Be / Bethere Broadband keeps disconnecting during PS3 gaming (especially GTAIV!) Help

Hoping someone can help - I recently got Bethere broadband (which uses 02 servers) - I had Tiscali before that.

Anyway the internet speeds are fast - much faster than Tiscali was, but when playing ps3 games online, I'm now having massive problems. The worst seems to be GTA4... I can only connect to games with about 1 player in them and the game keeps disconnecting - sometimes every few seconds. If I'm lucky I can (very rarely) join a game with up to 4-5 players, but it doesn't seem to last long and will disconnect randomly. When I say disconnect, I don't mean the internet disconnects or the PS3 signs out of PSN as it doesn't - I mean the online game session itself disconnects and it starts a new multiplayer game session. With Tiscali, I would always manage to join games with around 16 players and never had any disconnections? At the moment, it's unusable and I'm not quite sure how to fix it? Also, when in game, people are actually floating around the map??? I've noticed other players spontaneously exploding on screen for no reason??? It's really weird).

The Thomson BeBox Router (TG585 v7) has UPnP enabled. Any suggestions? I thought the constant disconnections might be dodgy microfilters so tried replacing those but it didn't help.

Never had any such problems with Tiscali? Is there a known problem with the 'BeBox' router or BeBroadband and online gaming? Hope not, as I've just signed up for 12 months...

Anyone else had similar problems? Any advice much appreciated(!)

try a different router see if that fixes the problem

The thomson box is your problem, it is pure utter garbage, grab yourself a decent brand like netgear, ditch that junk.

Hmmm - ok... I have a Netgear router lying around. I'll try using that.

I definitely don't think much of the Thomson router they've given, but am only using it as Be seems to be geared towards using their own equipment.

Hopefully the Netgear will do the trick...

Have just set everything up using my Netgear router - DG834G v3 (luckily it's ADSL2+)

The good news is that all the problems I was getting have now gone!!

Just tried a game of GTA4 to test it - connected with loads of players immediately and no disconnections.

The only drawback has been that the Thomson Be box was connecting with a downstream connection speed of around 9Mbps (which was impressive given that I'm only paying for 8Mbps!) and an upstream connection speed of 1.5Mbps. When I performed actual speed tests I would always get at least 8Mbps.

I've noticed with the Netgear plugged in, am getting a downstream connection speed of 7.5Mbps and an upstream connection speed of 1.1Mbps. The actual max speed I'm getting during speed tests are around 6.5Mbps.

Anyway - despite losing about 1.5Mbps in speed, I'm still happy as it's now usable.

Older netgear routers used a chipset that is not as fast at syncing with the equipment Be uses in there exchanges - I agee about the BeBox being crappy but it will give you a speed boost. My Netgear DG834v2 is a great router but cannot match the Bebox - e.g Bebox - gives me 18.5mb Netgear, 16.9mb
This is well documented at Be Forum. If you have a newer netgear some of them dont use the old chipset and better (think it was the V4 one).

Depends on how bad things are - I stuck with my Bebox in the end but it can be painful.

i got the new dlink i get 18.5meg sync and old speedtouch last year wireless one i got gives 19meg so it nt really a big difference as i still get same speed as before bit weird why it does that because the ones that be/o2 give are rubbish routers but new ones get sync took off abit and some get loads took off

Yeah its probably this... my netgear is a SKY one, DG834GT and it synchs really well...

Told ya a quality router would sort it...... don't throw away the O2 box though, keep it as a diagnostic tool...for when your internet drops... plus when talking to customer support they won't fob you off because you have non-branded O2 router

PS. there are loads of unlocked SKY Netgear DG834GT on ebay, I got mine for around £23!..... BARGAIN!

Don't worry - I certainly won't be chucking it... With BE you have to return it when you leave them or they charge you £100(!)

(have no idea how they work that figure out lol - it's not even worth £10 IMO)
