Re: Killzone 2 - Preview Thread

Think people are just looking for more info now though, rather than a review score.

Top games tend not to have a large variance through all reviews. Early reviews suggest it's gonna be very good, so it's really just a case of taking in some info and beautiful screens.

Edge will probably score it lower than Mario & Sonic at the Olympics but that's their strange new prerogative.

It wont just be Eurogamer, i imagine that all the major gaming sites wll have their reviews up, tho i am looking forward to eurogamer's review as they tend to not give in to the hype surrounding a game and tell it like it is, apart from Halo 3 which got a 10/10, and i thought was a bit pants.

Re: Killzone 2 - Preview Thread

PSW magazines review score (just bought in Tesco) if you want to know...

*8/10 - Killer visuals cannot hide its lack of originality and short campaign.*

They gave WAW 10/10 and said it's the best FPS on PS3 so not sure what to make of that!

It also says 'will the online keep you off WAW? No, you'll be back on that before you can reload your meaty sounding weapon. Not me, I sold my copy of WAW!

Not sure, think it was 9/10.

Read the rest of the review now. Seems the main points are:

Pros -
-Amazing visuals
-great weapons
-immersive gameplay

cons -
-campaign too short (he claims finished in 5 hours by not going for extras i.e. shooting logos etc)
-Levels too samey, allways shooting same baddies
-controls in SP cannot be altered to suit cod as the cover system doesnt work otherwise?

but then again do we really want it to be like COD.
it's not made by COD dev. So why should we expect the controls to be the same.

I think what he means is the zoom isn't as good. On multiplayer you can change it to L1 so it's like COD and therefore feels natural to a lot of people, but in the singleplayer that button must be dedicated to something else.

Sounds like nitpicking to me, as you should be able to adjust if needs be I say.

Incidentally, they also gave FEAR2 the same score so if anyones played that demo you can see what they are judging their score level at.

I don't mind different controls.

I used to have a nightmare changing freom Rainbow 6 to COD4 but it wouldn't take me to long to pick it back up again.

Re: Killzone 2 - Preview Thread

He didn't mention it so I'd say your guess is probably pretty spot on.

I finished Uncharted in under 5 hours on my 2nd play on Hard (knew where to go), yet I'd still say it's one of my fave games this gen.

COD4, finished it on normal in under 6 hours, 1st & only play.

Also I sold WAW because I just didn't get into the single player side of it, and the online is too glitchy.

Horses for courses etc but hopefully in 29 days I can be shown that this reviewer is a fool by playing the game myself and casting my own judgement.

The zoom isn't that relevant here though is it?

Not in the beta and a lot less knowledgable than most in here but i was under the impression it was encouraged to fire without having to use the zoom in most combat in K2.

If you were in the Beta you're more knowledgeable than me!

I'm sure some reviewers just don't like change to be honest. I like COD but it really bores me when everyone says this isn't like COD4 or this bit was better in WAW.

Another question for beta players;

Is it easier to spot the helghast compared to the isa troops because of the red googles of the helghast?

Is there anything negative about this game? Anything you didn't like?

The issue is, and I think most people will agree on this - is that from a mainstream view this game's never going to be 'better' (it seems people are unable to distinguish quality from success) than COD4.

The success of COD4 relies on it's fast, fluid and twitchy mechanics. The singleplayer doesn't even come into the equation. COD4 might as well be an online-only game as that's where the sucess lies. I always compare it with Counter Strike as the online game that everyone play or knows someone who plays, it's massive through word of mouth and the familiarity of it's setting and mechanics.

KZ2 is a completely different setting (the majority of people buying this have never played the original), and the online mechanics are class based. Sounds a lot like an online game we already have on the ps3 called Warhawk. How many of you are still playing that?

Re: Killzone 2 - Preview Thread

As gamer first and foremost (multi console owner) my main concern is if they game will be any good. So far everything is looking fine and dandy and it looks like a serious contender for GOTY.

But from Sony's point of view, will they just be happy with the game getting fab reviews (hitting aggregate scores of 96-97%)? Or is the main concern hitting 3m+ sales worldwide?

What are they looking for? What is a realistic target (sales wise)? Can it sell more than Metal Gear 4?

I believe that sold 3-4m worldwide.

All the best.

you can see the red goggles pretty easily imo. actually i think there is a disadvantage of being the helghast on MP.

i was going to mention the zoom thing. on the beta i changed iit to the COD layout because im so used to it. so im not too happy that i wont be able to change it in SP. will just have to get used to it.

Plus unlike cod where when you zoom you just hold the L1 button and to exit it you just release. on K2 i had to press the button to enter zoom and then press it again to exit it. i prefer the cod method.

these are just minor personal niggles. it is a truly amazing game and im sure everyone will love it. CANNOT wait to try the SP mode.

Where in Warhawk do you get classes?

Sounds more like Team Fortress 2, the original. I am looking forward to the multiplayer, from the clips I have seen it looks pretty good. I like this idea of changing game modes, pretty interesting.

Not sure whether it will drag me too far from playing L4D, but still looking forward to it!

It'll be interesting to see if the Helghast have an advantage over the isa in multiplayer due to their glowing eyes. Maybe the isa's weapons will be less effective?

I have heard that the eyes are being toned down from when the beta was released due to it being a disadvantage

Added to this, most reviews tend to be comparisons with their favourite game of the genre, instead of actual reviews of the game at hand.

The number of times I've read a review that goes something like this:

Quote:
Game X is a first-person shooter. So is CoD4. CoD4 is awesome.
...snip lots of CoD4 praise...
I would like to have CoD4s babies. So in conclusion, Game X is 6/10 because it's not CoD4.
I must have read about 20 reviews of CoD4 in OPM, the only difference is they each have a different game name at the top. They all seem to bang on about CoD4 in the middle though

"Reviewers", please note. We know you like CoD4. Quite a lot of us actually don't. When a shooter is different to CoD4, that does not mean it is worse. To many of us, different to CoD4 makes it better than CoD4.

But most importantly, what does CoD4 have to do with anything? If you are good at your job, you should be able to review a game with no reference to any other game previously in existence (and also no scoring system of any kind), and the quality of your review should tell us all we need to know.

For example with Killzone 2. If it turns out to be balls and you say so, in a review which succinctly points out exactly why it is balls, then fair enough. If your reason is basically "it's different to CoD4" then could you politely GTFO of the journalism business, and try not to let the door hit you on the ass on the way out. Kthx.

You've bought PSW this month too then Cat?

There is a box-out section and it simply reads 'the bit on the mounted gun lacks the thrills of the bit on CAD:WAW with a mounted gun'
