some advice?
I've managed to get the Philips down to 709 for collection at my local store, but would like some feedback on how well it handles motion and how good the picture quality is.
Advice ASAP would be appreciated by any forum member

Re: Philips 42PFL5522
Its a cracking set, I do have some issues though, the manual says the highest resolution on a pc is 1024 x 768, I was hoping to use the native resolution of 1366, it will accept a higher resolution but the text starts looking funny, any ideas of a way to get around this. (Maybe theres a setting or a driver that I dont know about).
Also on the pc if you have got a bright red text on a gray background, the red bleeds into the gray. (which may happen on other LCDs, I`m a novice and dont really know much about LCD`s but I`m learning )
Other than the above I`m very happy with it
Anybody been able to register it online for the guarrentee??
PS looks awesome playing test drive unlimited on the PC, Playing DVD`s from the PC looks awesome too
Cheers
Pete

Re: Philips 42PFL5522
Thanks guys who have replied so far, how do you find it handles motion in particular?
I play test drive unlimited on the xbox 360 and i find it a nightmare at the moment as my current tv has 16ms response and it consistently blurs, particularly when scrolling the island map, and panning the camera around the car and when travelling at fast speed..
I take it the philips with 5ms response is very good at handling motion?
How do you feel the picture quality is? Any better / worse than other lcd's you've seen?
Finally, what kind of settings are there to play with , can you adjust the backlight, and turn stuff like pixel plus etc on and off?
Many thanks, you're certainly making such a hard decision much easier

Re: Philips 42PFL5522
I see no motion blur at all, the picture is stunning, colours are vibrant and the picture is sharp.
As far as I can tell you can`t adjust the backlight, you can turn the pixel plus on and off, but not when your watching via hdmi, It will only let you adjust contrast, brightness, and colour temp.
Via the freeview, scart etc, you can adjust the picture settings, soft, natural, rich etc. also via scart and hdmi you can change the aspect ratio, it gives you a good list.
Have a look on the philips website you can download the manual and have a scan to see the specs and what settings you can mess with
Hope that helps
Pete
