The Killzone 2 Controls Poll (With Poll)

View Poll Results: Which option best describes your feeling about the controls?
It's no different than getting used to any other new FPS 60 37.97%
It took a while, but now I'm used to them 30 18.99%
I'm still not sure, so I'll sit on the fence 19 12.03%
I just can't seem to get used to them, however much I play 35 22.15%

Yep, that's right - they've all turned into arguments about the controls. The very same people reiterate the same arguments to each other over and over again, and I don't know about you but I for one am getting damn sick of reading the same thing over and over again.

All the opinions anyone could possibly make are in the first thread above at least five times, so lets have a poll once and for all to finish the discussion.

PLEASE ONLY VOTE ONCE YOU HAVE GIVEN THE RETAIL VERSION OF THE GAME AT LEAST A FEW HOURS OF YOUR TIME

I still stuggle with them, but I am trying to keep at it. (I never played COD4 on PS3 so can't use that excuse). I struggle with FPS generally on DS.

Never had an issue with the controls in full game or demo and never will its not cod4 move on and and on with it.

No problems here .

Like all other FPS games its just the usual move the crosshairs and shoot when someones in them.

Didn't vote, as none of those options really seem to fit my feelings on the controls ...

An option of something like ...

"I can use the controls as well as anyone else - but I can also see how they could have been a lot tighter"

... is probably about close to what I think of them at the moment.

The first one was supposed to mean you adjusted no problems (and probably wouldn't have even thought there was an issue if you hadn't read it on the internet), while the second one was supposed to mean, it took a while to get used to them as they are noticably different to other games, but you can still play the game just fine now that you've got used to the differences.

I'm sure you can imagine getting the wording right is tricky, hence why the original poll timed out

That's supposed to be option 2. If the controls are usable and you can play the game, but they didn't seem to be as natural to you as other FPSs.

I didn't really want to bring preference or "ideal" controls into it because nobody would agree, and I didn't want to have options like "the controls are okay except I want toggle cover", because that's not really usability, just preference. The poll is supposed to be whether you can actually play the game or not. Another way to look at it is:

1) I played the game fine from the off
2) I'm playing the game fine now but it took a while to adjust
3) I'm don't know which of 2) or 4) applies yet
4) I'm still ploughing onwards but the controls still seem to be making things hard
5) I've stopped playing the game because of the controls

I guess. It's not academic research after all

So you can use the controls, so that's either option 2 or 1 depending on how long it took you to adjust. The second half of your sentence isn't relevant to this poll. It's whether the controls are usable or not and you say that they are

Yeah that's what I thought it meant, just wanted to point it out in a nice way that they could both mean the same. Can understand it's tricky to fit full description into only a few words, also with 120 secs time constraint.

Bit like Krypton Factor.

Top option for me. No different to learning the controls on any other game imo. I notice Call of Duty mentioned a lot in these threads and I for one like the way they have gone a different route compared to Cod as the last thing I wanted from Killzone was another Cod.

I'd be very dissapointed if they changed the controls in any way.

I went for "I just can't seem to get used to them, however much I play".

Which isn't strictly true as i have got used to them..... BUT that doesn't make them good, they're still unresponsive and the general weight effect makes it feel like your character has had a 12 pack before each mission.

There should be a option "I've got used to them, but the controls still suck" IMO

Still a good game though.

I'm still crap and will always be crap at FPS, KZ2 is no different. Doesn't matter how the controls are. Anyone seen me playing can vouch for it

here's my opinion after half a week properly playing it online:

you get used to the controls the more you play - but i'm still on the fence (I chose that in the poll) about if this is something we should be expected to do. I've never in my knowledge had to adapt to the way a game controls. I've had to adapt to the way a game plays, but not controls...

Setting the sensitivity to low lets you aim much better but at the cost of having a turning circle the size of an artic lorry.

Guerilla probably did this on purpose for realism (quite why a space marine can't turn full circle in less than 5 seconds is beyond me really ), but everytime I play it I can't help wondering if the experience would be better if the deadzone and sensitivity matched that of the call of duty games/resistance.

The only positive I can think about them is that when you're trying to avoid an enemy, strafing and running from side to side seems to make you much harder for the enemy to hit - mainly becuase of how difficult it is to aim accurately.

I can't understand how anyone would dismiss the game entirely and sell it/not play it just becuase of the controls though - For instance, i have a hard time believing all these ardent cod4 ninjas don't have enough dexterity to control it at all......

Despite all that, i'm having a hell of a lot of fun with killzone 2, and I think it's a game i'll play for a long time irrespective of if guerilla decide to issue a patch to solve this 'problem'

I agree with a lot of what you say but as many before you, you let yourself down a bit by mentioning 'realism'.

You can't tick the realism box in one paragraph and then in the next mention strafing and running side to side whilst firing. I'm not sure if these tactics are in any army manual. I've not even mentioned how many hits it takes to kill neither.

Please leave the realism debate out of FPSs.

I think there is a distinction between controls as in which buttons you press and the responsiveness / movement issues.

For me the latter adds to the game as you don't get those silly 'dance offs' you see on COD in close quarter combat.

In terms of button mapping I have adapted to the standard settings but still not keen on R3 for zoom. They should have let you map your own.
