Best isp for me

Hi, i currently have my broadband supplied by the utility warehouse, my netgear says, ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3840 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 46 db 13.5 db
Noise Margin 11 db 25 db

I have done a thinkbroadband speedtest and get

Speed Test Results
Date 09/01/09 20:49:06
Speed Down 569.71 Kbps ( 0.6 Mbps )
Speed Up 377.65 Kbps ( 0.4 Mbps )

I dont always get that speed, i checked it this morning at 6 o'clock and got 2.8mbps download and similar upload

Do you think i would get a better speed if i changed to sky? My exchange is Langwathby. Any help advice would be great.

Thanks Matthew

Have you had a look at adsl24.co.uk ?

ADSL24 Broadband - ADSL availability checker

They were all the rage +6 months ago, I've not heard much on the forum about them since (worth having a search)

Re: Best isp for me

First of all 469.71 kb/s is a dreadful throughput number for a service running with a Line Rate of 3840 kb/s, which suggests that you have a problem.

First of all try this to see if you have a remarketed BT service Test Result. Post the results back here.

Next, in order to findout if a Sky service will be faster try this: Samknows Broadband - Exchange Search . If Sky is not listed as an 'LLU Operator' for your exchange the answer is no.

Re: Best isp for me

The results

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
Your DSL connection rate: 4416 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 3000 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 2757 kbps

But at peak times it goes way down, would i benefit from changing to sky? Does there kbps drop at peak times? I live way out in the country, so number of people using the same service shouldnt be an issue?

Re: Best isp for me

Those numbers are the result of test to your Local Exchange and look about right. Your IP Profile looks a little low but if you can lift your Line Rate a little, for example by sorting out your Internal telephone wiring, you should be able to get your IP Profile to rise 3,500 Kb/s.

However your low speed during peak times could be caused by: a congested Exchange, or Contention (sharing with lots of other users), or your ISP not having an adequate connection to their network (by not paying BT enough for the connection) or your ISP just has a slow network.

If you take a Sky LLU connection, you WILL go faster. (Fix your internal wiring and you may go faster still.)
