Re: pioneer 507 calibrated today

Hi, Dazman, i am really impressed what a difference the callibration made it like watching another plasma. sd material is so sharp, i have sky hd, and panasonic bmp-bd 35 blu ray player, running through a denon 1909, which is running hdmi to the 507. i was doubtful about having the 507 isf'd because its 2 years old, have it done mate and be impressed

Re: pioneer 507 calibrated today

Thanks to Gordon who came and done my screen today i was quite surprised by how bad my settings were, i used to think the picture was great !
I was a bit underwhelmed at first as i did not notice the massive difference i had imagined it would make as i thought it just looked a bit duller than the original settings but im sitting here watching casino royale on my PS3 and it does look so much better, i just tried the standard setting and after using my isf setting i could never go back to standard now the colours are just too off.The images are cleaner and more defined now with more of a 3d type effect with the contrast and depth that i never noticed before.
Im gonna be busy watching all my blu rays today to see the improvements.

Im glad i got it done and would recommend it, it does seems like a lot of money but for me it was worth it for the peace of mind knowing i was getting the best i could from my tv, also i now no longer need to constantly tinker with the settings plus it was a bonus having Gordon explaining everything which was quite educational.

Chelsea tone, i think i must be following you on your upgrade path. I see you now have a 60" kuro and you used to have a 507, I was so tempted to sell my 507 and get a 60" but funds just would not stretch to that which is why i got the isf as a compromise.I have a DF monolith on order in gloss black now after following the monolith thread and im on my third week now so not long till it comes

Re: pioneer 507 calibrated today

Excellent Daz. I wasn't planning to upgrade as im more than happy with the 507, but Pioneers decision to pull out kinda left me with no option. I have had no probs at all with the 507, and its going to my gf's parents. I shall defo get the KRP done tho. If you dont mind, could you PM me with what you had done and the price pls ? No probs if you'd rather not.

Cheers

Re: pioneer 507 calibrated today

Hi guys, just a couple of quick questions regarding calibration. Bit of a noob on plasma forums but after calibration are the settings saved in user mode? Also do you get a hard copy of settings for personal records?

Just asking as my dad has just got himself a kuro (5090) and I was thinking of paying for calibration on it.

Craig.

Re: pioneer 507 calibrated today

Hi, once its calibrated you enter picture mode (sport, movie etc) and you should have Day (isf) and Night (isf) settings . Hard disc?? wouldn't think so, but sure someone will correct me

http://www.avforums.com/forums/members/4882.html is a recommended ISF Calibrator. And he doesnt charge travelling

Craig.

ISF calibration can be done with many of the picture modes. With the right software ISF calibrators can unlock ISF Day and Night modes on the Pioneer screens.

After calibration you will get ISF day and night pre-sets (like the movie, standard, user pre-sets that you currently have). The new ISF modes are locked, you can't change settings within them.

From me you get a report showing before / after results. I cannot comment on what others offer.

Thanks for the info Piers

This sounds like exactly the sort of service I would expect. We have applied bumtious's settings and they have proved a revelation for bluray but sky hd looks slightly too flat to me.

I am confident that calibration is worth the expense and seriously considering having the 5090 done.

I have always been a fan of lcds but seeing the kuro in action really is believing. I have been more than impressed with what I've seen so far and there really is no comparison when watching bluray.

I want one myself

Re: pioneer 507 calibrated today

I too have a Pioneer 507 and don't have the urge to upgrade but do have the urge to get the best from my screen.

I have used settings from this forum, but I believe my screen can offer more.

Is there a list of isf calibrators in the Midlands/Worcestershire area?

There is a list here:

http://www.imagingscience.com/isf_search.cfm

One on the list is relatively close to you and calibrated Craig's Pioneer (see page 1 of this thread) :-0

Piers that link doesn't work, and Craig (on first page) is thinking of having it done.

I have used the THX optimiser dvd to do a rudimentary setting check also but I can't think that this is good enough.

There will be a marked improvement in accuracy between an ISF calibration and using the THX Optimizer.

Optimizing your set with the THX disc will certainly go a little way to improving your image, but even the Panasonic and LG models which now have THX presets are a marked way off ISF standards. I have seen many Pannys and LG's at work lately and while they look good (v10 especially) they are unable to match the accuracy of proper calibration imo.

I'm still blown away every time I switch the lx5090 on

Considering I work for an electrical retailer and the majority of our sales are flatpanels its disappointing to see how unheard of calibration is

There just seems very little interest in the consumer market and while LG are now offering great user control over their sets and others are following suit I just wonder how many people who buy these sets are going to have them calibrated or even know what it is.

These sets are very affordable and should sell well in any high street chain.

To be honset I would say that THX preset models are the best for the general consumer, because they will get a fairly accurate image out of the box no messing, not many people...if any, who come into one of our branches will buy the LGps8000 and then pay for the expert mode to be used correctly.

I would imagine that less than 1% of the market are likely to have ISF calibration done to their tv and the type of person who is will have gone to a specialised retailer and will be spending a bit more money on their flat panel, thats just the way it is.

One of the biggest problems is that people don't have a base point for comparison, yes most folk who buy a tv will want it to look as good as poss but will have no idea what a accurate image should look like, thats certainly the case for the general consumer and unfortunately pretty much all the sales staff at high street outlets.

In THX mode the v10's do look quite impressive but I have noticed some tones look over saturated and quite unatural. Of course you have to watch a fair bit of content to really judge but since having our kuro at home calibrated by Piers I can honestly say I've never seen anything which looked wrong, no matter what I'm watching and in most cases I'm extreamly impressed, and believe me I've watched this set a lot since having it ISF'd!!

When testing a 60 in Lg plasma the other day (think it was ps7000) I noticed it had expert mode also like the flagship 8000 which was great (think we were selling for 2k) but the image looked very poor to me, I tried all the picture modes but it really lacked any depth and infact looked like the sort of image produced by a panel 2 or 3 years old, the black level was very weak and posititvely looked grey. I know calibration would improve things significantly but this panel just lacked the capabilty to utilise any controls provided.

Its strange the 2 main competitors to Pioneers crown both offer an alternative but each miss something vital. The v10 has a great panel which comes close to a kuro but has very little proper colour management control or gamma and the LG's have great control but lack a high quality panel to display the image

Possibly tv's of the future will all be near the standard or better of the Pio Krp's and be very accurate out of the box but I can't see it happening for many years.

I would certainly recommend calibration to anyone who has a flatpanel tv and values a good image but for folk who have spent a fair some of money on a Kuro (with exception of the krp models with Pure mode which by all accounts are very accurate out of the box) it really is worth doing because the panel is able to really display something very special indeed.

Craig

Can any of the calibrators on here comment on wether they have callied a panasonic ??

My panny is quite old, a PZ70, would ISF be possible on this set ? And if so, would I get as much benefit from it ?

I have calibrated 100's of Panasonics.....Yes they benefit from calibration. You get a more accurate image by doing so.

I'm just wondering if it sharpens the picture up a little as well.

And can you lock the settings like has been said the pios do ?

Vieras don't have dedicated ISF memories like the Pioneers, which are locked post-calibration.
Greyscale work would be done in the service menu and would be inaccessible afterwards.
Some user controls would be adjusted in the normal menus though and the settings noted for future reference.
