What do you think of Killzone 2?

I don't normally post this kind of thing and never really take note of polls, but I am intreagued to see what peoples first impressions are now that Killzone has finally arrived.

Personally.. I have to admit that I am underwhelmed I didn't want to admit this to myself as I so want to like it, but after a few hours play (MP) last night, I came to the conclusion that I don't! Perhaps it will grow on me, but right now, I am not enjoying it...

I am afraid to say this, but I am surely not the only one to think it.. Its just not Call Of Duty... I know its not ment to be.. But Call Of Duty gripped me from the start and drew me in and made me keep playing.. It just has a perfect balance.. In contrast, I am finding KZ MP a chore!

I don't like the fact that the controls aren't as sharp.. I don't like the fact that you have to shoot the enemy loads of times to kill them.. And I know its stupid, but I really miss the feeling you get when you see +10 or +20 appear on the screen (a-la COD).. I just don't get excited when I kill someone like I do in COD.. I just feel some what 'disconnected'...

I know I am sounding like a troll and its not ment to be like this.. I was hopeful that KZ would bring something new.. But for me, its just not working.....

What do others think? I have setup a poll (my first time so bear with me) so we what peoples thoughts are...

Jon

You're not trolling, but you seem a bit confused there because on the one hand, you say its not COD4 (thank god imho) but then you say you hoped KZ would bring something new?

I think with all the hype this game has got, there are going to be loads of people who feel underwhelmed, but I do not think that's the games fault.

Re: What do you think of Killzone 2?

Becuase cod (4) was such a groundbreaking online title, there are always going to be people who want to see an evolution of the features introduced in that game.

KZ2 does things differently, and if it's not your cup of tea that's fine as there's new COD games on the horizon

I'm interested to see how or if guerilla address the controls as regardless of your view it's obviously an issue.

Personally i'm disgusted that a totally configuarable control method isn't implemented in a game of this calibre. The reason console games are seen as being 'dumbed down' is becuase they are, in this way at least.

Re: What do you think of Killzone 2?

What gets me with the whole killzone 2 thing is honestly no matter what it brought to the table people would complain.

Killzone isn't like game x would get you:

Why couldn't killzone do this like game x, game x has this, game x doesn't have that, game x does that much better.

Killzone is just like game x would get you:

Killzone copied that from game x, killzone is so unoriginal, killzone is a poor mans game x.

I get the feeling that even if killzone came with a wad of £50s in the case, you'd get someone saying they wish it was twentys.

Given all the hype about it. It was never going to match up to some peoples expectations. Having played the beta I kind of new what we were getting. Which was the best looking console shooter with a good multiplayer and great clan options.

Re: What do you think of Killzone 2?

I knew I would regret comparing it to COD.. But we have to accept that the majority of people who buy/play KZ would have played (and probably loved) COD ....

COD was the very first on-line game I played and from the VERY first game, I was hooked.. It did everything so well.. it just drew you in.

With KZ, I am finding almost every aspect of it annoying.. The controls are heavy.. You have to shoot the enemy too many times... I just can't put my finger on it.. I just don't feel that I am 'interacting' with real people and I don't get a 'buzz' when I manage to kill someone.

It just feels completely wrong (for me) and the danger is that a lot of people might feel the same way and just go straight back to COD...

I am not giving up yet.. But even last night (when KZ should have been new and fresh) I found myself resisting the urge to put COD:WAW in, just so that I didn't go to bed feeling so frustrated..... Sad but true!!

I got news for you. It wasn't. It's been the same old re-spawn-athon since day one on the PC. All they done was to make the 'perks' perpetual rather than a game by games basis. Thats it. Hardly genre defining/ground breaking now is it.

I love CoD (or used to) but I'm getting fed-up with all the comparisons against it as if it's the 2nd coming of Christ. People like it because it makes them look good as every dog can have their day. End of.

Re: What do you think of Killzone 2?

I like it.

It's no CoD but if you stop trying to play it like CoD it's a really good game imo. I like the clunkiness/heaviness of the controls tbh, it feels like you're hulking around a big gun with lots of armour on etc. CoD is very smooth and floaty but thats not very realistic you could say. They're just two different styles.

I like it anyway and i'll be playing this for a long time I reckon. I also reckon it could be a grower for people. Thats if the servers get up before people start selling it.

Re: What do you think of Killzone 2?

You're always going to have a problem with expectation vs reality. Every game has it, and no game suits everyone. The fact it is different to CoD is a bonus in my book, and not because CoD isn't a brilliant game (because it is), but because diversity suits everyone and everyone then has something to play.

I like the sound of the MP myself, more shots to kill may provide for a different strategy, and the stats tracking/unlocks seem top class. I can't wait to dive in at the weekend myself, but I don't think I'll have unrealistic expectations as it's obviously not "broken", just perhaps not to some people's taste.

I'm going to wait until I've completed the SP and played the MP for a month before voting.

Well you do get used to certain controls and I'm certainly not criticising you for not liking it. Its your prerogative obviously. It is a different type of shooter to COD4 it is slower by design, its designed to be more tactical and it has a much superior community aspect to it.

Re: What do you think of Killzone 2?

Mine hasn't arrived (sent tues) but i think it might be one of those games where you get out what you put in, i don't think it will have the instant gratification of cod's. Cod4 & 5 where great but ulimately shallow games, i'm hoping for a more deeper rewarding game from kz2.

Re: What do you think of Killzone 2?

I think with cod and killzone is abit like say forza and burnout

Can't people accept that fps can be different styles.

