download speed dropped since i got new laptop

Hi, i have just purchased a new laptop and it was very easy and straight forward when it came to setting up with my wireless router , however i downloaded aol vr9 and it took at least 45 mins . I thought nothing of it untill tonight when i tried to download a update for a programe which was only 5mb it was showing 3/5 kbs a second and aprox 27mins to download. I am on broadband and when i downloaded previousley it never took this long i have changed no settings on the router and i can surf the net at a good speed . Could anyone help . Thanks

Re: download speed dropped since i got new laptop

The speeds are not unreasonable unless you're expecting more from your provider?

Re: download speed dropped since i got new laptop

It could be a problem with the time of day (lots of people taking up the bandwidth), maybe the server at the other end, windows downloading an update in the background etc. When you signed up for broadband they'll have told you the download speed you should have...?

Re: download speed dropped since i got new laptop

This is why ISP always states “up to 2meg/10meg broadband” etc, like mentioned this depends on differing factors, time of day etc.

Use something like Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test

This will give you a safe indication of your up/download speeds. If you still find that things are not as they should be, check your WiFi card has the latest drivers (just so you can tick it off the list).

I myself am on 10meg from Virgin and get download speeds from 620mbs down to as little as 5kbs depending on who I am downloading from. Don’t forget that the speed does not just depend on your download capability but there upload speed and bandwidth. These can dramatically differ between times of day, also like just mentioned, if you’re running something in the back ground like updates. (This is a strong possibility with you just starting out with a new laptop) Windows up-dates can really slow things down till there complete. Vista SP1 is a good example of this.

Re: download speed dropped since i got new laptop

What application are you using to download.

If it's a torrent client I had some slow download issues on a new Vista install with bittorrent, no matter what client I used.

There are various posts and fixes regarding slow downloads on vista, use google to search for 'vista slow download' or 'vista slow torrent' etc.

Here's a couple of suggestions
