If I recall correctly the demo in the US is only playable if you have a code. But the demo in the EU is open to all, no code required.

Gamestop must have paid a pretty penny for that exclusive.

Think you have to wait until the 26th for a demo unless you have a pre-order code from the US, most will have the game around that date.

If somebody has a US code they could set up a dummy US account to download and share with 5 other people.

Nah it's good for the people that are on the fence about the game.

And good for me too. I can try it out without having to break the seal on the game, if I don't like it I can cancel my preorder/return the game for a full refund.

Re: Killzone 2 - Preview Thread

Review from the Guardian. I know it's not really seen as a 'mainstream' game reviewer, but still worth a read.

Killzone 2 - the best PS3 game yet?

Still LittleBigPlanet for me, but Sony's new shooter is mightily impressive

Reflexes at the ready?

Awful name, very good game. Yes, I've been playing a lot of Killzone 2 over the last month. The PS3 first person shooter is out on the 27th Feb and is definitely worth the wait. Heck, it almost banishes memories of the pre-rendered/in-game footage fiasco of E3 2005. Almost.

Initially, however, the game feels underwhelming. The art design and settings are tediously reminiscent of Halo and Gears of War – think monosyllabic muscle-bound marines firing rockets around grey alien landscapes. Ok, you won't yawn but you may think "is this it?". Luckily things get a whole let better, primarily because the action itself is so intensely exciting.

It takes a few minutes to realise that running and gunning will get you nowhere – Killzone 2 is surprisingly tactical. Ok not, say, Rainbow 6 levels of strategy but Killzone 2 certainly involves more use of your brain than you may have expected. The enemy AI is worrying clever, up there with the best. Forget basic cover and shoot - enemy Helghast will use smoke grenades, flank you and generally give you no time to give peace a chance.
A quick glance at screens or trailer does the game a disservice – Killzone 2 is a gorgeous looking game. You won't have the time or inclination to gawp at the scenery Oblivion-style – although there are some very special set-pieces – but it's the attention to detail that really impresses. For example the lighting and particle effects give the landscapes a lived-in, realistic feel.

Despite a sad lack of co-op play – don't they know co-op is the future of gaming?! - multiplayer is clearly the long-term option. On paper it sounds great – different classes, role-playing-game levels of customisation - but it will take until full release to get a real feel on how successful it will be. Chances are, given the PS3's relative paucity of top-notch shooters, the answer will be "very".

In many ways Killzone 2 feels like a shooter designed by Blizzard. No, sadly you can't shoot Night Elves with a rocket launcher. Rather it takes all the conventions of the first-person shooter genre – weaponry, locale, cover/control mechanics – and polishes them until near perfection. Ok, maybe not perfection, but you get the point. Killzone 2 is a very pretty, very polished first person shooter.

Killzone 2 won't win awards for originality or narrative. And chances are in 15 years time when you dig your dusty PS3 out of the loft and start reminiscing it will be the likes of LittleBigPlanet that stir the greater memories. But in 2009 Killzone 2 is a state of the art first person shooter and a great way for the PS3 to start the year.

I'm not really that bothered about the single player part (only for the GFX) I'm more interested in the multi, after all thats where I'll be spending months playing (if it's to my liking)

I was thinking that, but I'm wondering whether that would stretch games out too much. i.e. everyone would be hidden behind stuff and no-one would want to advance into open areas? Shame though

That'll depend on game mode. If its something like Seach & Destroy you can't really win if you hide when you're supposed to go blow something up.

Its a shame though. Vegas 1 & 2 has a great cover system, makes the games very enjoyable.

I'm sure there are plenty of undecided gamers. Just like any other game there'll be the lovers aswell as the haters.

I wouldn't base the whole thing on a demo though mate, from my experience most demos are nowhere near as good as the full game. Uncharted, Dead Space, Haze... Ok not Haze.

Take heed of this:

Quote:
Initially, however, the game feels underwhelming. The art design and settings are tediously reminiscent of Halo and Gears of War – think monosyllabic muscle-bound marines firing rockets around grey alien landscapes. Ok, you won't yawn but you may think "is this it?". Luckily things get a whole let better, primarily because the action itself is so intensely exciting.
If the demo only goes upto the 'undewhelming' section he's talking about, you might miss out on the 'intensely exciting' parts.

Not to mention the multiplayer of course, which is where this game will be at, cover system or no cover system.

Re: Killzone 2 - Preview Thread

True, but any sort of demo will give you more feel for the game than no demo. So at least you have a flavour of what to expect at a minimum.

For example, the camera in Resident Evil 5 demo bugs me, if I can't get used to it thats a game I'm not going to buy. Simple thing like that in a demo can help people make choices.

Re: Killzone 2 - Preview Thread

Agreed, I didn't feel blown away by Mirrors Edge so decided not to buy. However, the amount of praise KZ2 has received from everyone surely means it's going to be worth giving a chance to.

I can imagine it'll be a game that would sell on easy too. I've recently sold COD:WAW for £30, only lost £6 from new. KZ2 will be the same I reckon, you'll easy sell it for £30 so I reckon play the game outright, then if you don't like either the single player or multiplayer, sell it on then.

I don't consider myself a coward. I've just got very poor shooting skills, slow reactions, zero grenade throwing accuracy and a complete inability to learn maps!

I like to play to my strengths so hiding behind a barrel while slowly considering my options seems like a great idea. if I had my way all on-line multiplayer shooters would be turn based

p.s. I'm not even going to post the link it's that bad but the ridiculous article of the day award (and follow up discussion) definitely goes to N4G for an article about how there wasn't a commercial for killzone at the superbowl and the possible major ramifications for sony???

Re: Killzone 2 - Preview Thread

In the multiplayer game, will all classes have access to the same standard weapons, apart from the specialist weapons, snipers etc? So would my Medic have access to the same semi-auto as say an Engineer or do they all have their own weapon sets?

Re: Killzone 2 - Preview Thread

I couldn't resist and had to read further...
Quote:
I completed Killzone 2 yesterday. Roughly 10 hours of gripping first person shooter gameplay that I won't forget in a hurry. I'm currently writing up the Killzone 2 review, which will appear on the site later this week, but I'm already excited that there will almost certainly be a Killzone 3.

If you don't want to read about the ending of Killzone 2, then move along, otherwise read on. (I've added spoiler tags just in case)

*After a tough final boss battle against Colonel Radec of the Helghast Army, you meet up with Emperor Scolar Visari in his Helghan palace, who you've been searching for throughout the game, You're supposed to arrest him and bring him to justice, but his army has killed many of your men along the way and you're not the forgiving type. He warns you that if you are to kill him, his armies will rise and will fight to the death in his name.

Foolishly, you ignore his threats as you think you've killed off most of the Helghast in the game, and the rest will back down with no commander behind them. You kill him and think that the game ends there, but when you walk outside of the palace you're greeted with the sight of dozens of Helghast drop-ships filling the sky. "The Madness Begins," are Visari's final words.
*
Sounds good to me.
