I got KZ2 the week it came out, played it a bit then when back to the online Resistance 2...Last night I returned to KZ2, and I must say I am really impressed -

So - to a online KZ2 newbie - what is the common wisdom on which is the best online mode to play on?

It depends on what you like to play, there are different maps and different missions. I personally prefer Search and Destroy in Tharsis, Assasination in Phyyrus rise and Search and Retrieve in Radec Academy. Choice of weapon, role that you assume(if you have unlocked all) will also depend on the mission and map that you play.
