Re: DTS Sound

Yep, DTS here as well. Remember, it is not a pre-recorded soundtrack like a DVD. It is generated on the fly so the sound can be generated based on your audio settings on the PS3.

I dont understand how you mean its generated on the fly, surely the game is made and everything is recorded like a dvd?

Its exactly the same as pre recorded dvd, only depending what settings you have it will play back in that, the game is pcm lossless format for anyone with a new amp that can decode the latest uncompressed sound formats, (Dts master, True hd and pcm) and the best sounding game ever made imho.

The music in the sp game changes based on what is happening on screen, think its called an adaptive soundtrack, thats what he means

Re: DTS Sound

Thanks Tall_Paul,
That's exactly what I mean. DTS DVDs contain a DTS soundtrack and an AC3 5.1 soundtrack. The game has neither of those. The sounds are "probably" linear PCM and the sounds are positioned and live mixed together and then encoded into the best output your system can handle, in our case DTS.

The sound is spectacular - so immersive.

Re: DTS Sound

There is something very strange going on with the sound from this game. I have it playing in DTS through my amp and it works fine but if I pause the game and leave it for a few seconds on the menu screen the fan starts up in my amp!. I have never even heard that fan run before, ever. As soon as I return to the game the fan stops again!. Its really strange, the only time that fun should run is if I were to play music very loud for a long period of time so the amp overheats. No game, movie or music has ever made my amp do this. It is 100% reproducable too, every time I pause the game for a few seconds my amp turns into an xbox 360 wind tunnel.

Re: DTS Sound

Does it have a DTS HD MA soundtrack? or just plain DTS?

If DTS HD MA - how can you tell? Normally I select display when watching a BR movie and that states what soundtrack it is. Don't think this works with games? or am I missing something?

Thanks

Re: DTS Sound

It would be pointless using DTS HD MA in a game (except intros and cut scenes maybe). It uses LPCM. The PS3 can't output DTS HD MA anyway, it decodes it to bit perfect LPCM and outputs that.
As I said earlier, it mixes all the sounds together based on what is happening on screen. It then encodes and shoves this out at the best quality option it knows that your system supports.
eg. HDMI -> Linear PCM
Optical -> DTS or AC3 or Stereo
Analogue -> Stereo

The sound is amazing. Gives you a rush. Had a moment where i dodged a sniper bullet. I literally saw and heard the bullet whoosh by the side of my head. I was floored. The immersion is off the scale.

Re: DTS Sound

As said on another thread, if you set the optical output to DTS on the PS3, I get no surround sound with my Panasonic all in one? It works fine on Dolby Digital and AAC. Do you think it has to be a full on HD decoder to have the optical DTS work? Or it only works through HDMI?

Re: DTS Sound

Your panasonic system can't decode dts over optical. You can only get dd or stereo with that system. You'll find the same problem with dts blu rays and dvd's.

Aow, why does it say DTS on the surround system? Some games work with it set to DTS and all the other options on line Dolby Digital but KZ2 won't? I'm confused.com

Re: DTS Sound

AFAIK, panasonic all in ones don't support dts over optical - just going from memory, i've seen it come up before... You'll either get dd, or if the only option is dts, you'll need to send pcm to your system (ie stereo, as pcm over optical is stereo), and use prologic.

Shouldn't be a problem with this game as you can use dd, so you will get surround sound from it.

I think you need to use custom ps3 sound settings and select dd and 2ch pcm, but not dts.

Do a search on "panasonic optical dts" in the all in ones forum, you'll find more info there IIRC.

I suspect it's an issue with your Panasonic all in one system as opposed to the game. I have DTS and DD checked in the sound settings on the PS3 and DTS works fine for me. My amp is able decode DTS though. As already mentioned your all in one surround system probably can't.

It is strange that the game itself defaults to DTS as opposed to it being an option in the game's sound settings. My understanding is that if you try an output DTS through a system that does not support it whether it be DVDs, blu-rays or games it's a risk as it can damage the equipment.

Haha thanks guy's, learn something new ever day
I looked in the instruction manual for my Panasonic system and can confirm that through optical the system will indead decode Dolby Digital and PCM ONLY. I think it just reads DTS disks like DVD films and output's DTS on the HDMI connection.
I also read that the optical port doesn't support the PCM 88.2khz and 175.4khz frequency's I've been using

So I had a play and as I said the Panasonic system only decodes from the PS3 the Dolby Digital signal or the default PCM signals which it uses Dolby Pro Logic 2 for. AAC does nothing.
So I know I just leave it on Dolby D from now on so a massive thank you as I was just switching everything on in the PS3 menu, however as said, why the hell do some games work like this and output Dolby D automatically and some don't like KZ2? And why does the PS3 menu output PCM only? I can tell cause it's always on Dolby PL2 on the amp when in the PS3 X bar menu?

The ps3 xmb is just stereo - hence the 2ch pcm output for it. Glad you got it sorted fella.

MY amp is a panasonic and works fine with DTS. When I say fine I mean except for the strange fan running in amp when I pause KZ2 ( see my post on page 1 of this thread ). DTS does work though, from whatever sauce I use.

There is a difference between amps and all in ones though. Amps generally have more features and options as well as more connectivity then all in one systems.

Re: DTS Sound

Hmmm... I have a problem with the sound in Killzone 2.

There is NO bass. Explosions, gunfire etc sound really tinny with no bass to them. If i turn the sub up on the amp the sound just gets muffled not bassier. The demo is the same.

I have the Sony HTSF1300 and its fine in other games. I'm connected via HDMI. I've tried linear PCM, DTS, Dolby digital, it's the same thing across them all for this game

Compression is NOT turned on, in the PS3 or the Amp.

Any ideas?? it's putting me off playing the game, it sounds so bad.

The HTSF1300 does do DTS and it works fine in other games. It's not a DTS specific problem with this game, this thread just seemed the most relevant place to ask

that system accepts LPCM over hdmi (hd audio from ps3) as well as decodes dd and dts. You already know that but i'm just clarifying!

So i'd say keep it set to output LPCM over hdmi, and double check "dynamic range control" is off in ps3 video settings. I know you said compression is off, i'm just going through what i'd check myself.

Check "comp off" is displayed in your amp menu.

Redo your ps3 sound settings - use auto.

Re-calibrate your amp - did you use auto-cal? It can be a bit hit and miss.

If it's just this game, perhaps it's a setting within the game itself?

Re: DTS Sound

Thanks for the reply, but yeah I've checked those things :s

I'm wondering if it's something to do with Killzone 2 having 7.1 audio support where as most games don't, as I'm only seeing the problem with this game.

I do not have 7.1 options checked in my PS3 sound settings though, so can't see how it could be that really.

There are no audio options in the game

Re: DTS Sound

I wouldn't have thought it'd be that - i have the 1200 which is virtually identical, and WipEout HD has 7.1ch support - no problems with that, or the Killzone2 demo on mine...

Does seem like it's specific to this game for you, which is a puzzler. Besides checking and redoing your audio settings in both the ps3 and the amp i'm not sure what else it might be, especially if it doesn't have in-game audio options...

sounds like you've done custom sound settings with your ps3- i'd recommend just trying auto if you haven't already, sometimes things can be left unticked which can cause problems.
