Sony where is your marketing !!!!

I have to say 'Sony what are you doing?'

Probably the biggest title of the PS3 so is coming out and not 1 advert on TV,Radio or in the papers so far.

It will sell to people in the know but it will not shift any consoles if no one knows about it

What do you think?

Mark..

Re: Sony where is your marketing !!!!

Still two weeks away any ads will probably be after the watershed as well. There was a post a while ago saying that Sony had £2 million pounds set aside for advertising if i remeber correctly.

Re: Sony where is your marketing !!!!

Apparently they've got a £2m budget for adverts in the uk Sony Ad Offensive | Edge Online, adverts for Motorstorm:PR were mentioned elsewhere too, and I saw a TV advert yesterday for it, so I would think we'll start to see Killzone 2 Adverts very, very soon

Re: Sony where is your marketing !!!!

i was thinking about the same thing, where is the marketing. sony seem very confident that this game will be such a success. so much they don't really need to showcase it. £2 million is really not that much for marketing a high profile game.

They're also working on a small KZ related minigame for PC. Sounds quite good.

I'm pretty sure they'll blow most of the budget just before release and the week after. One big blitz to drive sales then let word of mouth collect even more sales. With all the time, effort and money invested, they'll not cock the launch up.

Re: Sony where is your marketing !!!!

Sony's marketing has been a major weakness this gen.

Advertise Killzone 2. Advertise Little Big Planet. Advertise Uncharted 2. These are big games. Let people know about them. And try and get the PS3 name on more multiplats. Watching adverts nowadays, people would be forgiven for thinking Tomb Raider, Guitar Hero and other multi plats were 360 exclusives.

Hell, they should subtly point out how the system is solidly made, and not an unreliable time bomb waiting to break down as soon as you buy it.

Nor is it a botoxed PS2 with a gimmick controller.

Not sure how long it's been on, but only recently I've seen a LBP advert made by an Australian that features a BBQ and exploding dog.

And the God-awful Resistance 2 ads. It's one thing to say you're spending £2m on advertising, quote another if the ads are rubbish.

You remembered it though?

There is also a Motorstorm Pacific Rim advert too. I think they are a whole lot better than the launch ads, "This is Living" superimposed over a hand grenade next to a fish or whatever........... they were truly awful.

They are not going to push K2 until a week before release.

Re: Sony where is your marketing !!!!

What has really bugs me is how they have managed to get the game reviewd four weeks before release.

The game will come out four weeks after its peek of intrest - you would have to spend big, BIG bucks to generate the buzz the game has got now, by release date a lot of that will dry out.

Little Big Planet is another casualty of this - all set for release, buzz around the game is huge, then they delay one month (a patch would have sufficed) - it was never going to get the same attention.

Aye, I saw a Resistance 2 advert the other day, (the first R2 ad I recall seeing actually) shame its a few months too late and stranger still considering I would have thought they'd be going to town marketing the hell out of KZ2 or possibly a title like SF4 that is due next week.

The same goes for LBP when that was released. I recall seeing the ads post release and for me at least they were very poor and certainly wouldn't have swayed me to make a purchase if I was sat on the fence.

It really bugs me that publishers release "March" dated magazines in January!

Besides I think it was a bad choice of release date and how that coincides with the release date of magazines that forced them to have it reviewed four weeks in advance, otherwise it would not be reviewed until too close to release day. Plus I have a feeling that games publishers love pre-orders and reviewing early for a good game is the best way to generate pre-orders IMO.

Re: Sony where is your marketing !!!!

SONY didn't advertise over christmas, probably because they didn't think it would make much difference to sales. They've just started rolling out the Resistance 2, Motorstorm 2 and Little Big Planet which they'll probably play this week and next week then in the final week swap them for a advertising blitz for Killzone 2

Re: Sony where is your marketing !!!!

I don't think i've ever seen a ps3 advert on telly. A few at the cinema and a few in magazines like vice fhm/maxim etc but they really need to drive it home to the biggest audience (tv!).

If I were in charge i'd make a telly campaign taking the mickey out of nintendo's 'lifestyle ones'. Have a family of helghast sat on a sofa playing killzone2 together. Then again there's no local multiplayer is there?

Re: Sony where is your marketing !!!!

I agree. I only bought a PS3 recently (before Xmas) and I remember really wanting Fallout 3 because it was everywhere. Bus stops, ads, online ads, mags etc. It was out a week after the ads and the buzz was huge. I honestly thought Sony would be doing the same with Killzone 2 but reviews when the game's not out, still no announcement of a limited special edition except a tin can one and no new announcements make this a big thumbs down in the marketing stakes.

Awaiting my pre-order and looking forward to it, but hope Sony gets their act together and ups the PS3-PR.

Re: Sony where is your marketing !!!!

I think it's still a bit too early for TV ads, you only have a limited budget and you don't want to waste ads convincing people to buy a game that isn't actually out for another 2 weeks or they might forget about it.

I think the video from the end of the demo would be perfect for an advert. Imagine seeing that in the pub at halftime in the Inter v ManYoo and Real Madrid v Liverpool matches of release week

I saw the MS:PR one on sunday during the advert break for Moonraker! Saw the scrolling playstation logo and thought 'cool, here comes killzone ad' but nope. Was a good ad though, started with a david attenbrough type documentary looking at a butterfly on a flowers then a roar of engines and you see the same butterfly & flower stuck to the tread of a huge monster truck tyre.

They even showed some gameplay footage! Unlike Sony.

I dunno, I would rather SONY spend 10 million on making dam good games, than spending it on Advertising and Marketing. TBH, do they really need to advertise a new playstation, most people call their console a playstation.

I guess it'll start in earnest a bit closer to release. I thought the LBP marketing was excellent, getting (at least what appeared to be) real people to show us their levels, and it was actually in-game shots rather than pre-rendered nonsense. It'll come I'm sure!

I noticed that, i also noticed they put this part ''gameplay footage'' right at the beginning which i thought was very poor form : i thought it looked great until they did show the game footage...

I just think they should follow the movie industry for once.

Quick Teaser trailers should be happening now.

Plug the web site if there is one?

Full adverts a few weeks before release.

Xbox Live would have sent a few emails direct by now reminding people.

Mark..

Maybe they have done a Micro$oft and spent the £2M on bribing the mags

They must have ran out of money when they got to the Edge mag.

Movies don't really have an equivalent to pre-order sales though. I'm guessing Sony already know that they're onto a winner just by the amount of interest there is from the shops, forums, etc. and therefore don't really need to do much before launch.

No doubt some marketing will kick in after a few weeks if the sales figures appear to be leveling out or falling below expectation (same thing they did with LBP). IMO with something like KZ2, pre-launch "traditional" marketing is either preaching to the converted or it'll be lost on the masses.

Re: Sony where is your marketing !!!!

As of last week, the preorder count for Killzone 2 was 1.1m. This fell out of an interview with David Reeves (SCEE president), and it wasn't clarified whether that was worldwide or PAL territories.

So I don't think they really need any drastic advertising 2 weeks in advance

Re: Sony where is your marketing !!!!

Unfortunately for Sony its the 'masses' Sony need long term. As you say the converted are already sorted.

Pre-orders of 1.2 million is not great if you taken into account the PS3 stated install base.

Selling hardware keeps the software coming just ask Sega !!!