Vegas is totally different to call of duty 4, but you accept it for what it is, you don't say I wish it played like call of duty 4.

Call of duty isn't the way an fps should be, it depends what you like, if you like fast twitch shooters you'd get ut3, if you want a slow paced shooter you'd get vegas, if you want inbetween you'd get call of duty.

You wouldn't compare a sim racer to an arcade one and I do genuinely believe that killzone and call of duty are dfferent types of shooter.

It's like getting a burger from Maccy D's and saying I wish it was a sirloin steak.

If you don't like a game then fair enough, I do think that these forums are going to go into overdrive and there are going to be some arguments in the killzone sections.

It's going to be hard to differentiate between honest opinions and those flamebaiting, but I reckon it'll be unfair to those trying to give honest opinions but get labelled as flamebaiters.

I don't have the game, which is why I'm posting here now.

Believe me.. I agree.. But I have to admit to being really REALLY gutted.. I mean REALLY. And I believe that many MANY other people also will..

I am just finding the MP a chore and whilst its fair that this might not be my cup of tea, I still think that its flawed (although I don't know how/why).... Even Warhawk (which is a different game to COD) makes me feel engaged.. Like I am playing with 'real people'.. But I just don't feel it with KZ!!

People really need to stop personally hyping new games otherwise your always going to be disappointed .

Killzone 2 is not perfect but it's certainly a massive achievement. I'm glad that it's not as 'pick up and play' as COD as i will get Pwned online but this game gives me a chance to do good .

I'm telling everyone now, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 is NEVER EVER going to meet the hype.

Don't get me wrong, i don't mean that because they are different that it means killzone is awesome.

Afterall just because I prefer arcade racers doesn't mean that every arcade game will be great as there are crap ones.

But I do get confused by those buying killzone and complaining about certain traits, e.g it's like me buying oblivion, and saying I don't like the way it's open world

Surely some people knew by the demo that it wasn't as fast as call of duty 4 and played differently. (not directed at you )

It's like if I play a demo of disney pixar cars, and then buy the full game and say it doesn't handle like gt5.

You'd know better than me with regards to killzone as I haven't even played the full game.

One thing I will say though is as with any online game you play, who you play with makes a massive difference.

Stick me in a room with idiots in call of duty and I won't find it fun.

Bang me in with some nice banter and I'll love it.

I am sorry, but I don't agree. For me, this has nothing to do with Hype.. This isn't about how good I expected it to be (Even though my poll suggests otherwise)..

The game is a technical masterpiece.. There is no doubt about that.. But for me, the MP gameplay is flawed.. I can't put my finger on it.. I have played many other MP games (not all FP) and they all draw you in and give you the sensation that you are playing against real people.

With other games I feel anger when being killed.. Satisfaction when killing (especially when its revenge) and real anxt when in the heat of battle....

But with KZ, I feel nothing.. I can't explain it.. But what I can say for sure is that I would feel the same about this, irrespective of the hype!

Re: What do you think of Killzone 2?

One thing i hate about COD is the host ending the game early, just spent 30 minutes trying to get online with Killzone with no joy, found myself whinging about there being dedicated servers lol. proper frustrating, hope this doesnt last long as online has good potential, from the 5 mins i eventually got before it kicked me out.

Re: What do you think of Killzone 2?

I'm not a HUGE fan of the multiplayer maps as i think some are a bit dodgy. I die pretty easily but get a real kick when i finally kill someone

Is it not the slower moving pace compared to COD which is putting you off?

With other games I feel anger when being killed.. Satisfaction when killing (especially when its revenge) and real anxt when in the heat of battle....

But with KZ, I feel nothing.. I can't explain it.. But what I can say for sure is that I would feel the same about this, irrespective of the hype!

My copy arrived today(not played it yet), but after playing the demo a few weeks previously my desire for this game died a bit. I have a bad feeling that you are gonna be right Jon.

I am a COD fan and for good reason. It is the most polished MP FPS available. The only thing coming close is Battlefield. I too get the feeling that KZ will not engage me anywhere near, despite it's wonderful looks/sounds.

Someone mentioned earlier that COD hasn't evolved since the PC days. I would turn that round and say that it's a sad endightment on recent games (Resistance 2 and maybe KZ2) that with all the money and development time they have had, they still cannot match the feel and gameplay of COD.

Anyway..enough of that. I will now look forward to putting KZ through its paces tonight, although my expectations are low.

Re: What do you think of Killzone 2?

Single players is very good one of the best single players i have played (yes i have finished it)

Online is great fun controls are fine its very challanging and i love the classes i have been using so far.

This game is not for rambo's you need a squad with good badges and great team work to win.

6v6 cod4

or

16v16 kz2

Not everyone wants a COD Clone

This game is far from perfect but i will defend it when people say 'it's not COD4'

What are all of you doing talking about this game?

You must be at work?

You couldn't possibly be at home with a copy of killzone 2 and choosing to post on avforums instead

Re: What do you think of Killzone 2?

Well i'm in the COD 'wasn't actually that good' club so i'm hoping that KZ2 will ignite my interest in shooters again.

The last FPS that i enjoyed and played regularly online was BF:BC.

Looking forward to playing KZ2 later on tonight after i've caught up on some of my sky+ backlog.

Re: What do you think of Killzone 2?

Whats that old saying?

Familiarity breeds contempt???

I think a few people (not all) are just too familiar with some games that have been out a while.

And whilst the analogies have been hammered its like driving a Merc formula one car and then switching to Ferrari.

They are both great cars and at the top of their respective sport but BEWARE:- They handle differently!

I'm gonna give the game time to see how I get on.
