How far are you from your exchange?

Your internet speed depends on your distance from the exchange and the quality of the lines. As if you need me to tell you that, but

For the first time, I found out how far form my exchange I am.

Approximately 671 meters from the exchange (straight line distance)

How far from your exchange are you?

http://www.samknows.com/broadband/checker2.php

Enter phone number or post code, and click the BT ADSL box under Summary

Re: How far are you from your exchange?

According to BT Wholesale, your line should be able to support a 0.5Mbps or greater ADSL connection.

And 0.5 Mbps is exactly what I get

September 2009 before things get any better apparently

Re: How far are you from your exchange?

whooo! beat this boys !!!!

BT ADSL broadband availability
You are connected to the Musselburgh telephone exchange.

ADSL is available in your area
Your exchange is also enabled for ADSL Max services

According to BT Wholesale, your line should be able to support a 4Mbps or greater ADSL connection via ADSL Max.

Standard ADSL RAG results:
[BT ADSL Code: GEGEGEC] You can receive 2Mbps ADSL
[BT ADSL Code: GEGEGEC] You can receive 1Mbps ADSL
[BT ADSL Code: GEGEGEC] You can receive 512Kbps ADSL
[BT ADSL Code: GEGEGEC] You can receive 256Kbps ADSL

You are approximately 80 metres from the exchange (straight line distance).

However, there is another service on your phone line (e.g. ADSL, LLU, DACS, etc) that would prevent you from ordering a new ADSL connection.

Your BT ADSL code is: GEGEGEC

944 metres

"your line should be able to support a 8Mbps or greater ADSL connection via ADSL Max"

There's no LLU available yet unfortunately.

Re: How far are you from your exchange?

I know for a fact that many of the exchanges have their own ADSL connections for the engineers to use. I bet they're pretty quick.

Re: How far are you from your exchange?

I get this from the site

Congratulations, you are in a broadband enabled area.
However, there is another service on your phone line (e.g. ADSL, LLU, DACS, etc) that would prevent you from ordering a new ADSL connection.

The following services are available in your location:

BT Wholesale ADSL
BT Wholesale ADSL Max
TalkTalk (CPW) LLU
Sky Broadband / Easynet LLU
Tiscali LLU
21CN PSTN migration due Apr-Jun 2009

ADSL is available in your area
Your exchange is also enabled for ADSL Max services

According to BT Wholesale, your line should be able to support a 7Mbps or greater ADSL connection via ADSL Max.

Standard ADSL RAG results:
You can receive 2Mbps ADSL
You can receive 1Mbps ADSL
You can receive 512Kbps ADSL
You can receive 256Kbps ADSL

You are approximately 161 metres from the exchange (straight line distance).

However, there is another service on your phone line (e.g. ADSL, LLU, DACS, etc) that would prevent you from ordering a new ADSL connection.

Re: How far are you from your exchange?

Straight line distance means nothing your line can still be more then 3 times that length also I don't trust samknows for exchanges it seems to have some in the wrong locations.

Re: How far are you from your exchange?

I am 1.6m and get between 8 to 10Mb with BE which is a lot better than the 1Mb I got on a BT ADSL Max service.

Re: How far are you from your exchange?

I'm not sure how much further this information takes us

I'm about 1.5 miles from my exchange in a straight line

But I'm actually around 5 miles from the exchange as the wire travels

Initially I was told broadband would be problematic and might need an engineer to connect at 512

I eventually got connected at 1mb

After upgrade of some old bits of line I now get 3mb

Straight line distance means very little

Re: How far are you from your exchange?

865 meters. On Sky MAX and getting 8000 Kbps

Maybe BT are still stabilising my line. In my experience though after they stabilise it the line is slower.

Re: How far are you from your exchange?

i remember doing this check about 4 years ago, when the checker used to report that we were 620miles from the exchange, o how we laughed

Anyways, they now report we are 3.65km IIRC and are currently stuck at 512K connection, although i'm hoping that ADSL2+ will give us a better rate.

Looking at moving from PIPEX to Be or possibly Sky as we already have Sky+ multiroom.

Gary

Re: How far are you from your exchange?

4.11Km

I usually get around 1.2Mb download and 448K upload (which i'm actually more interested in).

Sometimes the line drops when it rains.

Stands for Red Amber Green, like traffic lights. There are various criteria to establish colours given.

More about it on Kitz's site: http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/RAGtest.htm
