ISF on a LED Screen

Hi,

I've had my 55" Samsung D8000 for a while now and have just purchased an oppo 95.

I'm considering having the screen calibrated but a little concerned I'll like the results. I'm pleased with the picture image at present after tweaking the settings using some of the owners threads settings.

I quite like the sharp image and vivid colours although my brightness etc is turned right down.

Would it be worth getting the screen calibrated with my sky hd and oppo? I just don't want to spend several hundred pounds and then revert back to my original settings.

Thanks
Mark

it wont be several hundred pounds, a few and a bit more maybe. no, you wont ever revert to your original settings. it will save you hours of tweaking back and forth trying to decide what was best. as it will all be done for you.

Well around £250 is what I've seen online from a reputable company.

What I'm saying is I don't want to pay £250 to have it set up properly to not like the colour to then revert back to what I've got now.

It may be the 'correct' settings but may not be pleasing to my eye. Obviously it may transform my picture quality beyond what I could ever imagine and I may be over the moon with it. Just my sure what to expect. I've seen a few calibrated projectors and read quite a few testimonials online saying how please they are with there image after its been calibrated.

Thanks
Mark

well mark, in all honesty if thats your mindset, how will you ever know?, if you dont get your kit calibrated. its not a risk at all, as it can only improve things, your eye will bend to the new settings and will perceive them as much more accurate even if the initial change from your own incorrect settings jars you at first, which can happen as one has become accustomed to over saturated, over sharpened colours etc

you have spent big money on the oppo 95, how did you know that would be an improvement over a standard sacd/cd/blu deck?

You are telling me that you do NOT want a calibrated image. Calibration is not about making anything pleasing to your eye, it is about making your display confirm to industry standards so you can view content as the Director wants you to see it.

Sry for hijacking the thread but...

Got a question for you Gregg...

I too don't know whether to go with a professional calibration or not.

The reason is that I have one input to the TV which is coming from the AVR. And then to the AVR via HDMI I have the following sources connected: Dreambox 800HD (most channels 1080i), HTPC (using nVidia GTX460 SC & TMT5 to play blu-rays), and PS3.

Now I know that PS3 source I can forget about it since there is no standard in gaming colors... but the two other sources are different... from an HTPC to a Dreambox... If I calibrate on HTPC using TMT5 colors on Dreambox source might be different but essentially it would be the same settings (since one input in TV). Not to mention the fact that should I update TMT5 and/or graphics card drivers, somethings might be different so I would have to do another calibration!

Can you tell me what your view about this is please?

Because I can watch an Oppo and try one before hand where as I've not got a chance to see my television calibrated without paying for it and having it done!

I do want a calibrated image and maybe I will like the picture once its calibrated its just I don't want to have it done for me not to like the image once its been calibrated.

As I say I will no doubt have it done, just to get it done and will hopefully like the image its just one of those things I can't try before I unless someone near by has a calibrated Samsung D8000??

Where are you based?

It wouldn't necessarily have to be another D8000 to give you an idea of how a calibrated image looks...

DY4

West Midlands.

Not necessarily but would be nice if it was an LED to get a decent idea.

Thanks

Why not try the DIY route ?

Even a basic colourimeter and free software will provide a good idea of the impact of calibration. There's an investment in time and gaining knowledge but this can also help improve understanding of image attributes. Plus the ability to calibrate new products added to the display chain or achieve different calibration goals.

If you don't like the result or the DIY experience you can always sell the colourimeter.
