Optimizing your set with the THX disc will certainly go a little way to improving your image, but even the Panasonic and LG models which now have THX presets are a marked way off ISF standards. I have seen many Pannys and LG's at work lately and while they look good (v10 especially) they are unable to match the accuracy of proper calibration imo.
I'm still blown away every time I switch the lx5090 on
Considering I work for an electrical retailer and the majority of our sales are flatpanels its disappointing to see how unheard of calibration is
There just seems very little interest in the consumer market and while LG are now offering great user control over their sets and others are following suit I just wonder how many people who buy these sets are going to have them calibrated or even know what it is.
These sets are very affordable and should sell well in any high street chain.
To be honset I would say that THX preset models are the best for the general consumer, because they will get a fairly accurate image out of the box no messing, not many people...if any, who come into one of our branches will buy the LGps8000 and then pay for the expert mode to be used correctly.
I would imagine that less than 1% of the market are likely to have ISF calibration done to their tv and the type of person who is will have gone to a specialised retailer and will be spending a bit more money on their flat panel, thats just the way it is.
One of the biggest problems is that people don't have a base point for comparison, yes most folk who buy a tv will want it to look as good as poss but will have no idea what a accurate image should look like, thats certainly the case for the general consumer and unfortunately pretty much all the sales staff at high street outlets.
In THX mode the v10's do look quite impressive but I have noticed some tones look over saturated and quite unatural. Of course you have to watch a fair bit of content to really judge but since having our kuro at home calibrated by Piers I can honestly say I've never seen anything which looked wrong, no matter what I'm watching and in most cases I'm extreamly impressed, and believe me I've watched this set a lot since having it ISF'd!!
When testing a 60 in Lg plasma the other day (think it was ps7000) I noticed it had expert mode also like the flagship 8000 which was great (think we were selling for 2k) but the image looked very poor to me, I tried all the picture modes but it really lacked any depth and infact looked like the sort of image produced by a panel 2 or 3 years old, the black level was very weak and posititvely looked grey. I know calibration would improve things significantly but this panel just lacked the capabilty to utilise any controls provided.
Its strange the 2 main competitors to Pioneers crown both offer an alternative but each miss something vital. The v10 has a great panel which comes close to a kuro but has very little proper colour management control or gamma and the LG's have great control but lack a high quality panel to display the image
Possibly tv's of the future will all be near the standard or better of the Pio Krp's and be very accurate out of the box but I can't see it happening for many years.
I would certainly recommend calibration to anyone who has a flatpanel tv and values a good image but for folk who have spent a fair some of money on a Kuro (with exception of the krp models with Pure mode which by all accounts are very accurate out of the box) it really is worth doing because the panel is able to really display something very special indeed.
